Työn tavoitteena on luoda yleinen informaatioinfrastruktuuri autoteollisuuden valmistuskustannusten arviointiin. Nykyään tämä kustannusarviointi on laajassa käytössä oleva menetelmä. Se mahdollistaa tuotekustannusten hallitsemisen, mikä lisää autovalmistajien kilpailukykyä. Kustannusarvioinnissa tarvitaan laadukasta tietoa, mutta suoritetussa tutkimuksessa paljastui, että useat seikat haittaavat tätä arviointia. Erityisesti resurssien vähyys, tiedonhankinta ja tiedon luotettavuuden varmentaminen aiheuttavat ongelmia. Nämä seikat ovat johtaneet kokemusperäisen asiantuntemuksen laajaan käyttöön, minkä johdosta erityisesti kokemattomilla kustannusarvioijilla on vaikeuksia ymmärtää kustannusarvioiden tietovaatimuksia. Tämän johdosta tutkimus tuo esiin kokeneiden kustannusarvioijien käyttämiä tietoja ja tietolähteitä päämääränä lisätä kustannusarvioiden ymmärtämistä. Informaatioinfrastruktuuri, joka sisältää tarvittavan tiedon järkevien ja luotettavien kustannusarvioiden luontiin, perustuu tutkimuksen tuloksiin. Infrastruktuuri määrittelee tarvittavan kustannustiedon ja niiden mahdolliset tietolähteet. Lisäksi se selvittää miksi tieto on tarpeellista ja miten tiedon oikeellisuus pitäisi varmentaa. Infrastruktuuria käytetään yhdessä yleisen kustannusarvioprosessimallin kanssa. Tämä integrointi johtaa tarkempiin ja selkeämpiin kustannusarvioihin autoteollisuudessa.

Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli määrittää uuden markkinan valinnan perusteita teolliselle tuotteelle. Tutkielma keskittyi jo tunnettuihin kansainvälisen markkinavalinnan lähestymistapoihin ja pyrki soveltamaan yhtä menetelmää käytäntöön tutkielman empiria osassa case-tutkimuksen avulla. Tutkimusote oli tutkiva, eksploratiivinen ja perustui sekundääri analyysiin. Käytetyt tiedon lähteet olivat suureksi osin sekundäärisiä tuottaen kvalitatiivista tietoa. Kuitenkin haastatteluita suoritettiin myös. Kattava kirjallisuus katsaus tunnetuista teoreettisista lähestymistavoista kansainväliseen markkinavalintaan oli osa tutkielmaa. Kolme tärkeintä lähestymistapaa esiteltiin tarkemmin. Yksi lähestymistavoista, ei-järjestelmällinen, muodosti viitekehyksen tutkielman empiria-osalle. Empiria pyrki soveltamaan yhtä ei-järjestelmällisen lähestymistavan malleista kansainvälisessä paperiteollisuudessa. Tarkoituksena oli tunnistaa kaikkein houkuttelevimmat maat mahdollisille markkinointitoimenpiteille tuotteen yhdellä loppukäyttöalueella. Tutkielmassa päädyttiin käyttämään ilmastollisia olosuhteita, siipikarjan päälukua sekä siipikarjan kasvuprosenttia suodattimina pyrittäessä vähentämään mahdollisten maiden lukumäärää. Tutkielman empiria-osa kärsi selkeästi relevantin tiedon puutteesta. Siten myös tutkielman reliabiliteetti ja validiteetti voidaan jossain määrin kyseenalaistaa.

