The effect of growth interruption on the InAs deposition and its subsequent growth as self-assembled island structures, in particular the material transport process of the InAs layers has been investigated by photoluminescence and transmission electron microscopy measurements. InAs material in structures with only coherent islands transfers from the wetting layer to the formed islands and the growth interruption causes a red shift of PL peak energy. On the other hand, the PL peak shifts to higher energy in structures containing simultaneously coherent and noncoherent islands with dislocations. In this case, the noncoherent islands capture InAs material from the surrounding wetting layer as well as coherent islands, which casues a reduction in the size of these islands. The variations in the PL intensity and line width are also discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of interdot electronic coupling on photoluminescence (PL) spectra of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) has been systematically investigated combining with the measurement of transmission electron microscopy. The experimentally observed fast red-shift of PL energy and an anomalous reduction of the linewidth with increasing temperature indicate that the QD ensemble can be regarded as a coupled system. The study of multilayer vertically coupled QD structures shows that a red-shift of PL peak energy and a reduction of PL linewidth are expected as the number of QD layers is increased. On the other hand, two layer QDs with different sizes have been grown according to the mechanism of a vertically correlated arrangement. However, only one PL peak related to the large QD ensemble has been observed due to the strong coupling in InAs pairs. A new possible mechanism to reduce the PL linewidth of QD ensemble is also discussed.

Two types of InAs self-assembled Quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by Molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements showed that, compared to QDs grown on GaAs substrate, QDs grown on InGaAs layer has a significantly enhanced density. The short spacing (several nanometer) among QDs stimulates strong coupling and leads to a large red-shift of the 1.3 mu m photoluminescence (PL) peak. We study systematically the dependence of PL lifetime on the QDs size, density and temperature (1). We found that, below 50 K, the PL lifetime is insensitive to temperature, which is interpreted from the localization effects. As T increases, the PL lifetime increases, which can be explained from the competition between the carrier redistribution and thermal emission at higher temperature. The increase of carriers in QDs migrated from barriers and wetting layer (WL), and the redistribution of carriers among QDs enhance the PL lifetime as T increases. The thermal emission and non-radiative recombination have effects to reduce the PL lifetime at higher T. As a result, the radiative recombination lifetime is determined by the wave function overlapping of electrons and holes in QDs, and QDs with different densities have different PL lifetime dependence on the QDs size. The evolution of strain and structural properties of thick epitaxial InGaN layers grown on GaN with different thicknesses are investigated. It is found that, with increase in InGaN thickness, plastic relaxation via misfit dislocation generation becomes a more important strain relaxation mechanism. Accompanied with the relaxation of compressive strain, the In composition of InGaN layer increases and induces an apparent red-shift of the cathodoluminescence peak of the InGaN layer. On the other hand, the plastic relaxation process results in a high defect density, which degrades the structural and optical properties of InGaN layers. A transition layer region with both strain and In composition gradients is found to exist in the 450-nm-thick InGaN layer.

The chemical adsorption of sodium sulphide, ferrocene, hydroquinone and p-methyl-nitrobenzene onto the surface of a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs multiquantum well semiconductor was characterized by steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The changes in the PL response, including the red shift of the emission peak of the exciton in the quantum well and the enhancement of the PL intensity, are discussed in terms of the interactions of the adsorbed molecules with surface states.

Samples with different weight ratio of Se to zeolite 5A (Se composition) have been prepared by loading Se into the cages of zeolite 5A and the measurements of the absorption and Raman spectra have been carried out for the prepared samples. The measured absorption edges of the samples close and blue shifted to the value for monoclinic Se containing Se-8-ring, suggesting the formation of Se-8-ring clusters dagger in the cages. The continuous and broadening features of the absorption spectra are interpreted by the strong electron-phonon coupling in Se-8-ring clusters. The sample with high Se composition has a red shift of the absorption band edge relative to the samples with less Se composition. It is tentatively attributed to the reason that with different Se composition, single Se-8-ring clusters and double Se-8-ring clusters are formed in the cages of zeolite 5A. A single broad band at about 262 cm(-1) is observed in the Raman spectra, that gives the further support of the formation of Se-8-ring clusters. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of GaInNAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells and GaInNAs epilayers grown on GaAs substrate show an apparent "S-shape" temperature-dependence of the of dominant luminescence peak. At low temperature and weak excitation conditions, a PL peak related to nitrogen cluster-induced bound states can be well resolved in the PL spectra. It displays a remarkable red shift of up to 60 meV and is thermally quenched below 100 K with increasing temperature, being attributed to N-cluster induced bound states. The indium incorporation exhibits significant effect on the cluster formation. The rapid thermal annealing treatment at 750 C can essentially remove the bound states-induced peak.

