A range of low melting salts of the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSA) anion with hindered organic cations (N-methyl-1-methylpyrrolinium, N,N-dimethylpyrrolidinium, N,N,N,-trimethylammonium, and N,N,N,N-tetrakis(n-propyl)ammonium) have been crystallized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data show these materials to consist of discrete ions with only weak C−H···O (or for Me3NH N−H···O) contacts between the constituent atoms of the cations and anions close to the limits of van der Waals separations. Consequently, the observed physical properties of these materials presumably result from the diffuse negative charge on the TFSA anion and inefficient packing of these large and irregularly shaped ions.

Surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectra of manganese (III) tetraphenylporphine chloride (Mn(TPP)Cl) on metal island films were measured in transmission mode. Dependences of the enhancement factor of SEIRA on both the sample quantity and the type of evaporated metal were investigated by subsequently increasing the amount of Mn(TPP)Cl on gold and silver substrates. The enhancement increases nonlinearly with the amount of sample and varies slightly with the thickness of metal islands. In particular, the SEIRA transmission method presents an anomalous spectral enhancement by a factor of 579, with substantial spectral shifts, observed only for the physisorbed Mn(TPP)Cl that remained on a 3-nm-thick gold film after immersion of the substrates into acetone. A charge-transfer (CT) interaction between the porphyrinic Mn and gold islands is therefore proposed as an additional factor in the SEIRA mechanism of the porphyrin system. The number of remaining porphyrin molecules was estimated by calibration-based fluorescence spectroscopy to be 2.36×1013 molecules (i.e., ~2.910-11 mol/cm2) for a 3-nm-thick gold film, suggesting that the physisorbed molecules distributed very loosely on the metal island surface as a result of the weak van der Waals interactions. Fluorescence microscopy revealed the formation of microcrystalline porphyrin aggregates during the consecutive increase in sample solution. However, the immersion likely redistributed the porphyrin to be directly attached on the gold surface, as evidenced by an absence of porphyrinic microcrystals and the observed SEIRA enhancement. The distinctive red shift in the UV-visible spectra and the SEIRA-enhanced peaks indicate the presence of a preferred orientation in the form of the porphyrin ring inclined with respect to the gold surface.

Direct measurements of the force between two molecularly smooth mica sheets immersed in cyclohexane show not a monotonic van der Waals attraction, but an oscillatory function of distance, where the spacing between successive minima corresponds to the molecular diameter of cyclohexane. As surface separation increases the oscillations become less pronounced, and beyond 5 nm (typically seven or eight oscillations) they are no longer detected. These results accord with theoretical ideas on structural forces resulting from the inhomogeneous arrangement of molecules of the liquid near the solid surface. In n-octane the force law does not show the same pronounced oscillations, except at very small separations where repulsive barriers are found. These are attributed to the difficulty of removing the last layers of adsorbed molecules of the liquid from the mica surfaces, and they reduce the mice-mica adhesion significantly. Small amounts of water in the hydrocarbon liquids condense to form a bridge between the surfaces at small separations, causing a very strong adhesion between them. Some implications of these results for the stability of colloids in organic media are discussed.

The plausibility of the entropic repulsion of electrical double layers acting to stabilize an equilibrium thickness of intergranular glass films in polycrystalline ceramics is explored. Estimates of the screening length, surface potential, and surface charge required to provide a repulsive force sufficiently large to balance the attractive van der Waals and capillary forces for observable thicknesses of intergranular film are calculated and do not appear to be beyond possibility. However, it has yet to be established whether crystalline particles in a liquid-phase sintering medium possess an electrical double layer at high temperatures. If they do, such a surface charge layer may well have important consequences not only for liquid-phase sintering but also for high-frequency electrical properties and microwave sintering of ceramics containing a liquid phase.

An atomic force microscope was used to measure the forces acting between two polystyrene latex spheres in aqueous media. The results show an electrostatic repulsion at large separations which is overtaken by an attractive “hook” that pulls the two spheres into contact from a considerable range (20−400 nm), much larger than could be expected for a van der Waals attraction. The range of operation of this attraction varies from one experiment to another and is not correlated with electrolyte concentration. However, the range is found to decrease significantly when the level of dissolved gas in the water is reduced.

Measurements are presented of the electrical double layer and van der Waals forces between the (0001) surfaces of two single-crystal sapphire platelets immersed in an aqueous solution of NaCl at pH values from 6.7 to 11. The results fit the standard Deryaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, with a Hamaker constant of 6.7 × 10−20 J. These are the first measurements made using the Israelachvili surface forces apparatus without mica as a substrate material, and they demonstrate the possibility of using this technique to explore the surface chemistry of a wider range of materials.

We study theoretically the dynamics of film thinning under the action of an attractive surface force near the point of a jump instability. Our approach is illustrated by modeling van der Waals and hydrophobic attractive forces. The main result is that with the hydrophobic force law reported previously it is often impossible to establish the jump separation with any certainty. The surfaces instead approach slowly from a distance which is much larger than the point where an actual jump is expected. We conclude that an attractive force measured by the static jump technique is overestimated, and we formulate principles of a new dynamic jump method. The use of this new technique would permit direct measurements of attractive forces at separations below the static jump distance down to contact of the surfaces.

