The degradation behaviour of SnO(2)-based varistors (SCNCr) due to current pulses (8/20 mu s) is reported here for the first time in comparison with the ZnO-based commercial varistors (ZnO). Puncturing and/or cracking failures were observed in ZnO-based varistors possessing inferior thermo-mechanical properties in comparison with that found in a SCNCr system free of failures. Both systems presented electric degradation related to the increase in the leakage current and decrease in the electric breakdown field, non-linear coefficient and average value of the potential barrier height. However, it was found that a more severe degradation occurred in the ZnO-based varistors concerning their non-ohmic behaviour, while in the SCNCr system, a strong non-ohmic behaviour remained after the degradation. These results indicate that the degradation in the metal oxide varistors is controlled by a defect diffusion process whose rate depends on the mobility, the concentration of meta-stable defects and the amount of electrically active interfaces. The improved behaviour of the SCNCr system is then inferred to be associated with the higher amount of electrically active interfaces (85%) and to a higher energy necessary to activate the diffusion of the specific defects.

This paper describes an alternative procedure to obtain an equivalent conductor from a bundled conductor, taking into account the distribution of the current in subcondutors of the bundle. Firstly, it is introduced a brief background about the concept of Geometric Mean Radius (GMR) and how this methodology is applied to define an equivalent conductor and its electric parameters. Emphasizing that the classical procedure, using GMR, is limited to premise which the current is equally distributed through subconductors. Afterwards, it is described the development of proposed method and applications for an equivalent conductor obtained from a conventional transmission line bundled conductor and from an equivalent conductor based on a bundle with compressed SF(6) insulation system, where the current is unequally distributed through subconductors.

Several studies have assessed the morphology and thickness of hybrid layer, the dentin bend strengths as well as sealing ability of dentin adhesive systems. However, few in vivo studies have evaluated the biocompatibility of the adhesive systems following application to deep dentin or directly to the pulp of human teeth. Many studies performed in non-human primate teeth or teeth of rats have reported pulp healing and dentin bridging following pulp capping with bonding agents. In addition, a few clinical and radiographical reports of the success of resin pulp capping have been described in the dental literature. Objectives: the aim of this review was to evaluate the literature on pulp responses following total acid etching and application of adhesive resins on deep cavities or pulp exposures. In addition, the clinical/radiographical evidence for the apparent success of vital pulp therapy and results obtained from animal and human studies were compared and discussed.Significance and conclusions: the self-etching adhesive systems may be useful and safe when applied on dentin, In contrast, persistent inflammatory reactions as well as delay in pulpal healing and failure of dentin bridging were seen in human pulps capped with bonding agents. The results observed in animal teeth cannot be directly extrapolated to human clinical conditions. Consequently, vital pulp therapy using acidic agents and adhesive resins seems to be contraindicated. (C) 2000 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present paper we consider the vortex lattice properties of a square superconductor such as the vortex patterns, the Gibbs free energy, the magnetization, and the depairing critical current density. We show that this last quantity shows a matching effect, that is, it shows a discontinuous behavior as a function of the applied magnetic field.

The phenomenon of electrical degradation in ZnO varistors was studied by application of high-intensity current pulses. A wave shape of 8 X 20-mu-s and rectangular waves of 1 and 2 ms were used. The degradation was estimated by reference electric-field variation and by Schottky voltage barrier deformation. The results showed that current pulses reduce both the height and the width of the barrier voltage. It was also observed that the donor density N(d) did not change but the surface states density N(s) decreased with degradation.

BaBi2Ta2O9 thin films having a layered structure were fabricated by metalorganic solution deposition technique. The films exhibited good structural, dielectric, and insulating properties. The room temperature resistivity was found to be in the range of 10(12)-10(14) Omega cm up to 4 V corresponding to a field of 200 kV/cm across the capacitor for films annealed in the temperature range of 500-700 degrees C. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics as a function of thickness for films annealed at 700 degrees C for 1 h, indicated bulk limited conduction and the log(I) vs V-1/2 characteristics suggested a space-charge-limited conduction mechanism. The capacitance-voltage measurements on films in a metal-insulator-semiconductor configuration indicated good Si/BaBi2Ta2O9 interface characteristics and a SiO2 thickness of similar to 5 nm was measured and calculated. High critical temperature superconductors are evolving from a scientific research subject into large-scale application devices. In order to meet this development demand they must withstand high current capacity under mechanical loads arising from thermal contraction during cooling from room temperature down to operating temperature (usually 77 K) and due to the electromagnetic forces generated by the current and the induced magnetic field. Among the HTS materials, the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox, compound imbedded in an Ag/AgMg sheath has shown the best results in terms of critical current at 77 K and tolerance against mechanical strain. Aiming to evaluate the influence of thermal stress induced by a number of thermal shock cycles we have evaluated the V-I characteristic curves of samples mounted onto semicircular holders with different curvature radius (9.75 to 44.5 mm). The most deformed sample (epsilon = 1.08%) showed the largest reduction of critical current (40%) compared to the undeformed sample and the highest sensitivity to thermal stress (I-c/I-c0 = 0.5). The V-I characteristic curves were also fitted by a potential curve displaying n-exponents varying from 20 down to 10 between the initial and last thermal shock cycle.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effector molecules of innate immune systems found in different groups of organisms, including microorganisms, plants, insects, amphibians and humans. These peptides exhibit several structural motifs but the most abundant AMPs assume an amphipathic alpha-helical structure. The alpha-helix forming antimicrobial peptides are excellent candidates for protein engineering leading to an optimization of their biological activity and target specificity. Nowadays several approaches are available and this review deals with the use of combinatorial synthesis and directed evolution in order to provide a high-throughput source of antimicrobial peptides analogues with enhanced lytic activity and specificity.

We report for the first time the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) spectrum for a direct band-gap AlGaAs sample, where the presence of DX centers is clearly observed by photoconductivity measurements. A TSDC band is obtained, revealing the presence of dipoles, which could be attributed to DX--d+ pairs as indeed predicted by O'Reilly [Appl. Phys. Lett. 55, 1409 (1989)]. The data are fitted by relaxation time distribution approach yielding an average activation energy of 0.108 eV. This is the most striking feature of our data, since this energy has approximately the same value of the DX center binding energy.

This article reports systematic results of corona poling measurements obtained on biaxially stretched polyvinylidene fluoride films charged in dry air. Charging was performed using the constant current corona triode. The dependence of the poling process on the sample thickness, charging current, and successive charging processes was investigated. Phase transitions from alpha to delta and to beta phases were observed when virgin samples were corona charged. The thermal pulse technique showed that the polarization profiles during charging can be made consistently almost uniform and that the ferroelectric reorientation can be associated with the rising plateau region displayed on potential buildup curves.