This study is a part of the Ecologically Friendly Port Ust-Luga (EFP) project. The purpose of this study is to examine the environmental status of the Finnish ports and, more specifically, the Port of HaminaKotka. An analysis of the environmental status is performed mainly as a literature review, because the Finnish ports must comply with Finnish and EU legislation and with the binding international regulations and conventions created by different organizations. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has done groundbreaking work in the field of maritime safety and maritime environmental protection. The MARPOL convention has a great impact on decreasing pollution from international shipping and it applies to 99% of the world’s merchant tonnage. Pollution prevention covers: Oil pollution, Chemical pollution, Air pollution and GHG Emissions, Dumping of Wasted and Other Matters, Garbage, Sewage, Port Reception Facilities, Special Areas under MARPOL and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas. There is also Pollution Prevention for other treaties like anti-fouling systems used on ships, the transfer of alien species by ships’ ballast water and the environmentally sound recycling of ships. There are more than twenty different EU and international regulations that influence ports and port operations in Finland. In addition, there is also national legislation that has an effect on Finnish ports. For the most part, the legislation for ports is common in the EU area, but the biggest and most important difference between the legislation in Finland and other EU countries is due to the Act on Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure. The Act states that the environmental impact assessment procedure shall be applied to projects that may have significant adverse environmental impacts, due to the special features of Finland`s nature and environment. In this Act, the term environmental impact refers to the direct and indirect effects inside and outside Finnish territory of a project or operations on human health, living conditions and amenity; soil, water, air, climate, organisms, interaction between them and biodiversity; community structure, buildings, landscape, townscape and cultural heritage; utilization of natural resources. In Finland, the Environmental Permit requires that ports collect all necessary information concerning environmental effects and make required reports to the Finnish authorities, stakeholders and the public. Commonly, environmental reporting is public and environmental achievements are emphasized in reporting and in media. At the moment, the problem in environmental reporting is that it’s difficult to compare data from different ports. There is enough data concerning the environmental effects and performance, but the manner of reporting and the quality of the data varies between ports. There are differences in the units and codes used, in some cases the information is not sufficient and it can even be rather unreliable. There are also differences regarding the subjects that are emphasized in reporting.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata suomalaisen PK-yrityksen kasvamista globaa- liksi toimijaksi. Tapahtunut kasvu on tarkoittanut case-yrityksen kohdalla liike- vaihdon ja henkilöstömäärän kasvun lisäksi myös toimipaikkojen määrän kasvua ja organisaatiorakenteen monimutkaistumista. Näiden muutosten perusteella ja ta- pahtuneiden muutoskohtien avulla on löydettävissä yrityksen toimintaa kuvaavia vaiheita, joita ovat alkuvaihe, kasvuvaihe ja kypsä vaihe. Näiden vaiheiden jälkeen tulee vielä neljäs vaihe, eli uusiutumisvaihe tai laskeva vaihe. Tämän neljännen vaiheen suunta riippuu yrityksen kyvystä uusiutua ja kehittyä vastaamaan uusiin tuleviin haasteisiin joita aikaisempaa globaalimpi toiminta tuo tullessaan. Tapahtuneilla muutoksilla on ollut myös vaikutusta tietohallintoon. Tämä tieto- hallinnossa tapahtunut muutos onkin tämän tutkimuksen ydin, eli mitä haasteita ja vaatimuksia Trafotekin tietohallinto on kohdannut toiminnan eri vaiheissa, ja onko tietohallinto pystynyt omalta osaltaan vastaamaan näihin vaatimuksiin. Toiminnan alkuvaiheessa tietotekniikalla ei ollut suurtakaan strategista ja liike- toimintaa tukevaa roolia, ja tietohallinto pystyikin vastaamaan liiketoiminnan vaa- timuksiin. Tässä vaiheessa Trafotekissa ei ollut erillistä tietohallintoa, vaan tieto- tekniset työt hoidettiin muiden työtehtävien ohessa. Tietotekniset tehtävät olivat lähinnä tukitoimintoihin liittyviä tehtäviä. Kasvuvaiheessa tietotekniikan merkitys kasvoi, ja Trafotekiin tuli tarvetta luoda erillinen tietotekninen työtehtävä. Tässä toiminnan vaiheessa kyvykkyydet ja kypsyys eivät kuitenkaan kehittyneet halu- tulla tavalla, sillä kaikki käytössä oleva resursointi käytettiin edelleen päivittäisiin tukitoimintoihin, kehittämisen sijaan. Sama kehittymättömyys vaivasi toiminnan kypsässä vaiheessa. Tässä vaiheessa toki alettiin jo ymmärtää, että tietohallinnolla on strateginen rooli, joka tukee liiketoimintaa sen tavoitteiden saavuttamisessa. Tehty tutkimus tukee näkemystä siitä, että myös tietohallinnon kehittäminen on kokonaisvaltaista kehittämistä, jossa pitää huomioida toimintaa tukevia kyvyk- kyyksiä kaikissa toiminnan vaiheissa. Yrityksen kasvaessa myös tietohallinnon tu- lee kasvaa ja kehittyä. Osa tämän tutkimuksen tapahtumista oli tapahtunut ennen tämän tutkimustyön varsinaista aloittamista, eli ne kuvataan ja selitetään jälkijättöisesti. Kyseessä on toimintatutkimus, joka ajoittuu vuosiin 1996–2014. International accounting standards will be applied from the1st of January 2005 in accounting of member states of the EU with a view of harmonizing the accounting practices in Europe, and on the long term even more widely. The purpose of adopting IAS accounting standards is to make the financial statements and financial information received from companies more comparable and more transparent for investors and other interest groups. IAS 17 introduces the treatment of a lease agreement in the light of the new accounting standards. Finnish companies have used finance leases widely as an alternative, off-balance sheet form of financing capital investments consistently with Finnish GAAP. Along with the appliance of IAS 17 the off-balance-sheet financing possibility of leases classified as finance leases will no longer exist. IAS 17 states that finance leases are going to be recognized in the balance sheet as both assets, in form of fixed assets, and loans in liabilities classified as long and short term loans. IAS 17 will make two major changes to the income statement. Firstly, the lease payments formerly treated as variable costs are moved below the operating profit level to finance costs. Secondly, the depreciations from the leased assets are also introduced. The effects to the case company's, Fortum Shipping's, income statement and balance sheet are remarkable. Along with the appliance of IAS Fortum Shipping's net assets are somewhat going to be doubled, the amount of liabilities increases significantly and the earnings before interests and taxes increases moderately. The preceding factors have a big effect on the case company's financial key figures. So, the IAS originated effects on balance sheet and income statement have essential impacts on a company's key financial indicators. Most significant changes can be found in key ratios measuring profitability, capital structure, and efficiency. This means that when comparing the IAS calculated profits of companies with the profits calculated prior with Finnish GAAP, the analysis should be made with prudence because the figures are not comparable on straight-forward basis.

