Surface sediments and bivalves were collected from the Changjiang Estuary in December 2003 and November 2004, respectively. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in these samples were measured with high-resolution chromatography (HRGC)/High Resolution Mass Spectrometer (HRMS). The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs and toxic equivalent (TEQ) were 169.83 +/- 119.63 and 0.81 +/- 0.36 pg/g dry weight (dw) in sediments, and 580.33 +/- 240.17 and 7.24 +/- 3.65 pg/g dw in bivalves. The homolog compositions of PCDD/Fs were similar among samples, the most abundant congener was octa-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) and then octa-chlorinated dibenzofuran (OCDF) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-hepta-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (HOCDD). The herbicide pentachlorophenol (PCP) and sodium pentachlorophenol (Na-PCP) were proved the main source of PCDD/Fs in this area.

The retention equations ln k' = A + B/T of 49 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and 4 polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) in gas chromatography (GC) have been investigated to evaluate the properties of regression coefficients A and B. The quantitative relationships between A and B values of PCDDs and those of PBDDs are found. The regression equations derived have correlation coefficients greater than 0.997. The A, B values of any PBDD can be predicted by using the A, B values of the PCDD according to these relationships. Using these predicted A and B values, the retention times of all PBDDs can be predicted at any temperature program. It is very useful to identify the peak position of any PBDD because at present there are only a few standards of PBDDs available. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new approach to study the quantitative relationships between chromatographic retentions and molecular structures of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) is described. The retention equations of PCDDs log k' = A + B/T in gas chromatography (GC) are used to evaluate the properties of the regression coefficients A and B, which have been widely accepted as highly reliable chromatographic retentions. The quantitative relationships between the A, B values and the molecular structures are found. The molecular descriptors given for the first time in this article are very effective. As a result, the regression equations are derived with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9995. The A, B values of PCDDs with no standards available have been predicted according to these relationships. They are very useful in chromatographic identification. The retention times of all PCDDs can be conveniently predicted at any temperature program. Compared with the data obtained from the relevant experiments, the results of prediction are very accurate. Cleanup and quantification of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans and polychlorinated biphenyls
Resumo:
By using modern techniques of isotope dilution, high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry and multiple ions detection, an effective cleanup, qualitative and quantitative method was developed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyls analysis. Based on the chromatographic relative retentions of PCDD/F, a software was established for automatic peak recognition of all the isomers from tetra- to octachlorine PCDD/F. It ensured good reliability and accuracy of the analytical data.
Resumo:
A software has been developed for the peak recognition of 136 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) after high resolution gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). Based on the retention times of C-13 labelled 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F internal standards, the retention times of all PCDD and PCDF can be calibrated automatically and accurately. Therefore, it is very convenient to identify the peaks by comparing the retention of samples and the calibrated retention times of their chromatograms. Hence, this approach is very significant because it is impossible to obtain always a standard chromatogram and PCDD/F analysis are very expensive and time consuming. The calibration results can be transferred to Excel for calculation. The approach is a first step to store costly and environmentally relevant data for future application.

Manipulation of the spin degree of freedom has been demonstrated in a spin-polarized electron plasma in a heterostructure by using exchange-interaction-induced dynamic spin splitting rather than the Rashba and Dresselhaus types, as revealed by time-resolved Kerr rotation. The measured spin splitting increases from 0.256 meV to 0.559 meV as the bias varies from -0.3 V to -0.6 V. Both the sign switch of the Kerr signal and the phase reversal of Larmor precessions have been observed with biases, which all fit into the framework of exchange-interaction-induced spin splitting. The electrical control of it may provide a new effective scheme for manipulating spin-selected transport in spin FET-like devices. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2008.

Homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC on off-oriented Si-face(0001) substrates was performed by using the step-controlled epitaxy technique in a newly developed low-pressure hot-wall CVD (LP-HWCVD) system with a horizontal air-cooled quartz tube at around 1500 degreesC and 1.33 x 10(4) Pa by employing SiH4 + C2H4 + H-2. In-situ doping during growth was carried out by adding NH3 gas into the precursor gases. It was shown that the maximum Hall mobility of the undoped 4H-SiC epilayers at room temperature is about 430 cm(2) (.) V-1 (.) s(-1) with a carrier concentration of similar to 10(16) cm(-3) and the highest carrier concentration of the N-doped 4H-SiC epilayer obtained at NH3 flow rate of 3 sccm is about 2.7 x 10(21) cm(-3) with a mobility of 0.75 cm(2) (.) V-1 (.) s(-1). SiC p-n junctions were obtained by epitaxially growing N-doped 4H-SiC epilayers on Al-doped 4H-SiC substrates. The C - V characteristics of the diodes were linear in the 1/C-3 - V coordinates indicating that the obtained p-n junctions were graded with a built-in voltage of 2.7 eV. The room temperature electroluminescence spectra of 4H-SiC p-n junctions are studied as a function of forward current. The D-A pair recombination due to nitrogen donors and the unintentional, deep boron center is dominant at low forward bias, while the D-A pair recombination due to nitrogen donors and aluminum acceptors are dominant at higher forward biases. The p-n junctions could operate at temperature of up to 400 degreesC, which provides a potential for high-temperature applications.

