Intrusive Community Noise Negatively Impacts South Florida Residents

This study investigated how intrusive noises affect local university students in their communities. The Community Noise Survey solicited information about types of bothersome noises, how often these noises were bothersome, activities intruded upon by these noises, feelings elicited by noise intrusions, and what participants did to abate the noises.

A Study of Teacher Efficacy of Special Education Teachers of English Language Learners with Disabilities

This research examined the perceived teacher efficacy of special education teachers of English Language Learners with disabilities. The results demonstrate the positive correlation between proficiency in the language of the target students and teacher efficacy. An analysis of responses yielded two major themes, organizational and teacher issues, affecting teacher performance.

Shifting Our Gaze to the Strengths of Alternative Education Students

This study addresses the need for educators to understand what matters for alternative education students. Three male alternative education students were interviewed about their educational memories, realities and aspirations. Results revealed family influences prevailed over inhospitable socioeconomic factors in students’ educational choices. Findings supported recommendations for alternative education teacher development.

Children as Change Agents: The Influence of Integrating Environmental Education into Home Learning Projects on Families and Community Members

Environmental education focusing on sustainability should be integrated into the elementary curriculum. Learning experiences should include home learning projects that are relevant to the students, involve active participation, and stimulate discussions with their families. Content and Methods of Teaching Literacy: The Effect of One-on-One Tutoring in Preservice Clinical Education in Two Low-Performing, Diverse School Settings on the Effectiveness of Preservice Teachers’ Reading Instruction

This is a study of preservice teachers’ ability to teach reading to struggling, diverse students, after participating in a school-embedded course incorporating a one-on-one tutorial directly supervised by reading experts. Changes in reading performance as well as plans to analyze changes in the preservice teachers will be discussed.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Inquiry-Based Learning in the General Education and Inclusion Science Classroom

This study sought to apply the concepts of inquiry-based learning by increasing the number of laboratory experiments conducted in two science classes, and to identify the challenges of this instruction for students with special needs. Results showed that the grades achieved through lab write-ups greatly improved grades overall.

Although bilingual education has never enjoyed widespread support in the USA, several models can be distinguished for language minority students: transitional bilingual education, dual language (or two-way immersion) programs, and speech community models. In this literature review, these models are examined to determine which is the most effective.

This paper examines the ways in which the legacy of school segregation in South Florida has affected the education of Haitian students and continues to limit their prospects. The high schools that serve neighborhoods with concentrated Haitian populations achieve shockingly poor academic results, which negatively affect Haitian student academic achievement.

Under the ABC Umbrella: Orphanages, Rights, and Education in Mexico

The National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in Mexico assists children in orphanages. This paper provides an overview of its current practices, and advocates a holistic educational/social model for “alternative orphanages,” integrating Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the rights-based approach. The model complements DIF’s social efforts.

This phenomenological study explored students’ experiences of being silenced in their higher education classroom. Themes emerging from this study include the influence of past experiences, devaluation of students’ previous knowledge and learning, use of communication patterns to silence students, and internalization of conflict and oppression resulting from being silenced.

Pro-Literacy: A Historical Evaluation and Presentation of Strategies That Have Influenced the Development of the Volunteer Based Adult Education

This paper will present a brief history and work of Pro-Literacy and identify the aspects that serve as a model for other volunteer organizations. Pro- Literacy is an adult literacy program that has been successful in sustaining growth and promoting literacy nationally.

Project POWER: Promoting Our Will Through Education and Research

Project POWER utilized participatory action research to critically examine issues facing students in an urban high school, setting the stage for the co-creation of spaces for student-teacher dialogue. The project culminated in a dialogue between the students and their future teachers at a university in Miami, Florida.