The main objective of this study is to assess the potential of the information technology industry in the Saint Petersburg area to become one of the new key industries in the Russian economy. To achieve this objective, the study analyzes especially the international competitiveness of the industry and the conditions for clustering. Russia is currently heavily dependent on its natural resources, which are the main source of its recent economic growth. In order to achieve good long-term economic performance, Russia needs diversification in its well-performing industries in addition to the ones operating in the field of natural resources. The Russian government has acknowledged this and started special initiatives to promote such other industries as information technology and nanotechnology. An interesting industry that is basically less than 20 years old and fast growing in Russia, is information technology. Information technology activities and markets are mainly concentrated in Russia’s two biggest cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and areas around them. The information technology industry in the Saint Petersburg area, although smaller than Moscow, is especially dynamic and is gaining increasing foreign company presence. However, the industry is not yet internationally competitive as it lacks substantial and sustainable competitive advantages. The industry is also merely a potential global information technology cluster, as it lacks the competitive edge and a wide supplier and manufacturing base and other related parts of the whole information technology value system. Alone, the industry will not become a key industry in Russia, but it will, on the other hand, have an important supporting role for the development of other industries. The information technology market in the Saint Petersburg area is already large and if more tightly integrated to Moscow, they will together form a huge and still growing market sufficient for most companies operating in Russia currently and in the future. Therefore, the potential of information technology inside Russia is immense.

The objectives of this thesis areto identify the best elements from Information Technology Infrastructure Library financial management for an international company. The elements need to be customized to fit existing elements and the thesis needs to provide implementation proposal. The new IT financial management needs to improve cost visibility and bring benefits to the company. In order to find the best elements for IT financial management, there needs to be a research to discover the companys business needs. The ITIL library is used to find answers and solutions to the companys issues in IT financial management. Other IT frameworks can and will be used as well, if they are able to work with ITIL model. ITIL consists from budgeting, accounting and charging in IT financial management, which all needs to be investigated. In addition more ITIL elements such as contract management and supplier management can be used, in order to make IT financial management work better.

Education in Finland plays a significant role. International students are becoming an essential part of Finnish Educational system. The study was meant to examine their expectations and experiences in a Finnish University. As a case, Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) was chosen and, in particular, Information Technology (IT) Department. The main objectives of the study were to examine students’ satisfaction of their study experiences, their evaluation of the teaching quality of courses and last but not least the cultural impact on those. Data for the study were mainly collected with the help of three Internet surveys from a sample of 50 students – currently studying at LUT or already graduated. Response rate from questionnaire to questionnaire varied, however, still close to average and was considered as good and relevant enough. The study was initially meant as qualitative, however, a number of quantitative data analysis methods were used as well. Most of students’ expectations appear to become true, majority of students are satisfied with their experiences. Results show that teaching quality in LUT is evaluated as ‘good’. Nevertheless, students prefer particular courses to the other ones. In conclusion, it can be said that culture does affect students’ expectations, experiences, perception of the world, however, cultural differences do not cause any serious problems.

