Hard photons from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions are examined as a potential probe of the nuclear symmetry energy within a transport model. Effects of the symmetry energy on the yields and spectra of hard photons are found to be generally smaller than those due to the currently existing uncertainties of both the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections and the photon production probability in the elementary process pn -> pn gamma. Very interestingly, nevertheless, the ratio of hard photon spectra R-1/2(gamma) from two reactions using isotopes of the same element is not only approximately independent of these uncertainties but also quite sensitive to the symmetry energy. For the head-on reactions of Sn-132 + Sn-124 and Sn-112 + Sn-112 at E-beam/A = 50 MeV, for example, the R-1/2(gamma) displays a rise up to 15% when the symmetry energy is reduced by about 20% at rho = 1.3 rho(0) which is the maximum density reached in these reactions. Influences of the isospin dependence of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section and the momentum-dependant interaction (MDI) on the isotope scaling are investigated by using the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model (IQMD). The results show that both the isospin dependence of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section and the momentum-dependent interaction affect the isoscaling parameters appreciably and independently. The influence caused by the isospin dependence of two-body collision is relatively larger than that from the MDI in the mean field. Aiming at exploring the implication of isoscaling behaviour, which the statistical equilibrium in the reaction is reached, the statistical properties in the mass distribution and the kinetic energy distribution of the fragments simulated by IQMD are presented.

The axially deformed relativistic mean field theory with the force NLSH has been performed in the blocked BCS approximation to investigate the proper-ties and structure of N=Z nuclei from Z=20 to Z=48. Some ground state quantities such as binding energies, quadrupole deformations, one/two-nucleon separation energies, root-mean-squaxe (rms) radii of charge and neutron, and shell gaps have been calculated. The results suggest that large deformations can be found in medium-heavy nuclei with N=Z=38-42. The charge and neutron rms radii increase rapidly beyond the magic number N=Z=28 until Z=42 with increasing nucleon number, which is similar to isotope shift, yet beyond Z=42, they decrease dramatically as the structure changes greatly from Z=42 to Z=43. The evolution of shell gaps with proton number Z can be clearly observed. Besides the appearance of possible new shell closures, some conventional shell closures have been found to disappear in some region. In addition, we found that the Coulomb interaction is not strong enough to breakdown the shell structure of protons in the current region.

In order to study the effects of different nitrogen source and concentration on the growth rate and fatty acid composition, a marine microalga Ellipsoidion sp. with a high content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was cultured in media with different nitrogen sources and concentrations. During the pre-logarithmic phase, the alga grew faster with ammonium as N source than with nitrate, but the reverse applied during the post-logarithmic phase. The alga grew poorly in N-free medium or medium with urea as the sole N source. In the same growth phase, ammonium medium resulted in higher yield of total lipid, but the EPA yield did not differ significantly different from that using nitrate medium. The maximum growth rate occurred in medium containing 1.28 mmol L-1 sodium nitrate, while maximum EPA and total lipid contents were reached at 1.92 mmol L-1, when EPA accounted for 27.9% total fatty acids. The growth rate kept stable when NH4Cl ranged from 0.64 to 2.56 mmol L-1, and the maximum content of total lipid and EPA occurred in the medium with 2.56 mmol L-1 NH4Cl. The EPA content was higher in the pre- than post-logarithmic phase, though the total lipid content was lower. The highest EPA content expressed as percent total fatty acid was 27.9% in nitrate medium and and 39.0% in ammonium medium.

Based on the data of wind from 11 meteorological observation stations in recent 40 years, the paper analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of resultant drift potential in the Badain Jaran Desert. The 84 sand samples were collected and analysed from three compound crescentic dunes developped on southeast part of The Badain Jaran Desert. Through the statistics and computation of wind data and the analysis of Grain Size over compound crescentic dunes in The Badain Jaran Desert, this paper analyzed the characteristics of the blown sand activities in in this area. The following viewpoints were obtained: 1 Most parts of The Badain Jaran Desert are dominated by northwest wind and sub-dominated by west wind, while prevailing wind in southeast part of The Badain Jaran Desert is southeast, different froms other places. 2 The Badain Jaran Desert is strongly zoned from its surounding meteorological observation stations. It has impressively high DP and RDP value. Except for Ding Xin Station in medium wind power environment, the left stations are all belongs to high wind-power districts. 3 From the seventies till now, the value of DP and RDP in The Badain Jaran Desert shows a decending trend except for the RDP value of Guai Zihu Station in the north. This trend indicates that the wind power for the moment of The Badain Jaran Desert is far lower than it in the seventies. 4 Adopting sand rose map for classification of wind environments in defferent parts of The Badain Jaran Desert, Ejinaqi is Narrow unimodal wind regimes, Ding xin, Bayinmaodao and Ayouqi districts obtuse bimodal and Guaizihu complex. 5 Resultant drift directions in most parts of the Badain Jaran desert are southeast, which indicates annual net sand in these areas drifted from the northwest to the southeast of the desert, which consists with the analysis results of grain size of predecessors. RDD in Ayouqi staion shows the net sand drifted from the southeast to the northwest in the recent 40 years, which may attribute to the reason that, the Badain Jaran desert lies in the zone influenced by both northwest and southeast wind, the southeast monsoon was strengthened and northwest wind became weaker than a former time. So, if sand mareria is sufficient, there are two different drift directions, namely two sorts of sand source, existed in Badain Jaran desert at least. 6 Based on analysis results of meteorologic data and grain size, blown sand activities is that, in most parts of Badain Jaran desert in the past 40 years, northwest wind transported net sand from the northwest part to the southeast part of The Badain Jaran Desert. And besides this, analysis of collected sand samples also shows that, in the southeast part of Badain Jaran desert, grain size do fined from southeast to northwest. Combining results of meteorologic data in the southeast part, it can infered that southeast monsoon took blown sand to the inner desert from its southeast part.

