We give a partition of the critical strip, associated with each partial sum 1 + 2z + ... + nz of the Riemann zeta function for Re z < −1, formed by infinitely many rectangles for which a formula allows us to count the number of its zeros inside each of them with an error, at most, of two zeros. A generalization of this formula is also given to a large class of almost-periodic functions with bounded spectrum.

This paper shows that the conjecture of Lapidus and Van Frankenhuysen on the set of dimensions of fractality associated with a nonlattice fractal string is true in the important special case of a generic nonlattice self-similar string, but in general is false. The proof and the counterexample of this have been given by virtue of a result on exponential polynomials P(z), with real frequencies linearly independent over the rationals, that establishes a bound for the number of gaps of RP, the closure of the set of the real projections of its zeros, and the reason for which these gaps are produced.

This paper shows, by means of Kronecker’s theorem, the existence of infinitely many privileged regions called r -rectangles (rectangles with two semicircles of small radius r ) in the critical strip of each function Ln(z):= 1−∑nk=2kz , n≥2 , containing exactly [Tlogn2π]+1 zeros of Ln(z) , where T is the height of the r -rectangle and [⋅] represents the integer part.

In this paper we give a new characterization of the closure of the set of the real parts of the zeros of a particular class of Dirichlet polynomials that is associated with the set of dimensions of fractality of certain fractal strings. We show, for some representative cases of nonlattice Dirichlet polynomials, that the real parts of their zeros are dense in their associated critical intervals, confirming the conjecture and the numerical experiments made by M. Lapidus and M. van Frankenhuysen in several papers.

Many studies on birds focus on the collection of data through an experimental design, suitable for investigation in a classical analysis of variance (ANOVA) framework. Although many findings are confirmed by one or more experts, expert information is rarely used in conjunction with the survey data to enhance the explanatory and predictive power of the model. We explore this neglected aspect of ecological modelling through a study on Australian woodland birds, focusing on the potential impact of different intensities of commercial cattle grazing on bird density in woodland habitat. We examine a number of Bayesian hierarchical random effects models, which cater for overdispersion and a high frequency of zeros in the data using WinBUGS and explore the variation between and within different grazing regimes and species. The impact and value of expert information is investigated through the inclusion of priors that reflect the experience of 20 experts in the field of bird responses to disturbance. Results indicate that expert information moderates the survey data, especially in situations where there are little or no data. When experts agreed, credible intervals for predictions were tightened considerably. When experts failed to agree, results were similar to those evaluated in the absence of expert information. Overall, we found that without expert opinion our knowledge was quite weak. The fact that the survey data is quite consistent, in general, with expert opinion shows that we do know something about birds and grazing and we could learn a lot faster if we used this approach more in ecology, where data are scarce. This paper reexamines the stability of uncertain closed-loop systems resulting from the nonsequential (NS) MIMO QFT design methodology. By combining the effect of satisfying both the robust stability and robust performance specifications in a NS MIMO QFT design, a proof for the stability of the uncertain closed-loop system is derived. The stability theorem proves that, subject to the satisfaction of a critical necessary and sufficient condition, the original NS MIMO QFT design methodology will provide a robustly stable closed-loop system. This necessary and sufficient condition provides a useful existence test for a successful NS MIMO QFT design. The results expose the salient features of the NS MIMO QFT design methodology. Two 2 x 2 MIMO design examples are presented to illustrate the key features of the stability, theorem.

We consider the boundary value problems for nonlinear second-order differential equations of the form u '' + a(t)f (u) = 0, 0 < t < 1, u(0) = u (1) = 0. We give conditions on the ratio f (s)/s at infinity and zero that guarantee the existence of solutions with prescribed nodal properties. Then we establish existence and multiplicity results for nodal solutions to the problem. The proofs of our main results are based upon bifurcation techniques. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. We consider boundary value problems for nonlinear second order differential equations of the form u + a(t) f(u) = 0, t epsilon (0, 1), u(0) = u(1) = 0, where a epsilon C([0, 1], (0, infinity)) and f : R --> R is continuous and satisfies f (s)s > 0 for s not equal 0. We establish existence and multiplicity results for nodal solutions to the problems if either f(0) = 0, f(infinity) = infinity or f(0) = infinity, f(0) = 0, where f (s)/s approaches f(0) and f(infinity) as s approaches 0 and infinity, respectively. To account for the preponderance of zero counts and simultaneous correlation of observations, a class of zero-inflated Poisson mixed regression models is applicable for accommodating the within-cluster dependence. In this paper, a score test for zero-inflation is developed for assessing correlated count data with excess zeros. The sampling distribution and the power of the test statistic are evaluated by simulation studies. The results show that the test statistic performs satisfactorily under a wide range of conditions. The test procedure is further illustrated using a data set on recurrent urinary tract infections. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This thesis presents experimental investigations of the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers in a nonlinear loop mirror (SOA-NOLM) and its application in all-optical processing. The techniques used are mainly experimental and are divided into three major applications. Initially the semiconductor optical amplifier, SOA, is experimentally characterised and the optimum operating condition is identified. An interferometric switch based on a Sagnac loop with the SOA as the nonlinear element is employed to realise all-optical switching. All-optical switching is a very attractive alternative to optoelectronic conversion because it avoids the conversion from the optical to the electronic domain and back again. The first major investigation involves a carrier suppressed return to zero, CSRZ, format conversion and transmission. This study is divided into single channel and four channel WDM respectively. The optical bandwidth which limits the conversion is investigated. The improvement of the nonlinear tolerance in the CSRZ transmission is shown which shows the suitability of this format for enhancing system performance. Second, a symmetrical switching window is studied in the SOA-NOLM where two similar control pulses are injected into the SOA from opposite directions. The switching window is symmetric when these two control pulses have the same power and arrive at the same time in the SOA. Finally, I study an all-optical circulating shift register with an inverter. The detailed behaviour of the blocks of zeros and ones has been analysed in terms of their transient measurement. Good agreement with a simple model of the shift register is obtained. The transient can be reduced but it will affect the extinction ratio of the pulses.
