ArF excimer laser pulses (193 nm, 20 ns, 150 mJ) have been focused on a hydroxyapatite (HA) target in similar conditions to those normally used for thin film deposition. Fast intensified CCD images of HA laser ablation plumes have been taken in vacuum and under different water vapor pressures ranging from 0.01 mbar to 1 mbar. Images of HA ablation in vacuum have shown a plume freely expanding at a constant velocity of 2.3 106 cm/s. HA ablation under a water vapor pressure of 0.01 mbar has revealed an expansion behavior very similar to that of ablation in vacuum. Images taken under a water vapor pressure of 0.1 mbar have shown the formation of a shock structure in the plume. Finally, HA ablation under a water vapor pressure of 1 mbar has revealed the development of some irregularities in the shape of the plume.

Epitaxial thin films of Y¿doped SrZrO3 have been grown on MgO(001) by pulsed laser deposition. The deposition process has been performed at temperatures of 1000¿1200¿°C and at an oxygen pressure of 1.5×10¿1 mbar. The samples are characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry/channeling (RBS/C) and x¿ray diffraction (XRD). We found an epitaxial relationship of SrZrO3 (0k0) [101]¿MgO (001) [100]. Good crystalline quality is confirmed by RBS/C minimum yield values of 9% and a FWHM of 0.35° of the XRD rocking curve.

The substrate tuning technique was applied to a radio frequency magnetron sputtering system to obtain a variable substrate bias without an additional source. The dependence of the substrate bias on the value of the external impedance was studied for different values of chamber pressure, gas composition and rf input power. A qualitative explanation of the results is given, based on a simple model, and the role of the stray capacitance is clearly disclosed. Langmuir probe measurements show that this system allows independent control of the ion flux and the ion energy bombarding the growing film. For an argon flow rate of 2.8 sccm and a radio frequency power of 300 W (intermediate values of the range studied) the ion flux incident on the substrate was 1.3 X 1020-m-2-s-1. The maximum ion energy available in these conditions can be varied in the range 30-150 eV. As a practical application of the technique, BN thin films were deposited under different ion bombardment conditions. An ion energy threshold of about 80 eV was found, below which only the hexagonal phase was present in the films, while for higher energies both hexagonal and cubic phase were present. A cubic content of about 60% was found for an ion energy of 120 V.

We present a study on the development and the evaluation of a fully automated radio-frequency glow discharge system devoted to the deposition of amorphous thin film semiconductors and insulators. The following aspects were carefully addressed in the design of the reactor: (1) cross contamination by dopants and unstable gases, (2) capability of a fully automated operation, (3) precise control of the discharge parameters, particularly the substrate temperature, and (4) high chemical purity. The new reactor, named ARCAM, is a multiplasma-monochamber system consisting of three separated plasma chambers located inside the same isothermal vacuum vessel. Thus, the system benefits from the advantages of multichamber systems but keeps the simplicity and low cost of monochamber systems. The evaluation of the reactor performances showed that the oven-like structure combined with a differential dynamic pumping provides a high chemical purity in the deposition chamber. Moreover, the studies of the effects associated with the plasma recycling of material from the walls and of the thermal decomposition of diborane showed that the multiplasma-monochamber design is efficient for the production of abrupt interfaces in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based devices. Also, special attention was paid to the optimization of plasma conditions for the deposition of low density of states a-Si:H. Hence, we also present the results concerning the effects of the geometry, the substrate temperature, the radio frequency power and the silane pressure on the properties of the a-Si:H films. The influence of radio frequency (rf) power and pressure on deposition rate and structural properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films, prepared by rf glow discharge decomposition of silane, have been studied by phase modulated ellipsometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It has been found two pressure regions separated by a threshold value around 20 Pa where the deposition rate increases suddenly. This behavior is more marked as rf power rises and reflects the transition between two rf discharges regimes. The best quality films have been obtained at low pressure and at low rf power but with deposition rates below 0.2 nm/s. In the high pressure region, the enhancement of deposition rate as rf power increases first gives rise to a reduction of film density and an increase of content of hydrogen bonded in polyhydride form because of plasma polymerization reactions. Further rise of rf power leads to a decrease of polyhydride bonding and the material density remains unchanged, thus allowing the growth of a-Si:H films at deposition rates above 1 nm/s without any important detriment of material quality. This overcoming of deposition rate limitation has been ascribed to the beneficial effects of ion bombardment on the a-Si:H growing surface by enhancing the surface mobility of adsorbed reactive species and by eliminating hydrogen bonded in polyhydride configurations.

