Three apparently distinct and different approaches have been proposed to account for the crystallographic features of diffusion-controlled precipitation. These three models are based on (a) an invariant line in the habit plane, (b) the parallelism of a pair of Deltags that are perpendicular to the habit plane and (c) the parallelism of a pair of Moire fringes that are in turn parallel to the habit plane. The purpose of the present paper is to show that these approaches are in fact absolutely equivalent and that when certain conditions are satisfied they are essentially the same as the recent edge-to-edge matching model put forward by the authors. The potential cytotoxicity of two hexanedione food additives (2,3 and 3,4 isomers) was evaluated in comparison with the neurotoxic hexane metabolite 2,5-hexanedione in the human SK-N-SH neuroblastoma line using the MTT assay to indicate mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity and flow cytometry to monitor the cell cycle over 48 h. The IC50s of the 2,3-hexanedione (3.3 ± 0.1 mM) and 3,4-hexanedione (3.5 ± 0.1 mM), indicated that the sensitivity of the cells was approximately seven-fold greater to these toxins compared with the 2,5 derivative (IC50 of 22.4 ± 0.2 mM). Comparison between the respective IC50s of the 2,3-hexanedione and 3,4-hexanedione revealed no difference between the two isomers in terms of their effects on MTT turnover. With flow cytometry analysis, all three hexanediones showed increases in apoptosis within their respective concentration ranges of toxicity shown previously by MTT. In the presence of 2,5-hexanedione, between 8.5 and 17 mM concentrations, there was a significant increase in apoptotic nucleoids which was accompanied by a significant fall in the percentage of nucleoids in the G0/G1 phase (72.4 ± 0.3-45.3 ± 0.6%,), and a rise in the numbers of cells in the G2/M phase. This is likely to indicate growth arrest at cell cycle G2/M checkpoint in response to toxin damage. G2/M accumulation was also shown with 3,4 and 2,3 HD, which was maximal at much lower concentrations (approximately 4 and 3 mM, respectively). Arrest at G1 and G2/M phase is indicative of inhibition of the cell cycle at the stages of DNA replication and chromosome segregation, respectively. It was also apparent that flow cytometry, rather than the MTT assay, did distinguish between the effects of the α-diketones 2,3-hexanedione and 3,4-hexanedione on the cell cycle. At a concentration of 5.8 mM 3,4-hexanedione, the percentage of apoptotic nucleoids was 10.9 ± 0.8% whilst apoptosis induced by 3,4-hexanedione had already reached a maximal level of 60.4 ± 0.5%. In summary, flow cytometry indicated that the 3,4-hexanedione derivative was more toxic than its 2,3 isomer and that both food additives caused interruption in the neuroblastoma cell cycle and further investigation may be required to assess if these α-diketones present in diets pose any possible risks to human health. © 2006 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. A theoretical model is developed to describe the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in fiber transmission systems in the quasi-linear regime, with periodically inserted in-line lumped nonlinear optical devices. Stable autosoliton solutions are obtained for a particular application of the general theory.

The effects of the alpha-diketone derivatives 2,3- and 3,4-hexanediones were investigated in three non-neuronal cell lines (MCF7, HepG2 and CaCo-2) as well as in the neuroblastoma line, SH-SY5Y. The MTT reduction assay was employed to determine the necrotic effects of the alpha-diketones and the neurotoxin 2,5-hexanedione over 4, 24 and 48 hr exposures. Flow cytometry was also used to study the effects of the three isomers on the cell cycle of the SH-SY5Y line only. With 2,5-hexanedione, the mean MTT IC50 decreased more than 10-fold from 4 to 48 hr. The toxicities of both alpha-diketones were similar, with a more than 18-fold increase in sensitivity of the SH-SY5Y at 24 hr compared to that of 4 hr. With flow cytometry at 48 hr, SH-SY5Y apoptosis with 2,5-hexanedione rose throughout the concentration range evaluated (0-30 mM) while 2,3- and 3,4-hexanediones showed apoptosis over the concentration range 1-1.6 mM, with 3,4-hexanedione being the more potent compared to the 2,3-isomer. At 1.6 mM nearly all the cells had entered apoptosis in the presence of the 3,4-isomer, (94.9 ± 1.4%) but only 57.5 ±4.1% of the 2,3-isomer-treated cells had reached that stage. The 2,3-and 3,4-isomers in diets alone may not pose a serious threat to human health. Further studies may be necessary to evaluate the effects of other dietary components on their toxicity. These alpha-diketones also display a degree of toxic selectivity towards neuroblastoma cells, which may have therapeutic implications.

In 2000 A. Alesina and M. Galuzzi presented Vincent’s theorem “from a modern point of view” along with two new bisection methods derived from it, B and C. Their profound understanding of Vincent’s theorem is responsible for simplicity — the characteristic property of these two methods. In this paper we compare the performance of these two new bisection methods — i.e. the time they take, as well as the number of intervals they examine in order to isolate the real roots of polynomials — against that of the well-known Vincent-Collins-Akritas method, which is the first bisection method derived from Vincent’s theorem back in 1976. Experimental results indicate that REL, the fastest implementation of the Vincent-Collins-Akritas method, is still the fastest of the three bisection methods, but the number of intervals it examines is almost the same as that of B. Therefore, further research on speeding up B while preserving its simplicity looks promising.

