The structure of the title compound, [RuCl3(NO)(AsPh3)2], has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The ruthenium atom is octahedrally coordinated with the arsine ligands in the trans configuration. The ν(NO) was found at 1869 cm-1 in the IR spectrum, which is consistent with the linearity of the RuNO bond angle. © 1995.

The pyH[trans-RuCl4(py)2](1) and pyH[trans-RuCl4(CO)(py)](2) complexes were synthesized and found to crystallize in space group P21/n, Z = 4 with a = 8.080(7), b = 22.503(7), c = 10.125(6) Å, β = 93.19(6)° for (1) and a = 7.821(1), b = 10.337(3), c = 19.763(3) Å, β = 93.07(1)° for (2). The structures were solved by Patterson and difference Fourier techniques and refined to R = 0.062 for (1) and R = 0.038 for (2). In both cases the Ru(III) ion is octahedrally coordinated to four co-planar chlorine atoms, the nitrogen of the pyridine rings or carbon from the carbon monoxide. Another protonated pyridine group, which forms the counter-cation completes the crystal structures. The UV-Vis absorption spectra show three bands: (1) 360 (ε = 1180 M-1 cm-1), 441 (ε = 3200 M-1 cm-1) and 532 nm (ε = 400 M-1 cm-1); (2) 315(ε = 1150 M-1 cm-1), 442 (ε = 3170 M-1 cm-1) and 530 nm (ε = 390 M-1 cm-1). The two higher energy bands were associated with ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions and a third band at lower energy was assigned to a d-d transition. Low temperature EPR data confirmed the presence of the paramagnetically active Ru(III) and it is consistent with axial symmetry of the complexes. The position of the stretching CO band in complex (2) is discussed in terms of metal-CO backbonding.

Fourteen complexes in the series [RuCl2(CO)(L)(PPh3)2] (where L = N-heterocycles) have been prepared and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry. A good correlation is found between observed and calculated electrochemical potentials; E1/2 vs pKa or (Gp, σm for a series of similar ligands. It is now reported that the carbonyl stretching frequency, νCO, and the 13C and 31P NMR signals do not correlate well with any of the physico-chemical parameters used (E1/2, Taft's and Hammett's parameters). This behaviour is probably due to the characteristics of the Ru(II) species, which does not transmit the steric and electron donor/acceptor properties of the ligands to the carbonyl group, or because the measurements are not able to detect the effect induced by the changes in the ligand L. Indeed, good correlations are obtained when the measurements directly involve the metal centre, as is the case in the E1/2 measurements. Crystals of o[RuCl2(CO)(4-pic)(PPh3)2] are monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 12.019(2), b = 13.825(3) and c = 22.253(3) . The structure was solved by the Patterson method and was refined by full-matrix least-squares procedure to R = 0.054 and Rw = 0.055, for 2114 reflections with I > 3σ(I). For L = 2-acetylpyridine and 2-methylimidazole, complexes with formulae [RuCl2(CO)(L)(PPh3)] · L and [RuCl2(CO)(L)2 (PPh3)], respectively, were obtained. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The fac-[RuCl3(NO)(dppb)] complex I has been prepared from solution of the correspondent mer isomer in refluxing methanol (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane). The mer-[RuCl3(NO)(diop)] (II) has been obtained from the mer-[RuCl3(diop)(H2O)] by bubbling NO for 1 h in dichloromethane (diop = 2S,3S-O-isopropylidene-2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane). The complexes have been characterized by microanalysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), IR and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopies. The crystal and molecular structures of these two compounds have been determined from X-ray studies. The mer-[RuCl3(NO)(dppb)] isomer III was characterized in solution by NMR spectra (31P{1H}, 1H{31P}, 31P-1H HETCORR, COSY 1H-1H, HMQC 1H-13C and HMBC 1H-13C). © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Soil samples collected in the campus, UNESP, Araraquara, SP, were employed to isolate and characterize fungi strains with potential pectinolytic enzymes. These enzymes have arisen great interest due to its increasing application in the food industry. Two hundred forty six strains were isolated based on the appearance of colony on PDA medium, morphology (septate mycelia, nonseptate conidiophore, black conidia, and clublike spore-bearing head), after 48 h of growth at 30°C. Strains were selected in solid medium containing pectin citrus as sole carbon source and 0.5% rutenium red. The characterization of pectinolytic production was performed in solid culture and batch fermentation medium containing pectin citrus. The enzyme pectinolytic production was evaluated at 30°C, without agitation in 100 mL of medium containing 2% pectin citrus, 0.2% ammonium sulphate, 0.2% magnesium sulphate, and 0.05% potassium phosphate. The maximum pectinolytic activity (15U/mL) was observed in the medium after Aspergillus sp CFCF-0492 growth, while Aspergillus sp CFCF-CC1 showed the higher level of the final biomass. The pectinolytic activity is more preserved when the fungi-spores were maintained in agar-Czapeck medium.