The coda of seismic waves consists of that part of the signal after the directly arrivials. In a finite medium, or in one that is strongly heterogeneous, the coda is dominated by waves which have repeatedly sampled the medium. Small changes in a medium which may have no detectable influence on the first arrivals are amplified by this repeated sampling and may thus be detectable in the coda. Because of this, coda wave is widely used in detecting micro variations in medium。 In this paper, we give a general view of the theory and application of coda wave, especially coda wave interferometry. We focus on discussing the application of coda wave interferometry on data source of active situ experiment。 First, we apply coda wave interferometry in a short time period situ experiment which last for three days. We also apply the method of coda wave interferometry in a situ experiment which last for one month. Daily circle variations of seismic velocity around the experiment site were obtained, and we also observed that the velocity variations in the experiment site have a significant correlation with the environment factors, including air temperature, barometric pressure, solid earth tide and the level of rainfall. We find that the velocity variation during this period is up to 10-3. The relationship between velocity variation and changes in air temperature, barometric pressure and solid earth tide was analyzed with least square linear fitting .The velocity has no dependence on the air temperature. But velocity has a change of 10-6--10-7 when the barometer or earth tide change per Pa. Generally, we conclude the work and results of previous researchers, and we also display our works and results. We hopes to contribute to the future research of coda wave interferometry.

A new neural network architecture is introduced for the recognition of pattern classes after supervised and unsupervised learning. Applications include spatio-temporal image understanding and prediction and 3-D object recognition from a series of ambiguous 2-D views. The architecture, called ART-EMAP, achieves a synthesis of adaptive resonance theory (ART) and spatial and temporal evidence integration for dynamic predictive mapping (EMAP). ART-EMAP extends the capabilities of fuzzy ARTMAP in four incremental stages. Stage 1 introduces distributed pattern representation at a view category field. Stage 2 adds a decision criterion to the mapping between view and object categories, delaying identification of ambiguous objects when faced with a low confidence prediction. Stage 3 augments the system with a field where evidence accumulates in medium-term memory (MTM). Stage 4 adds an unsupervised learning process to fine-tune performance after the limited initial period of supervised network training. Each ART-EMAP stage is illustrated with a benchmark simulation example, using both noisy and noise-free data. A concluding set of simulations demonstrate ART-EMAP performance on a difficult 3-D object recognition problem.

We present a neural network that adapts and integrates several preexisting or new modules to categorize events in short term memory (STM), encode temporal order in working memory, evaluate timing and probability context in medium and long term memory. The model shows how processed contextual information modulates event recognition and categorization, focal attention and incentive motivation. The model is based on a compendium of Event Related Potentials (ERPs) and behavioral results either collected by the authors or compiled from the classical ERP literature. Its hallmark is, at the functional level, the interplay of memory registers endowed with widely different dynamical ranges, and at the structural level, the attempt to relate the different modules to known anatomical structures.