In 1917 Pell (1) and Gordon used sylvester2, Sylvester’s little known and hardly ever used matrix of 1853, to compute(2) the coefficients of a Sturmian remainder — obtained in applying in Q[x], Sturm’s algorithm on two polynomials f, g ∈ Z[x] of degree n — in terms of the determinants (3) of the corresponding submatrices of sylvester2. Thus, they solved a problem that had eluded both J. J. Sylvester, in 1853, and E. B. Van Vleck, in 1900. (4) In this paper we extend the work by Pell and Gordon and show how to compute (2) the coefficients of an Euclidean remainder — obtained in finding in Q[x], the greatest common divisor of f, g ∈ Z[x] of degree n — in terms of the determinants (5) of the corresponding submatrices of sylvester1, Sylvester’s widely known and used matrix of 1840. Regional climate models (RCMs) provide reliable climatic predictions for the next 90 years with high horizontal and temporal resolution. In the 21st century northward latitudinal and upward altitudinal shift of the distribution of plant species and phytogeographical units is expected. It is discussed how the modeling of phytogeographical unit can be reduced to modeling plant distributions. Predicted shift of the Moesz line is studied as case study (with three different modeling approaches) using 36 parameters of REMO regional climate data-set, ArcGIS geographic information software, and periods of 1961-1990 (reference period), 2011-2040, and 2041-2070. The disadvantages of this relatively simple climate envelope modeling (CEM) approach are then discussed and several ways of model improvement are suggested. Some statistical and artificial intelligence (AI) methods (logistic regression, cluster analysis and other clustering methods, decision tree, evolutionary algorithm, artificial neural network) are able to provide development of the model. Among them artificial neural networks (ANN) seems to be the most suitable algorithm for this purpose, which provides a black box method for distribution modeling.

Physiological signals, which are controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), could be used to detect the affective state of computer users and therefore find applications in medicine and engineering. The Pupil Diameter (PD) seems to provide a strong indication of the affective state, as found by previous research, but it has not been investigated fully yet. ^ In this study, new approaches based on monitoring and processing the PD signal for off-line and on-line affective assessment ("relaxation" vs. "stress") are proposed. Wavelet denoising and Kalman filtering methods are first used to remove abrupt changes in the raw Pupil Diameter (PD) signal. Then three features (PDmean, PDmax and PDWalsh) are extracted from the preprocessed PD signal for the affective state classification. In order to select more relevant and reliable physiological data for further analysis, two types of data selection methods are applied, which are based on the paired t-test and subject self-evaluation, respectively. In addition, five different kinds of the classifiers are implemented on the selected data, which achieve average accuracies up to 86.43% and 87.20%, respectively. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is utilized to investigate the discriminating potential of each individual feature by evaluation of the area under the ROC curve, which reaches values above 0.90. ^ For the on-line affective assessment, a hard threshold is implemented first in order to remove the eye blinks from the PD signal and then a moving average window is utilized to obtain the representative value PDr for every one-second time interval of PD. There are three main steps for the on-line affective assessment algorithm, which are preparation, feature-based decision voting and affective determination. The final results show that the accuracies are 72.30% and 73.55% for the data subsets, which were respectively chosen using two types of data selection methods (paired t-test and subject self-evaluation). ^ In order to further analyze the efficiency of affective recognition through the PD signal, the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) was also monitored and processed. The highest affective assessment classification rate obtained from GSR processing is only 63.57% (based on the off-line processing algorithm). The overall results confirm that the PD signal should be considered as one of the most powerful physiological signals to involve in future automated real-time affective recognition systems, especially for detecting the "relaxation" vs. "stress" states.^

College personnel are required to provide accommodations for students who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HoH), but few empirical studies have been conducted on D/HoH students as they learn under the various accommodation conditions (sign language interpreting, SLI, real-time captioning, RTC, and both). Guided by the experiences of students who are D/HoH at Miami-Dade College (MDC) who requested RTC in addition to SLI as accommodations, the researcher adopted Merten’s transformative-emancipatory theoretical framework that values perceptions and voice of students who are D/HoH. A mixed methods design addressed two research questions: Did student learning differ for each accommodation? What did students experience while learning through accommodations? Participants included 30 students who were D/HoH (60% women). They represented MDC’s majority minority population: 10% White (non-Hispanic), 20% Black (non-Hispanic, including Haitian/Caribbean), 67% Hispanic, and 3% other. Hearing loss, ranged from severe-profound (70%) to mild-moderate (30%). All were able to communicate with American Sign Language: Learning was measured while students who were D/HoH viewed three lectures under three accommodation conditions (SLI, RTC, SLI+RTC). The learning measure was defined as the difference in pre- and post-test scores on tests of the content presented in the lectures. Using repeated measure ANOVA and ANCOVA, confounding variables of fluency in American Sign Language and literacy skills were treated as covariates. Perceptions were obtained through interviews and verbal protocol analysis that were signed, videotaped, transcribed, coded, and examined for common themes and metacognitive strategies. No statistically significant differences were found among the three accommodations on the learning measure. Students who were D/HoH expressed thoughts about five different aspects of their learning while they viewed lectures: (a) comprehending the information, (b) feeling a part of the classroom environment, (c) past experiences with an accommodation, (d) individual preferences for an accommodation, (e) suggestions for improving an accommodation. They exhibited three metacognitive strategies: (a) constructing knowledge, (b) monitoring comprehension, and (c) evaluating information. No patterns were found in the types of metacognitive strategies used for any particular accommodation. The researcher offers recommendations for flexible applications of the standard accommodations used with students who are D/HoH.