The discovery of the spatial uniform coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in rutheno-cuprates, RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1212), has spurred an extraordinary development in the study of the competition between magnetism and superconductivity. However, several points of their preparation process and characterization that determine their superconductive behavior are still obscure. The improvement of sample preparation conditions involves some thermal treatments in inert atmosphere. The first treatment results in the immediate formation of Sr2GdRuO 6. Using the CuO composition as a precursor, we produced Ru-1212. To turn it metallic and superconductor, besides the previous treatment, a final sinterization is carried out in oxygen flow for several days. Three Ru-1212 samples were produced by varying the last sinterization time (two, four, and six days under oxygen flow). Through measurements of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility and mechanical spectroscopy, it was studied the influence of the treatments under oxygen atmosphere on the structural and superconducting properties of the material.

Background - Pythiosis is a life-threatening disease caused by Pythium insidiosum. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an alternative treatment to surgery that uses the interaction of a photosensitizer, light and molecular oxygen to cause cell death. Objectives - To evaluate the effect of PDT on the in vitro growth of P. insidiosum and in an in vivo model of pythiosis. Methods - For in vitro studies, two photosensitizers were evaluated: a haematoporphyrin derivative (Photogem®) and a chlorine (Photodithazine®). AmphotericinB was also evaluated, and the control group was treated with sterile saline solution. All experiments (PDT, porphyrin, chlorine and light alone, amphotericinB and saline solution) were performed as five replicates. For in vivo studies, six rabbits were inoculated with 20,000 zoospores of P. insidiosum, and an area of 1cm3 was treated using the same sensitizers. The PDT irradiation was performed using a laser emitting at 660nm and a fluence of 200J/cm2. Rabbits were clinically evaluated daily and histopathological analysis was performed 72h after PDT. Results - For in vitro assays, inhibition rates for PDT ranged from 60 to 100% and showed better results in comparison to amphotericinB. For the in vivo assays, after PDT, histological analysis of lesions showed a lack of infection up to 1cm in depth. Conclusions and clinical importance - In vitro and in vivo studies showed that PDT was effective in the inactivation of P. insidiosum and may represent a new approach to treating pythiosis. © 2013 The Authors. Luminescent silica nanoparticles are frequently employed for biotechnology applications mainly because of their easy functionalization, photo-stability, and biocompatibility. Bifunctional silica nanoparticles (BSNPs) are described here as new efficient tools for investigating complex biological systems such as biofilms. Photoluminescence is brought about by the incorporation of a silylated ruthenium(II) complex. The surface properties of the silica particles were designed by reaction with amino-organosilanes, quaternary ammonium-organosilanes, carboxylate-organosilanes and hexamethyldisilazane. BSNPs were characterized extensively by DRIFT, 13C and 29Si solid state NMR, XPS, and photoluminescence. Zeta potential and contact angle measurements exhibited various surface properties (hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance and electric charge) according to the functional groups. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) measurements showed that the spatial distribution of these nanoparticles inside a biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 depends more on their hydrophilic/hydrophobic characteristics than on their size. CLSM observations using two nanosized particles (25 and 68 nm) suggest that narrow diffusion paths exist through the extracellular polymeric substances matrix. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
