Successful introduction of information technology applications in various operations of hotel management is vital to most service firms. In recent decades, technologies of information, automation, and communication are increasingly recognized as essential components of a hotel company’s strategic plan. In this study, 62 super-deluxe hotels (5 star), deluxe hotels (4 star), and tourist hotels (3 star) in Korea are examined for differences in the impact of information technology services on guest’ satisfaction, guest convenience, and operational efficiency. The findings generally suggest that the impacts of information technology-enhanced services vary according to the category of hotels in Korea. The results of the study are expected to assist managers in the selections and implementation of information technology systems in their hotel.

The Spring 1992 issue of Hospitality Review featured Part I of this series on the impetus to internationalization of the hospitality industry, as well as the modes of overseas expansion by American firms. In Part 11, the author concludes with a look at the organization of overseas activities in their evolutionary stages and considers, as well, who some of the major international competitors to North American firms are in the international market and in North America. The article concludes with a brief consideration of opportunities for employment overseas.

Drug and alcohol abuse in the hospitality industry is an ongoing problem, reflective of business as a whole. A series of surveys were conducted at national drug rehabilitation centers seeking information from patients currently or formerly employed in the hotel and restaurant industry. The author identifies a number of problem indicators and makes recommendations relevant to resolutions.

The author describes yield management and the technology used to implement yield management in hotels, issues in usefulness, and legal issues concerning the use of yield management. A look into the future is provided, along with a critique of what further research may be needed in order to raise the level of usefulness of yield management systems in the hotel industry to that found in the airlines.

The high ranking received by the FIU Hospitality Review is evidence of the many researchers and industry executives who have contributed over the past two decades.

Although there are more than 7,000 properties using lodging yield management systems (LYMSs), both practitioners and researchers alike have found it difficult to measure their success. Considerable research was performed in the 1980s to develop success measures for information systems in general. In this work the author develops success measures specifically for LYMSs.

This research identified organizational environmental attributes that present great challenges and potential derailment as perceived by- three' levels of management in contracted managed services within acute care hospitals. ANOVA was used to determine it the three groups of management differed significantly in their responses to a questionnaire about the relative importance of the organizational environmental attributes.

Rapid tourism development in China has led to an influx of hotels invested in and operated by multi-national hotel companies. The authors examine the impact of cultural differences on employee behavior in China and UK hotels and offer recommendations for expatriate hotel managers to effectively develop human resource management styles while operating properties in China.

With the rise of smoking restrictions and bans in the hospitality industry the author discusses solutions that are implemented to protect the workforce and guests from involuntary smoking. Historical and societal contexts are drawn, and enforcement of smoking bans as well as their economic impact is explored in an international perspective, primarily since US researchers have propelled the research on smoking and health issues. The author illustrates that there has been no way to avoid enforcements of strict smoking restrictions, and the struggle to do so could just delay the process and waste resources.

Understanding the political structure of educations and applying principles of political action may help avoid the destruction of educations alliances formed between partners of divergent backgrounds. The author discusses how this form of analysis may also be of benefit in understanding the problem technically-oriented hospitality programs from abroad often have articulating with the academic administrations in most American universities.

There is a plethora of options about what constitutes “accessibility.” Countries like England and Canada are making significant progress in improving accommodations. The Americans with Disability Act is being revised, but critics say hotels are not complying with either the letter or the spirit of the law. The author, a retired FIU professors who writes about disabled travel from his wheelchair, explores these issues from a very personal point of view.
