This exploratory study expands on hospitality management literature, specifically on the influence of a supervisor’s gender in regards to employee job satisfaction within the casino-entertainment sector. Employee job satisfaction was analyzed using company, department, and supervisor variables based on 961 surveys. The study’s results suggest that employees with male supervisors have a higher employee satisfaction level than employees with supervisors that are female. Hospitality organizations are therefore encouraged to create leadership programs to ensure women are a part of corporate leadership’s success formula for the future.

The process mapping is an important tool in the management of organizations, allowing better levels of productivity, quality and reciprocity concerning the implementation and decision-making. It benefits in a clear way the process organization and assures the manager a macro vision of the system. In this sense, the objective of this study is to describe the mapping process as it occurs in the Januario Cicco Maternity School–MEJC. The bibliographic and descriptive research included interviews, observations and researches in many databases. The study analyzed the limiting points of the detected flow trying to find a better comprehension of the flow of patients in the maternity in order to offer the gestors the information necessary to improve the quality of the assistance as well as a general view of the flow of patients and any change detected there. As a result, we believe that the process mapping may become a relevant factor to the organizational management of MEJC, in view that it is an element that can contribute to ease up the management of information studied, considering that the perfect change of information inside a complex system will produce improvements in all spheres of this institution.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of the study is to review recent studies published from 2007-2015 on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting with a view to identifying the emerging topics and methods studied and to pointing future research directions in the field. Design/Methodology/approach Articles on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting published in both science citation index (SCI) and social science citation index (SSCI) journals were identified and analyzed. Findings This review found that the studies focused on hotel demand are relatively less than those on tourism demand. It is also observed that more and more studies have moved away from the aggregate tourism demand analysis, while disaggregate markets and niche products have attracted increasing attention. Some studies have gone beyond neoclassical economic theory to seek additional explanations of the dynamics of tourism and hotel demand, such as environmental factors, tourist online behavior and consumer confidence indicators, among others. More sophisticated techniques such as nonlinear smooth transition regression, mixed-frequency modeling technique and nonparametric singular spectrum analysis have also been introduced to this research area. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this review is that the articles included in this study only cover the English literature. Future review of this kind should also include articles published in other languages. The review provides a useful guide for researchers who are interested in future research on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting. Practical implications This review provides important suggestions and recommendations for improving the efficiency of tourism and hospitality management practices. Originality/value The value of this review is that it identifies the current trends in tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting research and points out future research directions.

This research examines the influence of restaurant stimuli (i.e., chefs, service staff, other customers, food quality, and atmospherics) on diners’ emotions and loyalty to teppanyaki restaurants. In teppanyaki restaurants, chefs take orders from diners, prepare food in front of diners, and serve dishes to diners. Although the importance of chefs has been acknowledged by scholars, empirical research on the influence of chefs on diners has been scarce. To augment the literature on how chefs influence diners, this research incorporates “chef’s image” into an extended Mehrabian-Russell model (M-R model) to conceptualize diner loyalty to teppanyaki restaurants. A total of 308 diners from Taiwan were recruited. After examining their completed questionnaires, this study found that chef’s image, service quality, and food quality can affect the positive and negative emotions of diners. Moreover, other diners and restaurant atmospherics affect only the negative emotions of diners. Both positive and negative emotions can affect diner loyalty to teppanyaki restaurants. In addition, the managerial implications of this study are discussed.

The ability to manipulate gene expression promises to be an important tool for the management of infectious diseases and genetic disorders. However, a major limitation to effective delivery of therapeutic RNA to living cells is the cellular toxicity of conventional techniques. Team PANACEA’s research objective was to create new reagents based on a novel small-molecule delivery system that uses a modular recombinant protein vehicle consisting of a specific ligand coupled to a Hepatitis B Virus-derived RNA binding domain (HBV-RBD). Two such recombinant delivery proteins were developed: one composed of Interleukin-8, the other consisting of the Machupo Virus GP1 protein. The ability of these proteins to deliver RNA to cells were then tested. The non-toxic nature of this technology has the potential to overcome limitations of current methods and could provide a platform for the expansion of personalized medicine.

Comparative case study Abstract: Every organization should be concerned about analyzing its quality costs, since that analysis, besides allowing identification of aspects to improve is a fundamental tool for the management organs of those organizations. This analysis of quality costs should also be carried out on firms’ activities related to their fiscal practice. However, no reference is found in the literature to the relationship between these two: quality costs and business taxation. This research analyzes the relationship between the principles of quality costs and business taxation in Portugal. So being, and to carry out this study, the case study methodology was chosen, more specifically the comparative case study methodology, through the understanding, and previous demonstration, that it is the most appropriate methodology for the complexity of the subject analyzed. Besides relating quality costs to business taxation, this study allowed presentation and application of a methodology for implementing the Prevention – Appraisal – Failure (PAF) model in companies’ fiscal practice which decreases the costs of this practice, reach the economic level of quality as well as an efficiency index, which allows at any time to determine the achieved level of efficiency and how to improve it. All in all, what this study demonstrated is that Portuguese companies, in general, do not apply the principles of quality costs to their taxation department or fiscal practice, whether that activity is performed internally in the firm or externally.

Tourist accommodation expenditure is a widely investigated topic as it represents a major contribution to the total tourist expenditure. The identification of the determinant factors is commonly based on supply-driven applications while little research has been made on important travel characteristics. This paper proposes a demand-driven analysis of tourist accommodation price by focusing on data generated from room bookings. The investigation focuses on modeling the relationship between key travel characteristics and the price paid to book the accommodation. To accommodate the distributional characteristics of the expenditure variable, the analysis is based on the estimation of a quantile regression model. The findings support the econometric approach used and enable the elaboration of relevant managerial implications.