In this work, an atmospheric pressure glow discharge helium plasma treatment was employed to modify the surface properties of jute fibres. The resulting bio-composites showed an increase in flexural properties and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) compared to composites produced using untreated jute fibres. To understand the reason behind the ILSS improvement, the acid–base properties of jute fibres were determined by contact angle analysis using the capillary rise method. The results were fitted further to van Oss–Chaudhury–Good (vOCG) and Chang–Qin–Chen (CQC) models to determine the Lifshitz–van der Waals (LW) and acid–base components of surface energy. Surface energy determined by the vOCG model revealed that plasma treatment of jute fibre resulted in a 22% increase in total surface energy, a 19% increase in the LW component and a 24% increase in the acid–base component of surface energy. The increase in the acid–base component is due to the significant increase (69%) in the electron-accepting (γ+S) parameter. On the other hand, the CQC model clearly indicates an amphoteric nature of the fibre surface based on opposite signs of the acid and base principal values (PSa and PSb). Overall, the results indicated that increases in both LW and acid–base components were responsible for improvement in the properties of the composites.

The first surface force measurements under electrochemical potential control between a metal and a ceramic surface across a liquid medium (water) are reported. Our experiments also investigate and reveal how increasing levels of surface roughness and dissimilarity between the potentials of the interacting surfaces influence the strength and range of electric double layer, van der Waals, hydration, and steric forces and how this contributes to deviations from DLVO theory at small distances within aqueous solution.

The surface forces apparatus (SFA) has been used for many years to measure the physical forces between surfaces, such as van der Waals (including Casimir) and electrostatic forces in vapors and liquids, adhesion and capillary forces, forces due to surface and liquid structure (e.g. solvation and hydration forces), polymer, steric and hydrophobic interactions, bio-specific interactions as well as friction and lubrication forces. Here we describe recent developments in the SFA technique, specifically the SFA 2000, its simplicity of operation and its extension into new areas of measurement of both static and dynamic forces as well as both normal and lateral (shear and friction) forces. The main reason for the greater simplicity of the SFA 2000 is that it operates on one central simple-cantilever spring to generate both coarse and fine motions over a total range of seven orders of magnitude (from millimeters to ångstroms). In addition, the SFA 2000 is more spacious and modulated so that new attachments and extra parts can easily be fitted for performing more extended types of experiments (e.g. extended strain friction experiments and higher rate dynamic experiments) as well as traditionally non-SFA type experiments (e.g. scanning probe microscopy and atomic force microscopy) and for studying different types of systems.

Two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanosheets are excellent dielectric substrate for graphene, molybdenum disulfide, and many other 2D nanomaterial-based electronic and photonic devices. To optimize the performance of these 2D devices, it is essential to understand the dielectric screening properties of BN nanosheets as a function of the thickness. Here, electric force microscopy along with theoretical calculations based on both state-of-the-art first-principles calculations with van der Waals interactions under consideration, and nonlinear Thomas-Fermi theory models are used to investigate the dielectric screening in high-quality BN nanosheets of different thicknesses. It is found that atomically thin BN nanosheets are less effective in electric field screening, but the screening capability of BN shows a relatively weak dependence on the layer thickness.

Silk particles of different sizes and shapes were produced by milling and interactions with a series of polar and non-polar gaseous probes were investigated using an inverse gas chromatography technique. The surface energy of all silk materials is mostly determined by long range dispersive interactions such as van der Waals forces. The surface energy increases and surface energy heterogeneity widens after milling. All samples have amphoteric surfaces and the concentration of acidic groups increases after milling while the surfaces remain predominantly basic. We also examined powder compression and flow behaviours using a rheometer. Increase in surface energy, surface area, and static charges in sub-micron air jet milled particles contributed to their aggregation and therefore improved flowability. However they collapse under large pressures and form highly cohesive powder. Alkaline hydrolysis resulted in more crystalline fibres which on milling produced particles with higher density, lower surface energy and improved flowability. The compressibility, bulk density and cohesion of the powders depend on the surface energy as well as on particle size, surface area, aggregation state and the testing conditions, notably the consolidated and unconsolidated states. The study has helped in understanding how surface energy and flowability of particles can be changed via different fabrication approaches.

Adsorption of target molecules on the immobilized microcantilever surface produced beam displacement due to the differential surface stress generated between the immobilized and non-immobilized surface. Surface stress is caused by the intermolecular forces between the molecules. Van der Waals, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effect and steric hindrance are some of the intermolecular forces involved. A theoretical framework describing the adsorption-induced microcantilever displacement is derived in this paper. Experimental displacement of thrombin aptamer-thrombin interactions was carried out. The relation between the electrostatic interactions involved between adsorbates (thrombin) as well as adsorbates and substrates (thrombin aptamer) and the microcantilever beam displacement utilizing the proposed mathematical model was quantified and compared to the experimental value. This exercise is important to aid the designers in microcantilever sensing performance optimization.

With the increasing interest in two-dimensional van der Waals materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as a promising material for electronic and energy storage devices. It suffers from poor cycling stability and low rate capability when used as an anode in lithium ion batteries. Here, N-doped MoS2 nanosheets with 2-8 atomic layers, increased interlayer distance, mesoporous structure and high surface area synthesised by a simple sol-gel method show an enhanced lithium storage performance, delivering a high reversible capacity (998.0 mA h g-1, 50 mA g-1), high rate performance (610 mA h g-1, 2 A g-1), and excellent cycling stability. The excellent lithium storage performance of the MoS2 nanosheets might be due to the better electrical and ionic conductivity and improved lithium ion diffusion which are related to their structural characteristics and high concentration N doping. The possible mechanism of the improved performance is proposed and discussed.

This study examines intermolecular interactions of a monolayer of octadecanol (CH(3)(CH(2))(17)OH) on water as a function of surface density and temperature, using classical molecular dynamics simulations. We observe increased interaction between the alkyl chains (van der Waals) and hydroxyl groups (H-bonding) with increased surface density, which leads to increased order and packing within the monolayer. We also identified clear trends in the intermolecular interactions, ordering and packing of the monolayer molecules as a function of temperature. The observed trends can be closely related to features of the current empirical theories of evaporation resistance.
