A short motif in Drosophila SECIS Binding Protein 2 provides differential binding affinity to SECIS RNA hairpins

Selenoproteins contain the amino acid selenocysteine which is encoded by a UGA Sec codon. Recoding UGA Sec requires a complex mechanism, comprising the cis-acting SECIS RNA hairpin in the 3′UTR of selenoprotein mRNAs, and trans-acting factors. Among these, the SECIS Binding Protein 2 (SBP2) is central to the mechanism. SBP2 has been so far functionally characterized only in rats and humans. In this work, we report the characterization of the Drosophila melanogaster SBP2 (dSBP2). Despite its shorter length, it retained the same selenoprotein synthesis-promoting capabilities as the mammalian counterpart. However, a major difference resides in the SECIS recognition pattern: while human SBP2 (hSBP2) binds the distinct form 1 and 2 SECIS RNAs with similar affinities, dSBP2 exhibits high affinity toward form 2 only. In addition, we report the identification of a K (lysine)-rich domain in all SBP2s, essential for SECIS and 60S ribosomal subunit binding, differing from the well-characterized L7Ae RNA-binding domain. Swapping only five amino acids between dSBP2 and hSBP2 in the K-rich domain conferred reversed SECIS-binding properties to the proteins, thus unveiling an important sequence for form 1 binding.

Identifying monetary policy shocks in Japan

It is sometimes argued that the central banks influence the private economy in the short run through controlling a specific component of high powered money, not its total amount. Using a structural VAR approach, this paper evaluates this claim empirically, in the context of the Japanese economy. I estimate a model based on the standard view that the central bank controls the total amount of high powered money, and another model based on the alternative view that it controls only a specific component. It is shown that the former yields much more sensible estimates than thelatter.

Circulation of private notes during a currency shortage

This paper provides a search theoretical model that captures two phenomena that have characterized several episodes of monetary history: currency shortages and the circulation of privately issued notes. As usual in these models, the media of exchange are determined as part of the equilibrium. We characterize all the different equilibria and specify the conditions under which there is a currency shortage and/or privately issued notes are used as means of payment. There is multiplicity of equilibria for the entire parameter space, but there always exist an equilibrium in which notes circulate, either alone or together with coins. Hence, credit is a self-fulfilling phenomenon that depends on the beliefs of agents about the acceptability and future repayment of notes. The degree of circulation of coins depends on two crucial parameters, the intrinsic utility of holding coins and the extent with which it is possible to find exchange opportunities in the market.

Un solidus de la época de Severo III procedente de Esterri d'Aneu

Las circunstancias del hallazgo de esta moneda son completamente fortuitas. Se encontró junto al embalse de La Torrassa (La Guingueta), cerca de la localidad de Esterri d'Aneu, Pallars Sobira, provincia de LIeida, siendo sus descubridores los hijos de don Pascual Massanet. Las características de la moneda son las siguientes: es de oro y muy poco desgastada, prácticamente «flor de cuño», conservando casi su peso originario que es de 4,110 gr., siendo su diámetro de 21 mm. Las leyendas del anverso y del reverso se leen perfectamente.

Las monedas de Claudio I halladas en Clunia (Burgos)

Antes de dar principio a nuestro trabajo, no podemos por menos que señalar, y al mismo tiempo agradecer, la ayuda prestada, tanto en forma de sugerencia como en material, por el director de las excavaciones P. de Palol, y asimismo agradecer al director del Museo de Soria, J. L. Argente, las facilidades dadas en el momento de estudiar las monedas de las antiguas excavaciones de B. Taracena, depositadas en dicho museo. Hemos, pues, intentado realizar un estudio sobre las monedas de Claudio I, halladas en la ciudad de Clunia. Para ello han sido utilizadas las anteriormente citadas de las viejas excavaciones de B. Taracenal y las de las actuales excavaciones, de las cuales las pertenecientes a las primeras campañas -1958-1964- fueron ya publicadas por R. Martín Valls,2 siendo el resto -1965-1975 - inéditas. Disponemos, pues, de un total de sesenta y ocho monedas, sin contar una gran cantidad de ejemplares, que por su desgaste nos es imposible identificar con seguridad la figura de Claudio, y que, por tanto, las excluimos del estudio.

La traducción y los textos bilingües (japonés-inglés) para estudiantes de japonés: análisis de las antologías de relatos cortos y de las revistas de idioma

El treball estudia els dos tipus de textos bilingües japonès-anglès (llibres i revistes) que existeixen per a estudiants de japonès. La primera part analitza quatre antologies des de la perspectiva de la paratextualitat i de la teoria funcionalista de Christiane Nord (1997). A continuació, s'estudien les tècniques de traducció, a partir dels desenvolupaments teòrics d'Amparo Hurtado i Lucía Molina (2002), en el conte «The Third Night» de Natsume Sôseki. A la segona part s'investiguen dues revistes d'idiomes mensuals, Nihongo Journal i Hiragana Times. Es tracta d’analitzar la influència del propòsit pedagògic en les traduccions. Finalmente, incluye un ejemplo real de traducción.

