This thesis is focused on the development of heteronuclear correlation methods in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, where the spatial dependence of the dipolar coupling is exploited to obtain structural and dynamical information in solids. Quantitative results on dipolar coupling constants are extracted by means of spinning sideband analysis in the indirect dimension of the two-dimensional experiments. The principles of sideband analysis were established and are currently widely used in the group of Prof. Spiess for the special case of homonuclear 1H double-quantum spectroscopy. The generalization of these principles to the heteronuclear case is presented, with special emphasis on naturally abundant 13C-1H systems. For proton spectroscopy in the solid state, line-narrowing is of particular importance, and is here achieved by very-fast sample rotation at the magic angle (MAS), with frequencies up to 35 kHz. Therefore, the heteronuclear dipolar couplings are suppressed and have to be recoupled in order to achieve an efficient excitation of the observed multiple-quantum modes. Heteronuclear recoupling is most straightforwardly accomplished by performing the known REDOR experiment, where pi-pulses are applied every half rotor period. This experiment was modified by the insertion of an additional spectroscopic dimension, such that heteronuclear multiple-quantum experiments can be carried out, which, as shown experimentally and theoretically, closely resemble homonuclear double-quantum experiments. Variants are presented which are well-suited for the recording of high-resolution 13C-1H shift correlation and spinning-sideband spectra, by means of which spatial proximities and quantitative dipolar coupling constants, respectively, of heteronuclear spin pairs can be determined. Spectral editing of 13C spectra is shown to be feasible with these techniques. Moreover, order phenomena and dynamics in columnar mesophases with 13C in natural abundance were investigated. Two further modifications of the REDOR concept allow the correlation of 13C with quadrupolar nuclei, such as 2H. The spectroscopic handling of these nuclei is challenging in that they cover large frequency ranges, and with the new experiments it is shown how the excitation problem can be tackled or circumvented altogether, respectively. As an example, one of the techniques is used for the identification of a yet unknown motional process of the H-bonded protons in the crystalline parts of poly(vinyl alcohol).

The challenge of the present work was to synthesize and to characterize new classes of N-containing polymers via palladium-catalyzed aryl amination. This work was inspired by a desire to combine the properties of high-performance polymers such as PEKs with those of N-containing conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), poly(aromatic amides) (PAAs), and the ready synthesis of N-containing simple aromatic compound by the Buchwald-Hartwig reaction. Careful investigation of a model reaction was carried out to provide insights into the formation of side products which will have a negative effect upon the molecular weight or upon the materials properties of the desired polymers in the polycondensation reaction. In this thesis, five new different polymer classes namely, poly(imino ketone)s (PIKs), poly(imino acridine)s (PIAcs), poly(imino azobenzene)s (PIAzos), poly(imino fluorenone)s (PIFOs), and poly(imino carbazole)s (PICs) were synthesized and fully characterized by means of 1H-NMR, elemental analysis, UV, FT-IR, X-ray, GPC, TGA, DSC, DMA, and dielectric spectroscopy. To optimize the polycondensation process, the influence of the concentration, temperature, ligands and the reactivity of the halogen containing monomers were investigated. A temperature of 100-165 °C and a concentration of 30-36 % were found to be optimal for the palladium-catalyzed polycondensation to produce polymer with high molecular weight (Mn = 85 900, Mw = 474 500, DP = 126). Four different ligands were used successfully in the Pd-catalyzed process, of which the Pd/BINAP system was found to be the most effective catalyst, producing the highest yield and highest molecular weight polymers. It was found that the reactivity decreases strongly with increasing electronegativity of the halogen atoms, for example better yields, and higher molecular weights were obtained by using dibromo compounds than dichloro compounds while difluoro compounds were totally unreactive. Polymer analogous transformations, such as the protonation reaction of the ring nitrogens in PIAcs, or of the azobenzene groups of PIAzos, the photo and thermal cis-trans-isomerization of PIAzos, and of poly(imino alcohol)s were also studied. The values of the dielectric constants of PIKs at 1 MHz were in the range 2.71-3.08. These low values of the dielectric constant are lower than that of "H Film", a polyimide Kapton film which is one of the most preferred high-performance dielectrics in microelectronic applications having a dielectric constant of 3.5. In addition to the low values of the dielectric constants, PIKs have lower and glass transition temperatures (Tgs) than arimides such as Kapton which may make them more easily processable. Cyclic voltammetry showed that PICs exhibited low oxidation and reduction potentials and their values were shifted to low values with increasing degree of polymerization i.e. with increasing of the carbazole content in backbone of PICs (PIC-7, 0.44, 0.33 V, DP= 37, PIC-5, 0.63, 0.46, DP= 16, respectively).

