Trapped electrons, located close to the channel of a transistor, are promising as data storage elements in non-classical information processing. Cryogenic microwave spectroscopy has shown that these electrons give rise to high quality factor resonances in the drain current and a post excitation dynamic behaviour that is related to the system lifetime. Using a floating poly-silicon gate transistor, single shot spectroscopy is performed to characterise the dynamic behaviour during excitation. This behaviour is seen to be dominated by the decay of the transient component, which gives rise to oscillations around the high quality factor resonance. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope Dy168 has been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV Se82 beam and an Er170 target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the γ rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground-state rotational band of Dy168 have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+→2+ transition in Dy170 was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of total Routhian surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

We study by Raman scattering the shear and layer breathing modes in multilayer MoS2. These are identified by polarization measurements and symmetry analysis. Their positions change significantly with the number of layers, with different scaling for odd and even layers. A chain model can explain the results, with general applicability to any layered material, allowing a reliable diagnostic of their thickness. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Molybdenum disulpide, a novel two-dimensional semiconductor, was studied using optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. Mono and trilayer samples grown by chemical vapour deposition were compared to reveal their dynamic electrical response. © 2013 IEEE.

Femtosecond laser pulses are used in order to induce dielectric breakdown in gaseous mixtures, namely in some reactive air-methane mixtures. The light emitted from the laser induced plasma was analyzed while the main emission features are identified and assigned. From the analysis of the emission spectra, a linear relationship was found to hold between the intensity of some spectral features and methane content. Finally, the use of femtosecond laser induced breakdown as a tool for the in situ determination of the composition of gaseous mixtures (e.g., equivalence ratio) is also discussed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. We obtained a low density of coupled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) with an emission wavelength of around 1.3 mu m at room temperature. Atomic force microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy reveal that the dot size difference and the lateral displacement between the two dots are related to the spacer thickness. Spectroscopy of the coupled QD ensembles is considerably influenced by the spacer thickness.

Circular dichromatic absorption difference spectroscopy is developed to measure the spin diffusion dynamics of electrons in bulk n-GaAs. This spectroscopy has higher detection sensitivity over homodyne detection of spin-grating-diffracted signal. A model to describe circular dichromatic absorption difference signal is derived and used to fit experimental signal to retrieve decaying rate of spin gratings. A spin diffusion constant of D-s=201 +/- 25 cm(2)/s for bulk n-GaAs has been measured at room temperature using this technique and is close to electron diffusion constant (D-c), which is much different from the case in GaAs quantum wells where D-s is markedly less than D-c.

Nonpolar a-plane [(1120)] GaN samples have been grown on r-plane [(1102)] sapphire substrates by low-pressure metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition. The room-temperature first and second order Raman scattering spectra of nonpolar a-plane GaN have been measured in surface and edge backscattering geometries. All of the phonon modes that the selection rules allow have been observed in the first order Raman spectra. The frequencies and linewidths of the active modes have been analyzed. The second order phonon modes are composed of acoustic overtones, acoustic-optical and optical-optical combination bands, and optical overtones. The corresponding assignments of second order phonon modes have been made. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Selectively photo-excited C-V spectroscopy has been measured in an In0.5Ga0.5As quantum dots (QDs)-embedded, three barrier-two well heterostructure. By comparing with a theoretical capacitance model, the pure capacitive contribution from In0.5Ga0.5As QDs, due to tunnelling coupling between In0.5Ga0.5As QDs and In0.18Ga0.82As quantum well, has been used to obtain the density of charges from photo-excited In0.5Ga0.5As QDs in a very straightforward manner.

Contactless: electroreflectance has been employed at room temperature to study the Fermi level pinning at undoped-n(+) GaAs surfaces covered by 1.6 and 1.8 monolayer (ML) InAs quantum dots (QDs). It is shown that the 1.8 ML InAs QD moves the Fermi level at GaAs surface to the valence band maximum by about 70 meV compared to bare GaAs, whereas 1.6 ML InAs on GaAs does not modify the Fermi level, It is confirmed that the modification of the 1.8 ML InAs deposition on the Fermi level at GaAs surface is due to the QDs, which are surrounded by some oxidized InAs facets, rather than the wetting layer.

We present a detailed study of the interband excitonic transitions of InAs/GaAs self-organized quantum dots (QDs) based on photovoltage (PV) photoreflectance (PR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. At room temperature, the interband absorption transitions of QDs have been observed by using PV spectrum, which clearly exhibits four well-resolved excitonic absorption peaks. The absorption line shape is Gaussian-like. Furthermore, the corresponding excitonic transitions are also observed in PR experiment at 77 K. The first derivative of a Gaussian profile can fit the experimental data well. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(98)00743-8]
