Background Carotenoids are the most widespread group of pigments found in nature. In addition to their role in the physiology of the plant, carotenoids also have nutritional relevance as their incorporation in the human diet provides health benefits. In non-photosynthetic tissues, carotenoids are synthesized and stored in specialized plastids called chromoplasts. At present very little is known about the origin of the metabolic precursors and cofactors required to sustain the high rate of carotenoid biosynthesis in these plastids. Recent proteomic data have revealed a number of biochemical and metabolic processes potentially operating in fruit chromoplasts. However, considering that chloroplast to chromoplast differentiation is a very rapid process during fruit ripening, there is the possibility that some of the proteins identified in the proteomic analysis could represent remnants no longer having a functional role in chromoplasts. Therefore, experimental validation is necessary to prove whether these predicted processes are actually operative in chromoplasts. Results A method has been established for high-yield purification of tomato fruit chromoplasts suitable for metabolic studies. Radiolabeled precursors were efficiently incorporated and further metabolized in isolated chromoplast. Analysis of labeled lipophilic compounds has revealed that lipid biosynthesis is a very efficient process in chromoplasts, while the relatively low incorporation levels found in carotenoids suggest that lipid production may represent a competing pathway for carotenoid biosynthesis. Malate and pyruvate are efficiently converted into acetyl-CoA, in agreement with the active operation of the malic enzyme and the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex in the chromoplast. Our results have also shown that isolated chromoplasts can actively sustain anabolic processes without the exogenous supply of ATP, thus suggesting that these organelles may generate this energetic cofactor in an autonomous way. Conclusions We have set up a method for high yield purification of intact tomato fruit chromoplasts suitable for precursor uptake assays and metabolic analyses. Using targeted radiolabeled precursors we have been able to unravel novel biochemical and metabolic aspects related with carotenoid and lipid biosynthesis in tomato fruit chromoplasts. The reported chromoplast system could represent a valuable platform to address the validation and characterization of functional processes predicted from recent transcriptomic and proteomic data.

Arabidopsis thaliana contains two genes encoding farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) synthase (FPS), the prenyl diphoshate synthase that catalyzes the synthesis of FPP from isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). In this study, we provide evidence that the two Arabidopsis short FPS isozymes FPS1S and FPS2 localize to the cytosol. Both enzymes were expressed in E. coli, purified and biochemically characterized. Despite FPS1S and FPS2 share more than 90% amino acid sequence identity, FPS2 was found to be more efficient as a catalyst, more sensitive to the inhibitory effect of NaCl, and more resistant to thermal inactivation than FPS1S. Homology modelling for FPS1S and FPS2 and analysis of the amino acid differences between the two enzymes revealed an increase in surface polarity and a greater capacity to form surface salt bridges of FPS2 compared to FPS1S. These factors most likely account for the enhanced thermostability of FPS2. Expression analysis of FPS::GUS genes in seeds showed that FPS1 and FPS2 display complementary patterns of expression particularly at late stages of seed development, which suggests that Arabidopsis seeds have two spatially segregated sources of FPP. Functional complementation studies of the Arabidopsis fps2 knockout mutant seed phenotypes demonstrated that under normal conditions FPS1S and FPS2 are functionally interchangeable. A putative role for FPS2 in maintaining seed germination capacity under adverse environmental conditions is discussed.

Per a moltes persones, la manera de mirar, a Catalunya, la realitat sociolingüística i, en conseqüència, també la política lingüística que se'n desprèn- deriva fonamentalment encara de les idees i aspiracions que s'estengueren a partir de la dècada dels 60. Encara en plena dictadura, alguns intel.lectuals i activistes van anar elaborant un discurs reivindicatiu que, tot passant per les controvèrsies ideològico-terminològiques del 'bilingüisme' versus la 'diglòssia' i de l'ensenyament en la llengua de l'Estat versus la 'llengua materna', va anar cristal.lizant en el procés dit de 'normalització lingüística' en què ara ens trobem immersos. És des d'aquesta perspectiva de fons que, amb un concepte de 'bilingüisme' dimonitzat -per la seva suposada automàtica evolució cap a la 'substitució'- i amb l'ensenyament en 'llengua materna' més aviat sacralitzat, s'han anat construint les bases d'una organització lingüística pública que paradoxalment pot arribar ser, però, problemàtica i contraproduent sinó es va adaptant als canvis que el nostre context político-econòmico-tecnològic va experimentant.