N-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructure has been grown by a disilane (Si2H6) gas and Ge solid sources molecular beam epitaxy system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n- and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements show that the grown heterostructure has a good quality, the boron doping is confined to the SiGe base layer, and the Ge has a trapezoidal profile. Postgrowth P implantation was performed to prepare a good ohmic contact to the emitter. Heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been fabricated using the grown heterostructure and a common-emitter current gain of 75 and a cut-off frequency of 20 GHz at 300 K have been obtained. Three n-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructures with different layer thickness and doping concentration have been grown by a home-made gas source molecular-beam epitaxy (GSMBE) system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n-and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. Heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) have been fabricated using these structures and a current gain of 40 at 300 K and 62 at 77 K have been obtained. The influence of thickness and doping concentration of the deposited layers on the current gain of the HBTs is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

As reported by other authors, we have also observed that the Si growth rate decreases with increasing phosphine (PH3) flow rate in gas source-Si molecular beam epitaxy using phosphorous (P) as a n-type dopant. Why small quantity PH3 can affect Si growth rate? Up to now, the quantitative characterization of PH3 flow influence on Si growth rate is little known. In this letter, the PH, influence will be analyzed in detail and a model considering strong P surface segregation and its absorption of hydrogen will be proposed to characterize the effect. Phosphor-doped nano-crystalline silicon ((n))nc-Si:H) films are successfully grown on the p-type (100) oriented crystal silicon ((p) c-Si) substrate by conventional plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. The films are obtained using high H-2 diluted SiH4 as a reaction gas source and using PH3 as the doping gas source of phosphor atoms. Futhermore, the heterojunction diodes are also fabricated by using (n)nc-Si:H films and (p)c-Si substrate. I-V properties are investigated in the temperature range of 230-420K. The experimental results domenstrate that (n)nc-Si:H/(p) c-Si heterojunction is a typical abrupt heterojunction having good rectifing and temperature properties. Carrier transport mechanisms are tunneling - recombination model at forward bias voltages. In the range of low bias voltages ( V-F< 0.8 V), the current is determined by recombination at the (n)nc-Si:H side of the space charge region, while the current becomes tunneing at higher bias voltages( V-F>1.0 V). The present heterojunction has high reverse breakdown voltage ( > - 75 V) and low reverse current (approximate to nA).

Uniform and high phosphorous doping has been demonstrated during Si growth by GSMBE using disilane and phosphine. The p-n diodes, which consist of a n-Si layer and a p-SiGe layer grown on Si substrate, show a normal I-V characteristic. A roughening transition during P-doped Si growth is found. Ex situ SEM results show that thinner film is specular. When the film becomes thicker, there are small pits of different sizes randomly distributed on the flat surface. The average pit size increases, the pit density decreases, and the size distribution is narrower for even thicker film. No extended defects are found at the substrate interface or in the epilayer. Possible causes for the morphological evolution are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Biomass gasification is an important method to obtain renewable hydrogen, However, this technology still stagnates in a laboratory scale because of its high-energy consumption. In order to get maximum hydrogen yield and decrease energy consumption, this study applies a self-heated downdraft gasifier as the reactor and uses char as the catalyst to study the characteristics of hydrogen production from biomass gasification. Air and oxygen/steam are utilized as the gasifying agents. The experimental results indicate that compared to biomass air gasification, biomass oxygen/steam gasification improves hydrogen yield depending on the volume of downdraft gasifier, and also nearly doubles the heating value of fuel gas. The maximum lower heating value of fuel gas reaches 11.11 MJ/ N m(3) for biomass oxygen/steam gasification. Over the ranges of operating conditions examined, the maximum hydrogen yield reaches 45.16 g H-2/kg biomass. For biomass oxygen/steam gasification, the content of H-2 and CO reaches 63.27-72.56%, while the content Of H2 and CO gets to 52.19-63.31% for biomass air gasification. The ratio of H-2/CO for biomass oxygen/steam gasification reaches 0.70-0.90, which is lower than that of biomass air gasification, 1.06-1.27. The experimental and comparison results prove that biomass oxygen/steam gasification in a downdraft gasifier is an effective, relatively low energy consumption technology for hydrogen-rich gas production.

InxGa1-xAs/InP (0.39 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.68) strained-layer quantum wells having 20 wells with thickness of 50 Angstrom in a P-i-N configuration were grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE). High-resolution X-ray diffraction rocking curves show the presence of up to seven orders of sharp and intense satellite reflection, indicative of the structural perfection of the samples. Low-temperature photoluminescence and low-temperature absorption spectra were used to determine the exciton transition energies as a function of strain. Good agreement is achieved between exciton transition energies obtained experimentally at low temperature with those calculated using the deformation potential theory.
