The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the osteoinductive property of autogenous demineralized dentin matrix (ADDM) on experimental surgical bone defects in the parietal bone of rabbits using the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique incorporating human amniotic membrane (HAM). Thirty-six rabbits were divided into 2 groups, HAM and ADDM+HAM. It was possible to conclude that HAM did not interfere with bone repair and was resorbed. Slices of ADDM induced direct bone formation and were incorporated by the newly formed bone tissue and remodeled. The bone defects healed faster in the ADDM+HAM group than in the group with HAM only.

The purpose of this work was to study the influence of carrageenan level (X 1) and total solids content of yogurt/whey mixture (X 2) on starter culture fermentation time, physicochetnical properties (pH, fat and total solids contents) and rheological characteristics of lactic beverages using response surface methodology. The physicochemical characteristics of the lactic beverages were similar to those of commercial products. All beverages showed non-Newtonian fluid behavior with thixotropy and yield stress. The total solids content of the lactic beverages had a greater influence on the rheological behavior of these products than the carrageenan level. Wide ranges of consistency measurements were observed by varying the stabilizer level and total solids content.

Purpose: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) slices in surgical bone defects created in the mandibles of rabbits and occluded with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane in the promotion of bone growth. Materials and Methods: Surgical bone defects were created in 36 adult rabbits and divided into 4 groups: bone defect (control), bone defect with PTFE membrane, bone defect with HDDM, and bone defect with both HDDM and a PTFE membrane (HDDM + PTFE). The rabbits were sacrificed after 30, 60, and 90 days, and the bone defects were examined histologically and by histomorphometric analysis (analysis of variance and the Tukey test). Results: The volume of newly formed bone matrix was significantly greater in the HDDM and HDDM + PTFE groups than in the control and PTFE groups. The discrete inflammatory reaction found in the HDDM and HDDM + PTFE groups did not prevent the osteopromotive activity of the dentin matrix. Discussion: HDDM slices were biocompatible and were resorbed during the bone remodeling process. They stimulated the newly formed bone until 30 days after implantation. Conclusion: Bone repair was accelerated in the bone defects treated with HDDM in comparison to the control group.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the autogenous demineralized dentin matrix (ADDM) on the third molar socket wound healing process in humans, using the guided bone regeneration technique and a polytetrafluoroethylene barrier (PTFE). Twenty-seven dental sockets were divided into three groups: dental socket (Control), dental socket with PTFE barrier (PTFE), and dental socket with ADDM slices associated to PTFE banier (ADDM + PTFE). The dental sockets were submitted to radiographic bone densitometry analysis and statistical analysis on the 15th, 30th, 60th and 90th days using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (p ≤ 0.05). The radiographic analysis of the ADDM + PTFE group showed greater homogeneity of bone radiopacity than the Control group and the PTFE group, during all the observation times. The dentin matrix gradually disappeared from the dental socket during the course of the repair process, suggesting its resorption during the bone remodeling process. It was concluded that the radiographic bone density of the dental sockets treated with ADDM was similar to that of the surrounding normal bone on the 90th day. The ADDM was biocompatible with the bone tissue of the surgical wounds of human dental sockets. The radiographic analysis revealed that the repair process was discreetly faster in the ADDM + PTFE group than in the Control and PTFE groups, although the difference was not statistically significant. In addition, the radiographic image of the ADDM + PTFE group suggested that its bone architecture was better than that of the Control and PFTE groups.

Purpose: The aim of this work was to evaluate the bone-repair process after implantation of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) slices in surgical defects created in the parietal bones of rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight rabbits were selected and divided into 4 groups of 12 rabbits: the control group, diabetic rabbits (D), diabetic rabbits with a PTFE barrier (D-PTFE), and diabetic rabbits with a PTFE barrier and with slices of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (D-PTFE+HDDM). The diabetic animals received a single dose of alloxan monohydrate (90 mg/kg) intravenously on the marginal ear vein, and their blood glucose was verified daily. The rabbits were sacrificed after 15, 30, 60, and 90 days. The histologic findings show both better bone structure and significantly greater bone density, as determined by histomorphometric analysis, for the D-PTFE + HDDM group than for the other 3 groups (P < .01). It was also observed that the mean bone density increased gradually from 15 to 90 days (except in the D-PTFE group). Conclusion: It was concluded that the HDDM was biocompatible with the bone repair of diabetic rabbits and that HDDM slices stimulated bone tissue formation. Facilitation of bone repair with HDDM could be useful in diabetic patients.

