Ultrafine PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3 was omorphized through high-energy mechanical milling. The structural evolution through the omorphization process was accompanied by various characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed IR spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. A strong photoluminescence was measured at room temperature for amorphized PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3, and interpreted by means of high-level quantum mechanical calculations in the density functional theory frame-work. Three periodic models were used to represent the crystalline and amorphized PbZr0.20Ti0.80O3, and they allowed the calculation of electronic properties that are consistent with the experimental data and that explain the appearance of photoluminescence.

Blue-green and red photoluminescence (PL) emission in structurally disordered CaTiO3:Sm (CT:Sm) powders was observed at room temperature with laser excitation at 350.7 nm. The perovskite-like titanate CT:Sm powders prepared by a soft chemical processing at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The results indicate that the generation of the broad PL band is related to order-disorder degree in the perovskitelike structure. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Amorphous and crystalline powder of PLZ was prepared by using the polymeric precursor method. TGA-DSC (Thermal analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry) shows the decomposition of polymeric resin, an amorphous phase and the crystallization of powder. Raman scattering of powder shows an amorphous and semicrystalline phase at 450 and 550 degreesC, respectively. XRD (X-ray diffraction pattern) of powder shows high crystallinity at 700 degreesC/3 h. PL (Photoluminescence) analysis of powder at 300 degreesC/3 h shows a broad asymmetric peak at 585 nm and increases of calcining time led to intense peaks of PL at 300 degreesC/6 h. This emission could be attributed to Zr --> O from the oxygen-2p orbitals to the zirconate-3d orbitals. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline SnO2 quantum dots were synthesized at room temperature by hydrolysis reaction of SnCl2. The addition of tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide and the use of hydrothermal treatment enabled one to obtain tin dioxide colloidal suspensions with mean particle radii ranging from 1.5 to 4.3 nm. The photoluminescent properties of the suspensions were studied. The particle size distribution was estimated by transmission electron microscopy. Assuming that the maximum intensity photon energy of the photoluminescence spectra is related to the band gap energy of the system, the size dependence of the band gap energies of the quantum-confined SnO2 particles was studied. This dependence was observed to agree very well with the weak confinement regime predicted by the effective mass model. This might be an indication that photoluminescence occurs as a result of a free exciton decay process. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

A thermally activated photoluminescence memory effect, induced by a reversible order-disorder phase transition of the alkyl chains, is reported for highly organized bilayer alkyl/siloxane hybrids (see figure; left at room temperature, right at 120 degrees C). The emission energy is sensitive to the annihilation/formation of the hydrogen-bonded amide-amide array displaying a unique nanoscopic sensitivity (ca. 150 nm).

This work presents the study of substrate surface effects on rhodamine B-containing silica films obtained from TEOS (tetraethylorthosilicate) acid hydrolysis. Soda-lime glass substrates were treated with basic solution under different reaction times and temperatures. Rhodamine B-containing silica films were deposited on pre-treated substrates by the spin-coating method. The substrate surface directly affects film morphology and homogeneity. The films are formed by packed silica spheres which protect the dye against acid-base attack. Luminescence spectra present shifts on the dye emission maximum as expected for different pH values on the substrate surface depending on the alkaline treatment. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The magnetic order resulting from the indirect exchange in the metallic phase of a (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs double layer structure is studied via Monte Carlo simulation. The polarization of the hole gas is taken into account, establishing a self-consistency between the magnetic order and the electronic structure. The Curie-Weiss temperatures calculated for these low-dimensional systems are in the range of 50-80 K, and the dependence of the transition temperature with the GaAs separation layer is established. An intense and broad visible photoluminescence (PL) band was observed at room temperature in structurally disordered PbWO4 thin films. The scheelite lead tungstate (PbWO4) films prepared by the polymeric precursor method and annealed at different temperatures were structurally characterized by means of x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis. Quantum-mechanical calculations showed that the local disorder of the network modifier (Pb) has a very important role in the charge transfer involved in the green PL emission. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement, both indicating that the generation of the intense visible PL band is related to simultaneous structural order and disorder in the scheelite PbWO4 lattice.

This article reports a theoretical study based on experimental results for barium zirconate, BaZrO3 (BZ) thin films, using periodic mechanic quantum calculations to analyze the symmetry change in a structural order-disorder simulation. Four periodic models were simulated using CRYSTAL98 code to represent the ordered and disordered BZ structures. The results were analyzed in terms of the energy level diagrams and atomic orbital distributions to explain and understand the BZ photoluminescence properties (PL) at room temperature for the disordered structure based on structural deformation and symmetry changes. Pb1-XLaXTiO3 thin films, (X = 0.0; 13 and 0.27 mol%) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (1 1 1), Si (1 0 0) and glass substrates by spin coating, and annealed in the 200-300degreesC range in an O-2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used for the microstructural characterization of the thin films. Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature has been observed in thin films of (PbLa)TiO3. The films deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates present PL intensity greater than those deposited on glass and silicon substrates. The intensity of PL in these thin films was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment and lanthanum molar concentration. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
