Freshly harvested lemons [(Citrus limon (L.) Burm)] were dipped 3 min in water with and without imazalil (IMZ) at 50, 100, and 200 ppm at 50 degrees C and at 1000 ppm IMZ at 20 degrees C. Following treatments fruit were kept at 9 degrees C and 90%-95% relative humidity (RH) for 13 weeks and an additional week at 21 degrees C and ca. 75% RH, to simulate a marketing period (SMP). No decay control was observed with fruit dipped in water at 50 degrees C. In contrast, IMZ treatments provided 90%-96% control of Penicillium rots during cold storage and SMP. Fungi other than Penicillium spp. were also found in all samples as differences among treatments were negligible. IMZ treatment caused some external damage to the fruit (peel browning), and the percentage of damaged fruit was related to the amount of active ingredient (AI) present in it. Dipping in 200 or 1000 ppm IMZ promoted off-flavor development after 10 weeks of storage, and fruit were judged to be unacceptable for consumption after 13 weeks of cold storage. After 1000 ppm IMZ dipping at 20 degrees C, residue concentration in fruit was 8.20 ppm; this value doubled that found in a previous investigation on lemons treated with comparable IMZ levels. Residue concentrations in fruit after treatment at 50 degrees C was strictly related to the amount of fungicide employed. After 13 weeks Al residues in fruit decreased to average ca. 35% of the initial values. During the 1 week SMP, residue levels decreased by a further ca. 25%. It was concluded that it is possible to achieve significant control of decay in lemons during longterm storage by dipping fruit in 50 ppm IMZ mixtures at 50 degrees C. Such treatment should be advised to remarkably reduce potential pollution in the environment due to packinghouse wastewater disposal.

We define algebraically for each map germ f: Kn, 0→ Kp, 0 and for each Boardman symbol i = (il, . . ., ik) a number ci(f) which is script A sign-invariant. If f is finitely determined, this number is the generalization of the Milnor number of f when p = 1, the number of cusps of f when n = p = 2, or the number of cross caps when n = 2, p = 3. We study some properties of this number and prove that, in some particular cases, this number can be interpreted geometrically as the number of Σi points that appear in a generic deformation of f. In the last part, we compute this number in the case that the map germ is a projection and give some applications to catastrophe map germs.

Purpose: To analyze, in vitro, the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and acetic acid solutions on VX2 carcinoma cells in suspension and to examine the correlation between these effects and neoplastic cell death. Methods: The VX2 tumor cells (107 cells/ml) were incubated in solutions containing differing concentrations (2.5% and 5%) of either acetylsalicylic acid or acetic acid, or in saline solution (controls). Every five minutes, cell viability was tested (using the trypan blue test) and analyzed under light microscopy. Results: Tumor cell viability (in %) decreased progressively and, by 30 minutes, neoplastic cell death had occurred in all solutions. Conclusion: Based on this experimental model and the methodology employed, we conclude that these solutions cause neoplastic cell death in vitro.

Objectives: To evaluate the anti-erosive potential of solutions containing sodium fluoride (NaF, 225 ppm F) and different film-forming agents. Methods: In Phase 1, hydroxyapatite crystals were pre-treated with solutions containing NaF (F), linear sodium polyphosphate (LPP), sodium pyrophosphate tetrabasic (PP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STP), sodium caseinate (SC), bovine serum albumin (BSA), stannous chloride (Sn) and some combinations thereof. Deionized water was the control (C). The pH-stat method was used to evaluate hydroxyapatite dissolution. In Phase 2, the most effective solutions were tested in two independent experiments. Both consisted of an erosion-remineralization cycling model using enamel and dentine specimens with three solution treatments per day. In Phase 2a, the challenge was performed with 0.3% citric acid (pH = 3.8). In Phase 2b, 1% citric acid (pH = 2.4) was used. Hard tissue surface loss was determined profilometrically. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests. Results: In Phase 1, F, LPP, Sn and some of their combinations caused the greatest reduction in hydroxyapatite dissolution. In Phase 2a, C showed the highest enamel loss, followed by LPP. There were no differences between all other groups. In Phase 2b: (F + LPP + Sn) < (F + LPP) = (F + Sn) < (F) = (LPP + Sn) < (LPP) < (Sn) < C. For dentine, in both experiments, only the fluoride-containing groups showed lower surface loss than C, except for LPP + Sn in 2a.Conclusions: F, Sn, LPP reduced enamel erosion, this effect was enhanced by their combination under highly erosive conditions. For dentine, the F-containing groups showed similar protective effect.Clinical significance: The addition of LPP and/or Sn can improve the fluoride solution protection against erosion of enamel but not of dentine. We have previously proposed a role of hydration in the allosteric control of hemoglobin based on the effect of varying concentrations of polyols and polyethers on the human hemoglobin oxygen affinity and on the solution water activity (Colombo, M. F., Rau, D. C., and Parsegian, V. A. (1992) Science 256, 655-659). Here, the original analyses are extended to test the possibility of concomitant solute and water allosteric binding and by introducing the bulk dielectric constant as a variable in our experiments. We present data which indicate that glycine and glucose influence HbA oxygen affinity to the same extent, despite the fact that glycine increases and glucose decreases the bulk dielectric constant of the solution. Furthermore, we derive an equation linking changes in oxygen affinity to changes in differential solute and water binding to test critically the possibility of neutral solute heterotropic binding. Applied to the data, these analyses support our original interpretation that neutral solutes act indirectly on the regulation of allosteric behavior of hemoglobin by varying the chemical potential of water in solution. This leads to a displacement of the equilibrium between Hb conformational states in proportion to their differential hydration.

A cv.
