El batalló dels esperitats. Barry Hannah

Aquest treball presenta una traducció al català d’un conte de l’obra Bats out of hell de Barry Hannah, un escriptor nascut al Sud dels Estats Units. L’interès d’aquest treball és la inexistència de traduccions de l’obra de Hannah al català i la denúncia que fa l’autor dels estereotips tan marcats de la societat de la seva regió natal.

Volcanic stratigraphy of Hannah Point, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

The Upper Cretaceous volcanic succession of Hannah Point is the best exposure of the Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group on L ivingston Island. The aim of the present paper is to contribute to the characterisation of the stratigr a p hy and petrogr a p hy of this little studied succession, and briefly discuss some aspects of the eru p t ive style of its volcanism. The succession is about 470 m thick and is here subdivided into five lithostratigraphic units (A to E from base to top). Unit A, approximately 120 m thick, is mainly composed of polymict clast-supported volcaniclastic breccias and also includes a dacitic lava laye r. Interstratified in the breccias of this unit, there is a thin laminated devitrified layer which shows some degree of welding. Unit B, approx imately 70 m thick, is almost entirely composed of volcaniclastic breccias, and includes a volcaniclastic conglomerate laye r. Breccias in this unit can be subdivided into two distinct types; polymict clast-supported breccias, and monomict matrix-supported breccias rich in juvenile components and displaying incipient welding. Unit C, about 65 m thick, is mainly composed of basaltic lavas, which are interlayered with minor vo lcaniclastic breccias. Unit D, approximately 65 m thick, is lithologically similar to unit B, composed of an alternation of polymict clasts upported breccias and matrix-supported breccias, and includes a volcaniclastic conglomerate laye r. Unit E, about 150 m thick, is mainly formed of thick andesitic lava layers. Minor basaltic dykes and a few normal faults cut the succession, and the contact betwe e n units A and B can be interpreted both as an unconformity or a fault. The matrix-supported breccias included in the succession of Hannah Point have high contents of juvenile components and incipient welding, which suggest that part of the succession is the result of pyroclastic fragmentation and emplacement from pyroclastic flows. In contrast, the polymict clast-supported breccias suggest reworking of previous deposits and deposition from cool mass flows. The lavas indicate eff u s ive volcanic eruptions, and the absence of features indicative of subaqueous volcanism suggests that at least these portions of the succession were emplaced in a subaerial environment .

El centro del pensamiento político de Hannah Arendt lo ocupa el concepto de acción, que se identifica con la capacidad humana de comenzar, de empezar algo nuevo. Sobre la violencia, Hannah Arendt, Àngela Lorena Fuster (trad.), Gerard Rosich (trad.), Fina Birulés (pròl.)

Motivada por el surgimiento de la reivindicación de la función de la violencia enla política, tanto en el terreno de la acción como en el discurso teórico, en Sobrela violència Arendt interroga la relación entre violencia y poder, entre política ydominación. Tal como señala Fina Birulés en el prólogo, sus reflexiones son elresultado del esfuerzo renovado por comprender las experiencias políticas a lasque Arendt se vio confrontada, en particular, la aparición en la escena pública deun discurso que reivindicaba la violencia como elemento central de la prácticarevolucionaria. Y como en otras ocasiones, la reflexión sobre el presente da lugara la crítica de la tradición de la filosofía política. En este sentido, y de modoejemplar, el libro se constituye como un “ejercicio de pensamiento político” que ala vez que interpreta los acontecimientos interroga las categorías con las que latradición ha pensado la política.

Una pintura d'Antoni Viladomat i Manalt (1678-1755) a Manresa : l'Assumpta de Santa Maria de l'Alba

This painting with an exceptional iconography of the Assumption of the Virgin with All the Saints, was saved from a altarpiece in the church of Santa Maria de l'Alba in Manresa, which was burnt during the Spanish Civil War. The article attributes this painting to Antoni Viladomat i Manalt (1678-1755), one of the most relevant figures in the Catalan artistic scene in the 18th century, and it dates it to the latter years of his extensive artistic career. An analysis of the work shows that the Catalan painter incorporated some figurative elements that he borrowed from an engraving of the Swiss engraver, Jakob Frey (1681-1752), interpreted from a canvas of the Italian painter Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764). This helps to relate the canvas of the Barcelona painter-based on his previous figurative work with high Roman baroque- to the new proposals of the so-called Roman barrochetto. In addition the study hopes to offer the reader an artistically cultural view of Antoni Viladomat, openly concerned by the novelties that constantly reached Catalonia by means of the engravings

Una revisió dels conceptes de responsabilitat i autoritat en l'educació a la llum de Hannah Arendt

Este texto aborda las dificultades que tiene para el sujeto contemporáneo asumir responsabilidades sociales. Presenta una revisión de 10s conceptos de responsabilidad y autoridad de 10s educadores a la luz del pensamiento de Hannah Arendt, y plantea la relación del educador con el conocimiento y con 10s sujetos de la educación. Por Último, reflexiona sobre la responsabilidad de educar para comprender y vivir la diversidad de nuestro mundo contemporáneo.

Sherali-Adams Relaxations and Indistinguishability in Counting Logics

Two graphs with adjacency matrices $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ are isomorphic if there exists a permutation matrix $\mathbf{P}$ for which the identity $\mathbf{P}^{\mathrm{T}} \mathbf{A} \mathbf{P} = \mathbf{B}$ holds. Multiplying through by $\mathbf{P}$ and relaxing the permutation matrix to a doubly stochastic matrix leads to the linear programming relaxation known as fractional isomorphism. We show that the levels of the Sherali--Adams (SA) hierarchy of linear programming relaxations applied to fractional isomorphism interleave in power with the levels of a well-known color-refinement heuristic for graph isomorphism called the Weisfeiler--Lehman algorithm, or, equivalently, with the levels of indistinguishability in a logic with counting quantifiers and a bounded number of variables. This tight connection has quite striking consequences. For example, it follows immediately from a deep result of Grohe in the context of logics with counting quantifiers that a fixed number of levels of SA suffice to determine isomorphism of planar and minor-free graphs. We also offer applications in both finite model theory and polyhedral combinatorics. First, we show that certain properties of graphs, such as that of having a flow circulation of a prescribed value, are definable in the infinitary logic with counting with a bounded number of variables. Second, we exploit a lower bound construction due to Cai, Fürer, and Immerman in the context of counting logics to give simple explicit instances that show that the SA relaxations of the vertex-cover and cut polytopes do not reach their integer hulls for up to $\Omega(n)$ levels, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph.