ABSTRACT: In this work, proton conducting copolymers, polymer blends and composites containing phosphonic acid groups have been prepared. Proton conduction mechanisms in these materials are discussed respectively in both, the anhydrous and humidified state. Atom transfer radical copolymerization (ATRCP) of diisopropyl-p-vinylbenzyl phosphonate (DIPVBP) and 4-vinyl pyridine (4VP) is studied for the first time in this work. The kinetic parameters are obtained by using the 1H-NMR online technique. Proton conduction in poly(vinylbenzyl phosphonic acid) (PVBPA) homopolymer and its statistical copolymers with 4-vinyl pyridine (poly(VBPA-stat-4VP)s) are comprehensively studied in both, the “dry” and “wet” state. Effects of temperature, water content and polymer composition on proton conductivities are studied and proton transport mechanisms under various conditions are discussed. The proton conductivity of the polymers is in the range of 10-6-10-8 S/cm in nominally dry state at 150 oC. However, proton conductivity of the polymers increases rapidly with water content in the polymers which can reach 10-2 S/cm at the water uptake of 25% in the polymers. The highest proton conductivity obtained from the polymers can even reach 0.3 S/cm which was measured at 85oC with 80% relative humidity in the measuring atmosphere. Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) was grafted from the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles using ATRP in this work for the first time. Following this approach, silica nanoparticles with a shell of polymeric layer are used as basic particles in a polymeric acidic matrix. The proton conductivities of the composites are studied under both, humidified and dry conditions. In dry state, the conductivity of the composites is in the range of 10-10~10-4 S/cm at 150 oC. While in humid state, the composites show much higher proton conductivity. The highest proton conductivity obtained with the composites is 0.5 S/cm measured at 85oC with 80% relative humidity in the measuring atmosphere. The miscibility of poly (vinyl phosphonic acid) and PEO is studied for the first time in this work and a phase diagram is plotted based on a DSC study and optical microscopy. With this knowledge, homogeneous PVPA/PEO mixtures are prepared as proton-conducting polymer blends. The mobility of phosphonic acid groups and PEO in the blends is determined by 1H-MAS-NMR in temperature dependent measurements. The effect of composition and the role of PEO on proton conduction are discussed.

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) is a powerful technique to determine the diffusion of fluorescence molecules in various environments. The technique is based on detecting and analyzing the fluctuation of fluorescence light emitted by fluorescence species diffusing through a small and fixed observation volume, formed by a laser focused into the sample. Because of its great potential and high versatility in addressing the diffusion and transport properties in complex systems, FCS has been successfully applied to a great variety of systems. In my thesis, I focused on the application of FCS to study the diffusion of fluorescence molecules in organic environments, especially in polymer melts. In order to examine our FCS setup and a developed measurement protocol, I first utilized FCS to measure tracer diffusion in polystyrene (PS) solutions, for which abundance data exist in the literature. I studied molecular and polymeric tracer diffusion in polystyrene solutions over a broad range of concentrations and different tracer and matrix molecular weights (Mw). Then FCS was further established to study tracer dynamics in polymer melts. In this part I investigated the diffusion of molecular tracers in linear flexible polymer melts [polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyisoprene (PI)], a miscible polymer blend [PI and poly vinyl ethylene (PVE)], and star-shaped polymer [3-arm star polyisoprene (SPI)]. The effects of tracer sizes, polymer Mw, polymer types, and temperature on the diffusion coefficients of small tracers were discussed. The distinct topology of the host polymer, i.e. star polymer melt, revealed the notably different motion of the small tracer, as compared to its linear counterpart. Finally, I emphasized the advantage of the small observation volume which allowed FCS to investigate the tracer diffusions in heterogeneous systems; a swollen cross-linked PS bead and silica inverse opals, where high spatial resolution technique was required.