Red shifts of emission wavelength of self-organized In(Cla)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) covered by 3 nm thick InxGa1-xAs layer with three different In mole fractions (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively) have been observed. Transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that the stress along growth direction in the InAs dots was reduced due to introducing the InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) covering layer instead of GaAs layer. Atomic force microscopy pictures show a smoother surface of InAs islands covered by an In0.2Ga0.8As layer. It is explained by the calculations that the redshifts of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the QDs covered by the InxGa1-xAs (x greater than or equal to 0.1) layers were mainly due to the reducing of the strain other than the InAs/GaAs intermixing in the InAs QDs. The temperature dependent PL spectra further confirm that the InGaAs covering layer can effectively suppress the temperature sensitivity of PL emissions. 1.3 mum emission wavelength with a very narrow linewidth of 19.2 mcV at room temperature has been obtained successfully from In,In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs self-assembled QDs covered by a 3-nm In0.2Ga0.2As strain reducing layer. We report a comparative quantum-chemical study of the electronic structures and optical properties of a series of cationic complexes [M(ppy)(2)(N--N)](+) (N--N = Hcmbpy = 4-carboxy-4'-methylbpy, M = Rh (Rh1), Ir(Ir2); N--N = H(2)dcbpy = 4,4'-dicarboxy-bpy, M = Rh (Rh3) and Ir (Ir4)). The theoretical calculation reveals that the increased number of -COOH groups on the bpy ligand can decrease the energy levels of LUMO more than HOMO and narrow down the HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, which results in the red-shifted of the lowest-lying absorption and phosphorescent spectra. The lowest-lying singlet absorptions were categorized as d(M,M = Rh or Ir) + pi(ppy) -->pi*(bpy) with MLCT and LLCT characters.

A poly(9,10-bisalkynyl-2,6-anthrylene) (PI) and five poly(9,10-bisarylethynyl-2,6-anthrylene)s(P2-P6) as soluble conjugated polymers have been synthesized and characterized. All polymers exhibit two-dimensional conjugated characteristics as indicated by absorption spectra comprising multi-bands in the range of 300-600 nm. Compared with P1, polymers P2-P5, which contain phenylethynyl substituents with the longer conjugation than alkynyl groups, exhibit a similar to 60 nm red shift of absorption edge. However, further increasing the conjugation length of the arylethynyl substituents (longer than phenylethynyl) has only a no effect on the conjugation of the polymer chains, while comparing the absorption spectra of P6 with those of P2-P5.

Cost-effective organic sensitizers will play a pivotal role in the future large-scale production and application of dye-sensitized solar cells. Here we report two new organic D-pi-A dyes featuring electron-rich 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene- and 2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-conjugated linkers, showing a remarkable red-shifting of photocurrent action spectra compared with their thiophene and bithiophene counterparts. On the basis of the 3-f{5'-[N,N-bis(9,9-dimethylfluorene-2-yl)phenyl]-2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-5-yl}2-cyanoacrylic acid dye, we have set a new efficiency record of 7.6% for solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic sensitizers. Importantly, the cell exhibits an excellent stability, keeping over 92% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h accelerated tests under full sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C. This achievement will considerably encourage further design and exploration of metal-free organic dyes for higher performance dye-sensitized solar cells.

One-step synthesis of Ru (bpy)(3) Cl-2-immobilized (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) silica nanoparticles (Ru-silica nanoparticles) for use in electrogenerated-chemiluminescence (ECL) detection is reported. Ru-silica nanoparticles are prepared by using the Stober method. Compared with free Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2, Ru-silica nanoparticles are seen to exhibit a red-shift of the UV-vis absorbance peak and a longer fluorescence lifetime, which are attributed to the electrostatic interaction of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) and silica. Because silica nanoparticles are used as immobilization matrices, the surfaces of Ru-silica nanoparticles are easily modified or functionalized via the assembly of other nanoparticles, such as Au. For ECL detection, Au-colloid-modified Ru-silica nanoparticles are immobilized on a 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane-modified indium tin oxide electrode surface by Au-S interaction; the surface concentration of electroactive Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 is obviously higher than that in silica films.

Luminescence functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 silica was realized by depositing a YVO4:Eu3+ phosphor layer on its surface via the Pechini sol-gel process, resulting in the formation of the YVO4:Eu3+@SBA-15 composite material. This material, which combines the mesoporous structure of SBA-15 and the strong red luminescence property of YVO4:Eu3+, can be used as a novel functional drug delivery system. The structure, morphology, porosity, and optical properties of the materials were well characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption, and photoluminescence spectra. As expected, the pore volume, surface area, and pore size of SBA-15 decrease in sequence after deposition of the YVO4:Eu3+ layer and the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU, drug). The IBU-loaded YVO4:Eu3+@SBA-15 system still shows the red emission of Eu3+ (617 nm, D-5(0)-F-7(2)) under UV irradiation and the controlled drug release property. Additionally, the emission intensity of Eu3+ increases with an increase in the cumulative released amount of IBU in the system, making the extent of drug release easily identifiable, trackable, and monitorable by the change of luminescence. The system has great potential in the drug delivery and disease therapy fields.