Capacitation is essential for fertilization of ovulated oocytes. Capacitation is correlated with activation of a signal transduction pathway leading to protein tyrosine phosphorylation, an essential prerequisite for fertilization. Oviductin has been shown to bind to the acrosomal cap and the equatorial segment region of the sperm head. In light of findings reported in previous studies, we hypothesized that estrus stage-specific oviductin (EOV) enhances tyrosine phosphorylation. Immunofluorescent detection by light and confocal microscopy and immunogold labeling by electron microscopy and surface replica techniques were used to localize tyrosine phosphorylated proteins to the equatorial segment region and midpiece after incubation in medium in the presence or absence of EOV. In the presence of EOV, an increase in tyrosine phosphorylation in the equatorial segment region was observed as early as 5 minutes after incubation. On prolonging incubation in medium containing EOV immunostaining further increased, indicative of increased levels of tyrosine phosphorylation of sperm proteins as capacitation proceeds. Regardless of the presence or absence of EOV, phosphotyrosine expression was observed along the tail, specifically at the midpiece. However, this reactivity was enhanced in the presence of EOV. Western blot analysis of NP-40 extractable and non-extractable sperm proteins confirmed these observations. NP-40 extractable sperm proteins (25, 37, 44kDa) and non-extractable sperm proteins (70, 83, 90kDa) showed increased intensity when sperm were capacitated in the presence of EOV after 5-, 60-, 120- and 180-minutes of capacitation. Mass spectrophotometric analysis identified enolase, ATP-specific succinyl CoA, succinate CoA ligase, zona pellucida binding protein, heat shock protein 90, aconitase and hexokinase as proteins that undergo enhancement in tyrosine phosphorylation in the presence of EOV. The proteins identified are known to be involved in specific functions including cellular metabolism, molecular chaperoning and normal sperm development. In summary, the present investigation has provided new evidence showing that sperm capacitated in vitro in the presence of EOV display an enhanced expression of tyrosine phosphorylation compared to sperm incubated in capacitating medium alone. These results indicate that inclusion of oviductin in media used for in vitro fertilization (IVF) may improve success rates of IVF by enhancing the signaling pathways involved in sperm capacitation.

PF4 has previously been shown to have potent inhibitory effects on myoactivity of somatic muscle strips from the nematode, Ascaris suum. This study examined the bioactivity and metabolic stability of position 2- and position 5-modified analogues of PF4. Although the analogues [Leu(5)] PF4, [Ala(2)]PF4, [Gly(2)]PF4, [Ala(2),Leu(5)]PF4, and [Gly(2),Leu(5)]PF4 all had qualitatively similar inhibitory effects on A. suum somatic muscle strips, their effects were quantitatively distinguishable and had the order of potency: PF4 = [Leu(5)] PF4 >> [Ala(2)]PF4 = [Ala(2),Leu(5)] PF4 >> [Gly(2)] PF4 = [Gly(2),Leu(5)] PF4. Leu(5) for Ile(5) substitutions in PF4 did not alter the activity of this peptide; however, Gly(2)/Ala(2) for Pro(2) substitutions reduced, but did not abolish, peptide activity. Peptide stability studies revealed that [Gly(2)]PF4(2-7) and -(3-7) and [Ala(2)]PF4(2-7), -(3-7), and -(4-7) fragments were generated following exposure to A. suum somatic muscle strips. However, the parent peptide (PF4) was not metabolized and appeared to be resistant to the sequential cleavages of native aminopeptidases. Observed analogue metabolism appeared to be due to the activity of released aminopeptidases as identical fragments were generated by incubation in medium that had been exposed to somatic muscle strips and from which the strips had been removed prior to peptide addition. It was found that the muscle stretching and bath mixing characteristics of the tension assay led to more effective release of soluble enzymes from muscle strips and thus greater peptide degradation. These studies reveal that Pro(2) in PF4 is not essential for the biological activity of this peptide; however, it does render the peptide resistant to the actions of native nematode aminopeptidases.

Mesenchymal stromal cells are adult stem cells found mostly in the bone marrow. They have immunosuppressive properties and they have been successfully applied as biological therapy in several clinical trials regarding autoimmune diseases. Despite the great number of clinical trials, MSCs’ action is not fully understand and there are no identified markers that correlate themselves with the immunomodulatory power. A lipidomic approach can solve some of these problems once lipids are one of the major cells’ components. Therefore, in this study cells’ lipidome was analysed and its deviations were evaluated according to the medium of culture and to the presence of pro-inflammatory stimuli, mimicking physiological conditions in which these cells are used. This was the first study ever made that aimed to analyse the differences in the phospholipid profile between mesenchymal stromal cells non-stimulated and stimulated with proinflammatory stimulus. This analysis was conducted in both cells cultured in medium supplemented with animal serum and in cells cultured in a synthetic medium. In cells cultured in the standard medium the levels of phosphatidylcholine (PC) species with shorter fatty acids (FAs) acyl chains decreased under pro-inflammatory stimuli. The level of PC(40:6) also decreased, which may be correlated with enhanced levels of lysoPC (LPC)(18:0) - an anti-inflammatory LPC - observed in cells subjected to TNF-α and IFN-γ. Simultaneously, the relative amounts of PC(36:1) and PC(38:4) increased. TNF-α and IFN- γ also enhanced the levels of phosphatidylethanolamine PE(40:6) and decreased the levels of PE(38:6). Higher expression of phosphatidylserine PS(36:1) and sphingomyelin SM(34:0) along with a decrease in PS(38:6) levels were observed. However, in cells cultured in a synthetic medium, TNF-α and IFN-γ only enhanced the levels of PS(36:1). These results indicate that lipid metabolism and signaling is modulated during mesenchymal stromal cells action.