In this work, new promising proton conducting fuel cell membrane materials were characterized in terms of their structure and dynamic properties using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Structurally different, phosphonic acid (PA) containing materials were systematically evaluated for possible high-temperature operation (e.g. at T>100°C). Notably, 1H, 2H and 31P magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR provided insight into local connectivities and dynamics of the hydrogen bonded network, while packing arrangements were identified by means of heteronuclear dipolar recoupling techniques.rnThe first part of this work introduced rather crystalline, low molecular weight ionomers for proton conducting membranes, where six different geometries such as line, triangle, screw, tetrahedron, square and hexagon, were investigated. The hexagon was identified as the most promising geometry with high-temperature bulk proton conductivities in the range of 10-3 Scm-1 at a relative humidity of 50%. However, 2H NMR and TGA-MS data suggest that the bulk proton transport is mainly due to the presence of crystal water. Single crystal X-ray data revealed that in the tetrahedron phosphonic acids form tetrameric clusters isolating the mobile protons while the phosphonic acids in the hexagon form zigzag-type pathways through the sample.rnThe second part of this work demonstrates how acid-base pairing and the choice of appropriate spacers may influence proton conduction. Different ratios of statistical copolymers of poly (vinylphosphonic acid) and poly (4-vinylpyridine) were measured to derive information about the local structure and chemical changes. Though anhydrous proton conductivities of all statistical copolymers are rather poor, the conductivity increases to 10-2 S cm-1 when exposing the sample to relative humidity of 80%. In contrast to PVPA, anhydride formation of phosphonic acids in the copolymer is not reversible even when exposing the sample to a relative humidity of 100%.rnIn addition, the influence of both spacers and degree of backbone crystallinity on bulk proton conductivity was investigated. Unlike in systems such as poly benzimidazole (PBI), spacers were inserted between the protogenic groups along the backbone. It was found that dilution of the protogenic groups decreases the conductivity, but compared to PVPA, similar apparent activation energies for local motions were obtained from both variable temperature 1H NMR and impedance spectroscopy data. These observations suggest the formation of phosphonic acid clusters with high degrees of local proton motion, where only a fraction of motions contribute to the observable bulk proton conductivity. Additionally, it was shown that gradual changes of the spacer length lead to different morphologies.rnIn summary, applying advanced solid-state NMR and X-ray analysis, structural and dynamic phenomena in proton conducting materials were identified on a molecular level. The results were discussed with respect to different proton conduction mechanisms and may contribute to a more rational design or improvement of proton conducting membranes.rn

This dissertation deals with two specific aspects of a potential hydrogen-based energy economy, namely the problems of energy storage and energy conversion. In order to contribute to the solution of these problems, the structural and dynamical properties of two promising materials for hydrogen storage (lithium imide/amide) and proton conduction (poly[vinyl phosphonic acid]) are modeled on an atomistic scale by means of first principles molecular dynamics simulation methods.rnrnrnIn the case of the hydrogen storage system lithium amide/imide (LiNH_2/Li_2NH), the focus was on the interplay of structural features and nuclear quantum effects. For these calculations, Path-Integral Molecular Dynamics (PIMD) simulations were used. The structures of these materials at room temperature were elucidated; in collaboration with an experimental group, a very good agreement between calculated and experimental solid-state 1H-NMR chemical shifts was observed. Specifically, the structure of Li_2NH features a disordered arrangement of the Li lattice, which was not reported in previous studies. In addition, a persistent precession of the NH bonds was observed in our simulations. We provide evidence that this precession is the consequence of a toroid-shaped effective potential, in which the protons in the material are immersed. This potential is essentially flat along the torus azimuthal angle, which might lead to important quantum delocalization effects of the protons over the torus.rnrnOn the energy conversion side, the dynamics of protons in a proton conducting polymer (poly[vinyl phosphonic acid], PVPA) was studied by means of a steered ab-initio Molecular Dynamics approach applied on a simplified polymer model. The focus was put on understanding the microscopic proton transport mechanism in polymer membranes, and on characterizing the relevance of the local environment. This covers particularly the effect of water molecules, which participate in the hydrogen bonding network in the material. The results indicate that these water molecules are essential for the effectiveness of proton conduction. A water-mediated Grotthuss mechanism is identified as the main contributor to proton conduction, which agrees with the experimentally observed decay on conductivity for the same material in the absence of water molecules.rnrnThe gain in understanding the microscopic processes and structures present in this materials can help the development of new materials with improved properties, thus contributing to the solution of problems in the implementation of fuel cells.

The thesis can be divided in four parts and summarized as follows:(i) The investigation and development of a continuous flow synthesis procedure affording end-functional polymers by anionic polymerization and subsequent termination in one reaction step and on a multigram scale was carried out. Furthermore, the implementation of not only a single hydroxyl but multiple orthogonal functionalities at the chain terminus was achieved by utilizing individually designed, functional epoxide-based end-capping reagents.(ii) In an additional step, the respective polymers were used as macroinitiators to prepare in-chain functionalized block copolymers and star polymers bearing intriguing novel structural and material properties. Thus, the second part of this thesis presents the utilization of end-functional polymers as precursors for the synthesis of amphiphilic complex and in some cases unprecedented macromolecular architectures, such as miktoarm star polymers based on poly(vinyl pyridine), poly(vinyl ferrocene) and PEO.(iii) Based on these structures, the third part of this thesis represents a detailed investigation of the preparation of stimuli-responsive ultrathin polymer films, using amphiphilic junction point-reactive block copolymers. The single functionality at the block interface can be employed as anchor group for the covalent attachment on surfaces. Furthermore, the change of surface properties was studied by applying different external stimuli.(iv) An additional topic related to the oxyanionic polymerizations carried out in the context of this thesis was the investigation of viscoelastic properties of different hyperbranched polyethers, inspired by the recent and intense research activities in the field of biomedical applications of multi-functional hyperbranched materials.