We present a new model of sequential adsorption in which the adsorbing particles experience dipolar interactions. We show that in the presence of these long-range interactions, highly ordered structures in the adsorbed layer may be induced at low temperatures. The new phenomenology is manifest through significant variations of the pair correlation function and the jamming limit, with respect to the case of noninteracting particles. Our study could be relevant in understanding the adsorption of magnetic colloidal particles in the presence of a magnetic field.

Polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga thin films have been deposited by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique, using slices of a Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal as targets and onto Si (100) substrates at temperatures ranging from 673 K up to 973 K. Off-stoichiometry thin films were deposited at a base pressure of 1×10-6-Torr or in a 5 mTorr Ar atmosphere. Samples deposited in vacuum and temperatures above 823 K are magnetic at room temperature and show the austenitic {220} reflection in their x-ray diffraction patterns. The temperature dependences of both electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility suggest that these samples exhibit a structural martensitic transition at around 260 K. The magnetoresistance ratio at low temperature can be as high as 1.3%, suggesting the existence of a granular structure in the films

BACKGROUND: In rats, oral oleoyl-estrone (OE) decreases food intake and body lipid content. The aim of this study was to determine whether OE treatment affects the energy metabolism of pregnant rats and eventually, of their pups; i.e. changes in normal growth patterns and the onset of obesity after weaning. METHODS: Pregnant Wistar rats were treated with daily intragastric gavages of OE in 0.2 ml sunflower oil from days 11 to 21 of pregnancy (i.e. 10 nmol oleoyl-estrone/g/day). Control animals received only the vehicle. Plasma and hormone metabolites were determined together with variations in cellularity of adipose tissue. RESULTS: Treatment decreased food intake and lowered weight gain during late pregnancy, mainly because of reduced adipose tissue accumulation in different sites. OE-treated pregnant rats' metabolic pattern after delivery was similar to that of controls. Neonates from OE-treated rats weighed the same as those from controls. They also maintained the same growth rate up to weaning, but pups from OE-treated rats slowed their growth rate afterwards, despite only limited differences in metabolite concentrations. CONCLUSION: The OE influences on pup growth can be partially buffered by maternal lipid mobilization during the second half of pregnancy. This maternal metabolic "imprinting" may condition the eventual accumulation of adipose tissue after weaning, and its effects can affect the regulation of body weight up to adulthood.

The effect of hydrodynamic flow upon diffusion-limited deposition on a line is investigated using a Monte Carlo model. The growth process is governed by the convection and diffusion field. The convective diffusion field is simulated by the biased-random walker resulting from a superimposed drift that represents the convective flow. The development of distinct morphologies is found with varying direction and strength of drift. By introducing a horizontal drift parallel to the deposition plate, the diffusion-limited deposit changes into a single needle inclined to the plate. The width of the needle decreases with increasing strength of drift. The angle between the needle and the plate is about 45° at high flow rate. In the presence of an inclined drift to the plate, the convection-diffusion-limited deposit leads to the formation of a characteristic columnar morphology. In the limiting case where the convection dominates, the deposition process is equivalent to ballistic deposition onto an inclined surface.

