A gas chromatographic method to determine caprolactam in multilayer PA-6 films used for meat foodstuffs and cheese was developed and validated. A wide linear range (0.8-400 mu g/ml), RSD <= 4.1% and recovery higher than 90.0% were obtained for the chromatographic system, while precision and accuracy of the method showed RSD <= 3.8%, recovery from 95.5-100.0% and LOQ of 32 mu g/g. Irradiated (3, 7 and 12 kGy) and non-irradiated commercial films were analyzed. Most of them increased caprolactam levels with the increase of irradiation doses. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Irradiation has been increasingly recognized as an effective decontamination technique, also ensuring the chemical and organoleptic quality of medicinal and aromatic plants 1 . The use of medicinal plants in the prevention and or treatment of several diseases has revealed satisfactory results as anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, anti-cancer and antioxidant agents 2 . The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of gamma irradiation on the cytotoxic properties and phenolic composition of Thymus vulgaris L. and Menta x piperita L. (methanolic extracts). Phenolic compounds were analyzed by HPLC-DAD-ESI MS, while the cytotoxicity of the samples was assessed in MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer), HeLa (cervical carcinoma), HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) cell lines, as also in non-tumor cells (PLP2). Thirteen and fourteen phenolic compounds were detected in T. vulgaris and M. piperita, respectively, but none of them was affected by the irradiation up to a dose of 10 kGy. However, despite there were no changes in the cytotoxic properties of irradiated peppermint samples in tumor cell lines, the thyme samples irradiated with 10 kGy showed higher cytotoxicity in comparison with the samples submitted to other doses (2 and 5 kGy). This highlights that 10 kGy can be a suitable dose to ensure the sanitary treatment, without modifying the bioactive composition and properties of these aromatic plants.

Gamma irradiation has been widely used as a breeding technique to obtain new cultivars in ornamental species such as Alstroemeria, where several cultivars have been obtained through rhizome radiation. The optimum dosage for an appropriate induction of mutation must be considered for breeding purposes and it depends mainly on plant susceptibility. Thus in this study in vitro cultured rhizomes of Alstroemeria aurea were irradiated with a gamma source using different dosages to evaluate the direct effect produced. Damage and number of rhizome sprouting were observed and recorded during 61 days after irradiation. At the end of this period, rhizomes were weighted and mortality was evaluated. Both mortality and weight increased depending on dosage. All irradiated rhizomes showed early sprouting in comparison with control (0 Gy) and no significant difference in final number of shoots after 61 days among irradiated treatments was observed. Bleaching and necrosis was observed in all irradiated rhizomes and was more evident at higher doses. LD50 was established at about 40 Gy and the optimum dosage to induce mutation was suggested between 2.5 and 5 Gy, when the growth was reduced in 50%, and probably this dosage could be used for breeding purposes.

The effects of gamma irradiation on as-grown 5 at% Yb:YAlO3 (YAP) and air annealing on gamma-irradiated 5 at% Yb: YAP have been studied by the difference in the absorption spectra before and after treatment. The gamma irradiation and air annealing led to opposite changes of the absorption properties of the Yb: YAP crystal. After air annealing, the gamma-irradiation effects were totally removed over the wavelength range 390-800 nm and the concentrations of Fe3+ and Yb3+ were slightly increased. For the first time, the gamma-irradiation-induced valence changes between Yb3+ and Yb2+ ions in Yb: YAP crystals have been observed. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The improved workability effect of latex in dry mortars has not been fully clarified. The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence cif the EVA copolymer on the cement hydration and on the rheological properties of cement pastes. The results pointed to a minor influence of EVA on cement hydration and to a ball-bearing effect. In fact, the shear thinning behavior of reference paste at 15 min after mixing changed to shear thickening owing to the EVA addition. This behavior could be explained by the decrease in the interparticle separation distance as consequence of the solid content increase in case of shearing detachment of weakly adhered EVA particles from the cement particles surfaces. The expected EVA plasticizing effect was observed at 60 min. Such behavior points to the stabilization of EVA on the cement particles surfaces, thus resulting in a steric barrier effect. A controlled study was undertaken to assess the effect of gamma irradiation on post-traumatic intraocular cellular proliferation. A standard perforating injury in the posterior segment of the rabbit eye was used to induce intraocular cellular proliferation and vitreo-retinal membrane formation. The site of injury was irradiated with an ophthalmic Cobalt60 applicator which provided a continuous source of gamma rays. Non-irradiated eyes developed traction retinal detachments associated with post-traumatic vitreo-retinal membranes. Irradiated eyes developed attenuated membranes or atrophic retinal scars, with the retina remaining attached. The membranes in non-irradiated eyes were highly cellular with abundant collagen, while irradiated membranes had fewer cells within a sparse collagen matrix. The episcleral fibroblasts, on autoradiographic studies appeared to be the main source of the cells that formed the proliferating tissue in both non-irradiated and irradiated eyes. In irradiated eyes both the inflammatory response and division of fibroblasts were delayed and reduced.

Soybeans are an important food due to their functional and nutritional characteristics. However, consumption by western populations is limited by the astringent taste of soybeans and their derivatives which results from the action of lipoxygenase, an enzyme activated during product processing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation on the chemical composition and specific activity of lipoxygenase in different soybean cultivars. Soybeans were stored in plastic bags and irradiated with doses of 2.5, 5 and 10 kGy. The chemical composition (moisture, protein, lipids, ashes, crude fiber, and carbohydrates) and lipoxygenase specific activity were determined for each sample. Gamma irradiation induced a small increase of protein and lipid content in some soybean cultivars, which did not exceed the highest content of 5% and 26%, respectively, when compared to control. Lipoxygenase specific activity decreased in the three cultivars with increasing gamma irradiation dose. In conclusion, the gamma irradiation doses used are suitable to inactivate part of lipoxygenase while not causing expressive changes in the chemical composition of the cultivars studied.