Incident and near miss reporting is one of the proactive tools of safety management. By analyzing incidents and near misses and by corrective actions, severe accidents can potentially be avoided. Near miss and incident reporting is widely used in many riskprone industries such as aviation or chemical industry. In shipping incident and near miss reporting is required by the mandatory safety management system International Safety Management Code (ISM Code). However, in several studies the conclusion has been that incidents are reported poorly in the shipping industry. The aim of this report is to highlight the best practices for incident reporting in shipping and to support the shipping industry in the better utilization of incident reporting information. The study consists of three parts: 1) voluntary, shared reporting systems in shipping (international experiences), 2) interview study at four shipping companies in Sweden and in Finland (best practices), 3) expert workshop on incident reporting (problems and solutions). Preconditions for a functional reporting system are an existing no blame culture, commitment of the top management, feedback, good communication, training and an easy-to-use system. Although preconditions are met, problems can still appear, for example due to psychological, interpersonal or nationality-related reasons. In order to keep the reporting system functioning, the shipping company must be committed to maintain and develop the system and to tackle the problems. The whole reporting process from compiling, handling and analyzing a report, creating corrective actions and implementing them has to be handled properly in order to gain benefits from the reporting system. In addition to avoiding accidents, the functional reporting system can also offer other benefits by increasing safety awareness, by improving the overall safety and working conditions onboard, by enhancing team work and communication onboard and between ships and the land-based organization of shipping companies. Voluntary shared reporting systems are supported in the shipping industry in principle, but their development in the Baltic Sea is still in its infancy and the potential benefits of sharing the reports have not been realized. On the basis of this study we recommend that a common reporting system be developed for the Baltic Sea area which all the ships operating in the area could use regardless of their flag. Such a wider system could prevent some of the problems related to the current national systems. There would be more incident cases available in the database and this would support anonymity and thus encourage shipping companies to report to a shared database more frequently. A shared reporting system would contribute to the sharing of experiences and to the wider use of incident information in the shipping industry.

Bottom of the pyramid (BoP) markets are an underserved market of approximately four billion people living on under $5 a day in four regional areas: Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. According to estimations, the BoP market forms a $5 trillion global consumer market. Despite the potential of BoP markets, companies have traditionally focused on serving the markets of developed countries and ignored the large customer group at the bottom of the pyramid. The BoP approach as first developed by Prahalad and Hart in 2002 has focused on multinational corporations (MNCs), which were thought of as the ones who should take responsibility in serving the customers at the bottom of the pyramid. This study challenges this proposition and gives evidence that also smaller international new ventures – entrepreneurial firms that are international from their birth, can be successful in BoP markets. BoP markets are characterized by a number of deficiencies in the institutional environment such as strong reliance on informal sector, lack of infrastructure and lack of skilled labor. The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of international entrepreneurship in BoP markets by analyzing how international new ventures overcome institutional constraints in BoP markets and how institutional uncertainty can be exploited by solving institutional problems. The main objective is divided into four sub objectives. • To describe the opportunities and challenges BoP markets present • To analyze the internationalization of INVs to BoP markets • To examine what kinds of strategies international entrepreneurs use to overcome institutional constraints • To explore the opportunities institutional uncertainty offers for INVs Qualitative approach was used to conduct this study and multiple-case study was chosen as a research strategy in order to allow cross-case analysis. The empirical data was collected through four interviews with the companies Fuzu, Mifuko, Palmroth Consulting and Sibesonke. The results indicated that understanding of the wider institutional environment improves the survival prospects of INVs in BoP markets and that it is indeed possible to exploit institutional uncertainty by solving institutional problems. The main findings were that first-hand experience of the markets and grassroots levels of information are the best assets in internationalization to BoP markets. This study highlights that international entrepreneurs with limited resources can improve the lives of people at the BoP with their business operations and act as small-scale institutional entrepreneurs contributing to the development of the institutional environment of BoP markets.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää kansainvälisiin tilinpäätösstandardeihin siirtymisen vaikutuksia epäsymmetriseen informaatioon Suomen osake-markkinoilla. Suomalaisten tilinpäätöskäytäntöjen ja kansainvälisten standardien eroja on selvitetty ensin laadullisin menetelmin,jonka jälkeen on tehty asymmetrisen informaation markkinapohjaisiin mittareihinperustuva kvantitatiivinen tutkimus. Yleisiin eroavaisuuksiin liittyvän selvityksen lisäksi on tutkittu erikseen erityisesti standardimuutoksen vaikutusta älylliseen pääomaan liittyvään informaation asymmetriaan. Empiirisessä osiossa älyllisen pääoman epäsuoraksi mitaksi on valittu kehitys- ja tutkimusmenojen suhde taseen loppusummaan. Kuten oletus oli, sekä laadullisen että empiirisen osion tulokset viittaavat siihen, että IFRS:n myötä informaatioympäristö on parantunut. Uudet standardit vaativat laajempaa ja tarkempaa informaation julkaisua liittyen älylliseen pääomaan, mikä ei ole kuitenkaan havaittavissa valituissa mittareissa