Actuar sobre el futur implica realitzar algun tipus de prospectiva sobre com serà -o com sembla que serà- aquest futur. L'anticipació respecte dels fets que han d'ocórrer en la mesura que puguin ser previstos- i l'adequació dels discursos i les accions a les tendències que es dibuixen com a majoritàries en la societat són fonamentals per a l'èxit d'una acció transformadora.Ara com ara tot sembla indicar que ens dirigim cap a un futur 'glocal', és a dir, en part global i en part local. Molt probablement anirà creixent la interdependènciatecnoeconòmica de les societats humanes i la influència dels grans emissors tecnomediàtics sobre els més petits encara augmentarà més. Les possibilitats d'acció sobre la determinació dels usos lingüístics per part dels grups humans demogràficament poc extensos i/o políticament subordinats tendiran probablement a disminuir més que no pas a augmentar.Les representacions s'internacionalitzaran i passarem a una etapa 'polinacional' i deconsciència planetària. En situacions mínimament democràtiques la consciènciad'interdependència podrà tendir a fer baixar els adeptes a les ideologies independentistes estrictes -si els grups majoritaris dominants no abusen del seu poder- i caldrà passar a imaginar estructures d'autogovern o de sobirania cooperatives.Això farà més complex el fet de l'organització de la diversitat lingüística, ja que el contacte s'estendrà pertot -a causa de les integracions suprapolítiques i econòmiques o bé per raó dels moviments migratoris. La perspectiva d'una societat d'individus monolingües tindrà probablement pocs adeptes entre els grups humans menors i caldrà formular des del pensament complex propostes sostenibles d'equilibri en la distribució de funcions entre les llengües en presència.

Enseñar a aprender: por una mente activa y creativa.Hay que establecer claramente de entrada: a) mi visión de un cerebro-mente central enla vida de los humanos y plenamente activo en la construcción del 'mundo' y del propio conocimiento científico, y, b), como consecuencia, que la certeza de este último lo es sólo como 'verdad vigente', como dice Jorge Wagensberg, y, por tanto, abierta a nuevas propuestas y nuevos paradigmas. Desde este marco, considero que la enseñanza, especialmente la universitaria, debe dejar de verse como la sola transmisión de conocimiento fijado, inmutable y cierto, para pasar a enfatizar la perspectiva crítica y el estímulo creativo de los alumnos, ya desde su mismo inicio.

Alhora s'hi proposen mesures concretes de política lingüística en diversos camps, importants per a fer possible l'extensió de l'ús del català  en aquest segment generacional.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 modified with Nb has been produced through the sol-gel technique. Nanopowders have been obtained by means of the hydrolysis of pure alkoxides with deionized water and peptization of the resulting hydrolysate with diluted acid nitric at 100 C. The addition of Nb stabilizes the anatase phase to higher temperatures. XRD spectra of the undoped and the Nb-doped samples show that the undoped sample has been almost totally converted to rutile at 600 C, meanwhile the doped samples present still a low percentage of rutile phase. Nanocrystalline powders stabilized at 600 C with grain sizes of about 17 nm have successfully been synthesized by the addition of Nb with a concentration of 2% at., which appears to be an adequate additive concentration to improve the gas sensor performances, such as it is suggested by the catalytic conversion efficiency experiments performed from FTIR measurements. FTIR absorbance spectra show that catalytic conversion of CO occurs at lower temperatures when niobium is introduced. The electrical response of the films to different concentrations of CO and ethanol has been monitored in dry and wet environments in order to test the influence of humidity in the sensor response. The addition of Nb decreases the working temperature and increases the stability of the layers. Also, large enhancement of the response time is obtained even with lower working temperatures. Moreover, humidity effects on the gas sensor response toward CO and ethanol are less important in Nb-doped samples than in the undoped ones.

El batolito de Andorra-Mont Lluís es un tipico representante de los granitos de emplazamiento epizonal de 10s Pirineos. En su parte sur-occidental està constituido principalmente por granodioritas biotíticas, granodioritas biotítico-hornbléndicas y granitos biotíticos. Desde un punto de vista geoquímico puede considerarse como una asociación plutónica alumino-cafémica, ligeramente férrica y calcoalcalina con una ligera tendencia subalcalina.

Many mineralizations, showings and geochemical anomalies have been found in the Hercynian of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges during the last ten years. Many of them are enclosed in the Paleozoic sediments and volcanics and display pre-metamorphic syngenetic characteristics. The lower carboniferous manganese and base meta1 deposits appear to be formed from hydrothermal fluids springing up in the sea floor through active fractures controlling the filling of the basins in a extensional geotectonic setting. Although less evidence and more controversy is available, similar ore forming processes could have taken place in older Paleozoic times. The deformation and metamorphism have not played an important remobilization role, and most epigenetic deposits of Hercynian age are related to the hydrothermal cells induced by the post-metamorphic granitic intrusives.

Electrical transport in a modulation doped heterostructure of In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As grown on Si by molecular beam epitaxy has been measured. Quantum Hall effect and Subnikov¿De Haas oscillations were observed indicating the two¿dimensional character of electron transport. A mobility of 20¿000 cm2/V¿s was measured at 6 K for an electron sheet concentration of 1.7×1012 cm¿2. Transmission electron microscopy observations indicated a significant surface roughness and high defect density of the InGaAs/InAlAs layers to be present due to the growth on silicon. In addition, fine¿scale composition modulation present in the In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As may further limit transport properties.

Optical absorption spectra and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations on InGaAs/InP layers under compressive strain are reported. From the band¿gap energy dispersion, the magnitude of the strain inhomogeneities. Is quantified and its microscopic origin is analyzed in view of the layer microstructure. TEM observations reveal a dislocation network at the layer interface the density of which correlates with ¿¿. It is concluded that local variations of dislocation density are responsible for the inhomogeneous strain field together with another mechanism that dominates when the dislocation density is very low.