A cross-sectional microhardness (CSMH) test was carried out in human dental enamel exposed to a demineralizing solution in order to evaluate two different times of indentation in sound tissue and artificially induced caries. Twenty caries-free extracted human molars had one of their smooth surfaces sectioned and the enamel surface was isolated with nail polish except for an area of 6 mm2. These specimens were submitted to artificially induced enamel caries on a lactate buffer containing 0.1 ppm fluoride (F) during 28 days. All specimens were bisected to create groups A and B in which CSMH test was performed employing a Knoop indenter with a 25g load for 5 or 10 s, respectively. Student's paired t-test (p<0.05) was used to determine statistically significant differences between group A and B in 7 depths. There were no significant differences between any of the analyzed depths. Since the present experiment showed no significant difference when comparing indentations made with a 25 g load during either 5 or 10 s in different depths, this method can be used with either one of the time intervals tested without compromising a CSMH test on artificially demineralized human enamel.

This research evaluated the bone repair process after implantation of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) in surgical defects in the parietal bone of rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes, using a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFe) barrier for guided bone regeneration. Thirty-six rabbits were used and divided into four groups: control (C, n = 12), diabetic (D, n = 12, left parietal bone), diabetic with PTFe (DPTFe, same 12 rabbits, right parietal bone), and diabetic with PTFe associated to HDDM (D-PTFe+HDDM, n = 12). Bone defects were created in the parietal bone of the rabbits and the experimental treatments were performed, where applicable. The rabbits were sacrificed after 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. The bone defects were examined radiographically and by optical density (ANOVA and Tukey test, p < .05). The radiographic findings showed that the D-PTFe+HDDM group presented greater radiopacity and better trabecular bone arrangement when compared to that of the C, D and D-PTFe groups. The statistical analysis showed significant differences in the optical density of the newly formed bone among the studied groups. It was possible to conclude that HDDM was biocompatible in diabetic rabbits.

Our objective was to investigate the effects of rehydration with acid whey or water at three moisture levels, as well as the effects of bacterial inoculation, on the fermentation, chemical composition and aerobic stability of corn grain silages. The trial was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates in a factorial arrangement as follows: 3 (rehydration with three different moisture levels: 300,350 and 400 mL/kg of corn grain)x 2 (silage inoculated with bacteria or not inoculated (control))x 2 (liquid used in the rehydration: acid whey or water). Overall, corn grain silages rehydrated with acid whey produced more lactic acid than the silages rehydrated with water (13.8 vs. 12.6 g/kg of dry matter (DM), respectively). In addition, increases in the rehydration of corn grain silages promoted decreases (linear) in lactic acid concentration as well as in production of total acids. Although inoculated silages had higher pH as consequence of the rehydration using water at the three levels, these treatments presented high DM recovery. In general, neutral detergent fiber (aNDFom) decreased if inoculant was applied in corn grain silages rehydrated with acid whey. After silos opening, silages rehydrated with 350 or 400 mL/kg (independent of the liquid) had lower aerobic stability than silages rehydrated with 300 mL/kg. Overall, we found that the inoculant did not promote significant changes in the composition of the corn grain silage. In contrast, the potential of the use of acid whey in ensiling corn grain is high, as its addition leads to improvements in the fermentation process and aerobic stability of the silages. The bioavailability of amino adds from milk whey protein hydrolysates was evaluated using diffusion of the substances through semi-permeable membranes (dialyzability) and transport by Caco-2 cell cultures. The hydrolysates with low degree of hydrolysis (LDH) and high degree of hydrolysis (HDH) were obtained after 120 min of reaction time at 50 degrees C after the initial addition of pepsin, followed by the addition of trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase-A. The proteins and hydrolysates were further subjected to in vitro digestion with pepsin plus pancreatin. HPLC was used to determine the concentrations of dialyzable amino adds (48.4% of the non-hydrolyzed proteins, 63.2% of the LDH sample and 58.3% of the HDH sample), demonstrating the greater dialyzability of the hydrolysates. The LDH and HDH whey protein hydrolysates prepared with pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase-A showed only 14.7% and 20.8% of dialyzable small peptides and amino acids, respectively. The efficiency of absorption was demonstrated by the preferential transport of Ile, Lou and Arg through a layer of cells. In the LDH hydrolysate, Tyr was also transported. Prior high- and low-degree hydrolysis of the whey provided transport by 5.7% and 6.6%, respectively, in comparison with 23% for non-hydrolyzed proteins, considering the total amount of these amino adds that was applied to the cells.