Lettuce greenhouse experiments were carried out from March to June 2011 in order to analyze how pesticides behave from the time of application until their intake via human consumption taking into account the primary distribution of pesticides, field dissipation, and post-harvest processing. In addition, experimental conditions were used to evaluate a new dynamic plant uptake model comparing its results with the experimentally derived residues. One application of imidacloprid and two of azoxystrobin were conducted. For evaluating primary pesticide distribution, two approaches based on leaf area index and vegetation cover were used and results were compared with those obtained from a tracer test. High influence of lettuce density, growth stage and type of sprayer was observed in primary distribution showing that low densities or early growth stages implied high losses of pesticides on soil. Washed and unwashed samples of lettuce were taken and analyzed from application to harvest to evaluate removal of pesticides by food processing. Results show that residues found on the Spanish preharvest interval days were in all cases below officially set maximum residue limits, although it was observed that time between application and harvest is as important for residues as application amounts. An overall reduction of 40–60% of pesticides residues was obtained from washing lettuce. Experimentally derived residues were compared with modeled residues and deviate from 1.2 to 1.4 for imidacloprid and azoxystrobin, respectively, presenting good model predictions. Aquest article vol mostrar que la industrialització de Catalunya també va ser important a les comarques properes a la ciutat de Girona, especialment a la vall d’Anglès, ja que en aquesta població es conserva el vapor Burés, una màquina de vapor del principi del segle XX en molt bon estat. L'article es presenta en un to divulgador amb ànim de provocar anàlisis mes rigoroses dels temes tractats. En aquest sentit, l'apartat de la descripció tècnica del vapor Burés pretén estimular el seu estudi amb mes profunditat. Finalment, es fan un seguit de propostes, des de ben simples fins a mes agosarades, que caldria tenir en compte per avançar en una bona proposta d'ús públic dels elements patrimonials relacionats amb el vapor Burés

In this work we will prove that SiC-based MIS capacitors can work in environments with extremely high concentrations of water vapor and still be sensitive to hydrogen, CO and hydrocarbons, making these devices suitable for monitoring the exhaust gases of hydrogen or hydrocarbons based fuel cells. Under the harshest conditions (45% of water vapor by volume ratio to nitrogen), Pt/TaOx/SiO2/SiC MIS capacitors are able to detect the presence of 1 ppm of hydrogen, 2 ppm of CO, 100 ppm of ethane or 20 ppm of ethene, concentrations that are far below the legal permissible exposure limits.

Alzheimer"s disease and prion pathologies (e.g., Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)) display profound neural lesions associated with aberrant protein processing and extracellular amyloid deposits. Dab1 has been implicated in the regulation of Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP), but a direct link between human prion diseases and Dab1/APP interactions has not been published. Here we examined this putative relationship in seventeen cases of sporadic CJD (sCJD) post mortem. Biochemical analyses of brain tissue revealed two groups, which also correlated with PrPsc types 1 and 2. One group, with PrPsc type 1 showed increased Dab1 phosphorylation, and lower CTF production with an absence of A deposition. The second sCJD group, which carried PrPsc type 2, showed lower levels of Dab1 phosphorylation and CTF production, and A deposition. Thus, the present observations suggest a correlation between Dab1-phosphorylation, A deposition and PrPsc type in sCJD.

Two main coal-bearing sequences developed during the Oligocene in the Tertiary Ebro Basin, the Calaf (early Oligocene) and Mequinenza (late Oligocene) coal basins. Coal deposition took place in shallow marsh-swamp-lake complexes which sometimes became closed and evolved under warm climatic conditions with fluctuating humidity. These shallow lacustrine systems are closely interrelated with the terminal parts of the distributive fluvial systems which spread from the tectonically active Ebro basin margins. Laterally extensive lignite-bearing sequences, including rather thin, lenticular autochthonous and/or hypautochthonous coal seams with high ash and sulphur contents, characterized coal deposition in the shallow lacustrine systems. Coal seam geometry, which makes them nearly subeconomic, resulted from the tectonic instability during basin margin evolution and the sometimes closed, arid conditions under which the lacustrine systems evolved. High ash and sulphur contents resulted from the inadequate isolation of peat forming environments from clastic influx and from the very low acidity and sometimes high sulphate contents of the lacustrine waters. Coal exploration in shallow lacustrine sequences similar to those described here must take into account that the spread of coal-forming environments and maxima of coal deposition are usually coincident with lake expansions and retraction or shifting of the terminal fluvial zones interrelated with the lacustrine areas.

Bi1.5Zn1Nb1.5O7 (BZN) epitaxial thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on Al2O3 with a double ZnO buffer layer through domain matching epitaxy (DME) mechanism. The pole figure analysis and reciprocal space mapping revealed the single crystalline nature of the thin film. The pole figure analysis also shows a 60º twinning for the (222) oriented crystals. Sharp intense spots in the SAED pattern also indicate the high crystalline nature of BZN thin film. The Fourier filtered HRTEM images of the BZN-ZnO interface confirms the domain matched epitaxy of BZN with ZnO buffer. An electric field dependent dielectric tunability of 68% was obtained for the BZN thin films with inter digital capacitors patterned over the film.
