Understanding the impact of political violence on child maladjustment is a matter of international concern. Recent research has advanced a social ecological explanation for relations between political violence and child adjustment. However, conclusions are qualified by the lack of longitudinal tests. Toward examining pathways longitudinally, mothers and their adolescents (M = 12.33, SD = 1.78, at Time 1) from 2-parent families in Catholic and Protestant working class neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed measures assessing multiple levels of a social ecological model. Utilizing autoregressive controls, a 3-wave longitudinal model test (T1, n = 299; T2, n = 248; T3, n = 197) supported a specific pathway linking sectarian community violence, family conflict, childrens insecurity about family relationships, and adjustment problems.

Burkholderia cenocepacia are opportunistic Gram-negative bacteria that can cause chronic pulmonary infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. These bacteria demonstrate a high-level of intrinsic antibiotic resistance to most clinically useful antibiotics complicating treatment. We previously identified 14 genes encoding putative Resistance-Nodulation-Cell Division (RND) efflux pumps in the genome of B. cenocepacia J2315, but the contribution of these pumps to the intrinsic drug resistance of this bacterium remains unclear.

Topic Background: Peace education initiatives in schools are often based on social psychological theories assuming that social identity affects ingroup and outgroup attitudes and, in turn, behaviors relating to relevant outgroups. However, research evidence on the role of children's social identity has often failed to take account of different social identity dimensions or to conceptualise behavior in the context of children's understandings of the social world. While recent research relating to bullying and bystander behavior amongst children has addressed the latter point, this has rarely been considered in conjunction with a differentiated view of social identity. This paper is therefore distinctive as it will address the role of social identity dimensions with regards to reported behavior as captured in bystander scenarios relating to outgroup derogation. This is particularly important in the context of divided societies, where peace education initiatives are crucial in promoting positive community relations for the future and where such initiative may be hampered by communities' concerns about loss of identity. In the context of Northern Ireland, a divided society emerging from conflict, social identity, outgroup attitudes and behaviours have been key concepts addressed by peace educators
for many years.

Research questions: This paper therefore set out to investigate the relationship between social identity, measured as affiliation with the group and exploration of its meaning for the child, sectarian attitudes and pupils' reported willingness to challenge sectarian bullying in their school environment in Northern Ireland.
Research methods: The findings are based on the analysis of a baseline survey, which forms part of a randomised control trial of an intervention aimed at promoting community relations and reconciliation. The trial includes 35 primary and post-primary schools and about 800 pupils from 8-11 years old who completed an online questionnaire at the start of the programme. Main instruments for this study included adapted scales measuring identity affiliation and identity exploration, sectarian attitudes and scenarios capturing pupils' intentions in bystander situations relating to sectarian bullying.

Analytical framework: Results are analysed using regression analysis and additionally investigate gender and religious differences.

Research findings and/or contribution to knowledge: Results are discussed in the light of the role of social identity dimensions and their relationship to outgroup attitudes and willingness to challenge outgroup derogation. The paper concludes with potential implications for peace education initiatives in Northern Ireland and beyond.

A novel high performance bit parallel architecture to perform square root and division is proposed. Relevant VLSI design issues have been addressed. By employing redundant arithmetic and a semisystolic schedule, the throughput has been made independent of the size of the array.

A high-performance VLSI architecture to perform combined multiply-accumulate, divide, and square root operations is proposed. The circuit is highly regular, requires only minimal control, and can be reconfigured for every cycle. The execution time for each operation is the same. The combination of redundancy and pipelining results in a throughput independent of the wordsize of the array. With current CMOS technology, throughput rates in excess of 80 million operations per second are achievable.

Real time digital signal processing demands high performance implementations of division and square root. This can only be achieved by the design of fast and efficient arithmetic algorithms which address practical VLSI architectural design issues. In this paper, new algorithms for division and square root are described. The new schemes are based on pre-scaling the operands and modifying the classical SRT method such that the result digits and the remainders are computed concurrently and the computations in adjacent rows are overlapped. Consequently, their performance exceeds that of the SRT methods. The hardware cost for higher radices is considerably more than that of the SRT methods but for many applications, this is not prohibitive. A system of equations is presented which enables both an analysis of the method for any radix and the parameters of implementations to be easily determined. This is illustrated for the case of radix 2 and radix 4. In addition, a highly regular array architecture combining the division and square root method is described. © 1994 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

In real time digital signal processing, high performance modules for division and square root are essential if many powerful algorithms are to be implemented. In this paper, a new radix 2 algorithms for SRT division and square root are developed. For these new schemes, the result digits and the residuals are computed concurrently and the computations in adjacent rows are overlapped. Consequently, their performance should exceed that of the radix 2 SRT methods. VLSI array architectures to implement the new division and square root schemes are also presented.

The protective role of strength of group identity was examined for youth in a context of protracted political conflict. Participants included 814 adolescents (Mage = 13.61, SD = 1.99 at Time 1) participating in a longitudinal study in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Utilizing hierarchical linear modeling, the results show that the effect of exposure to sectarian antisocial behaviors has a stronger effect on youth emotion problems for older adolescents. The results also show that youth with higher strength of group identity reported fewer emotion problems in the face of sectarian antisocial behavior but that this buffering effect is stronger for Protestants compared to Catholics. Implications are discussed for understanding the role of social identity in postaccord societies.