Los referentes culturales y su tratamiento en la traducción del manga: los casos de La espada del inmortal, GALS!, Vidas etílicas y Ranma ½

L’objecte d’estudi d’aquesta investigació és l’observació i categorització dels referents culturals que apareixen en obres manga (còmic japonès) i la descripció del tractament que reben els elements esmentats en les versions traduïdes. Es tracta d’un estudi sincrònic de la traducció del primer volum de quatre obres publicades a España en castellà: La espada del inmortal, GALS!, Vidas etílicas i Ranma ½. Cadascun d’ells s’ha escollit per pertànyer a un gènere de manga dirigit a un segment de la població japonesa determinat: seinen (homes), shôjo (nenes-noies), jôsei (dones) y shônen (nens-nois)

Bootstrapping a statistical speech translator from a rule-based one

We describe a series of experiments in which we start with English to French and English to Japanese versions of an Open Source rule-based speech translation system for a medical domain, and bootstrap correspondign statistical systems. Comparative evaluation reveals that the rule-based systems are still significantly better than the statistical ones, despite the fact that considerable effort has been invested in tuning both the recognition and translation components; also, a hybrid system only marginally improved recall at the cost of a los in precision. The result suggests that rule-based architectures may still be preferable to statistical ones for safety-critical speech translation tasks.

Las monedas con nombres de étnicos del s. II a.C. en el nordeste peninsular: ¿Reflejo de posibles circunscripciones? ¿Civitates con doble nombre?

En el s. II a.C. se emiten en el nordeste de Hispania monedas con el nombre de étnicos conocidos por las fuentes escritas. Se plantea el problema de si responden a una organización territorial en circunscripciones que, curiosamente, correponden con las regiones principales populi que cita Plinio. Por otro lado estas cecas podrían corresponder a localidades que pudieran tener otro nombre.

Detectings low introgression of invasive alleles in an extensively restocked game bird

Interbreeding of two species in the wild implies introgression of alleles from one species into the other only when admixed individuals survive and successfully backcross with the parental species. Consequently, estimating the proportion of first generation hybrids in a population may not inform about the evolutionary impact of hybridization. Samples obtained over a long time span may offer a more accurate view of the spreading of introgressed alleles in a species" gene pool. Common quail (Coturnix coturnix) populations in Europe have been restocked extensively with farm quails of hybrid origin (crosses with Japanese quails, C. japonica). We genetically monitored a common quail population over 15 years to investigate whether genetic introgression is occurring and used simulations to investigate our power to detect it. Our results revealed that some introgression has occurred, but we did not observe a significant increase over time in the proportion of admixed individuals. However, simulations showed that the degree of admixture may be larger than anticipated due to the limited power of analyses over a short time span, and that observed data was compatible with a low rate of introgression, probably resulting from reduced fitness of admixed individuals. Simulations predicted this could result in extensive admixture in the near future.

Un conjunto numismático del siglo XVI en la Cova del Ramal de la Raconada (Castelldefels, Barcelona)

[eng]A few 16th century coins found in the Cova del Ramal de la Raconada (Castelldefels, Barcelona) This paper announces the finding of eight coins at the excavation site of the Cova del Ramal de la Raconada (Castelldefels, Barcelona). An analysis of the cluster enables this numismatic material to be situated chronologically in the third quarter of the 16th century and to associate it with the monetary circulation at the beginning of the Modern Age. In addition, the material from the Cova del Ramal de la Raconada and other Bajo Llobregat locations enables us to make assumptions on the historical context at the end of the 16th century in the Barcelona coastal region.

La Palma - Nova Classis: a Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus encampment during the Second Punic War in Iberia

This paper presents the discovery of the oldest Roman camp on the Iberian Peninsula, a camp from the Second Punic War situated in La Palma (Tarragona, Spain), by the mouth of the River Ebro. Although no structural remains have been found, the site's strategic in- terest along with many coins, arms and fragments of amphoras and other objects indicate that a military camp was established here between 218 and 209 BC. Written sources, mainly Polybius and Livy, suggest that La Palma was where the legions of Publius Cornelius Scipio gathered before the attack on Carthago Nova in 209 BC. The paper ends by suggesting that La Palma may be the Roman camp of Nova Classis mentioned by Livy during the events of the war in 217 BC.

European payment system and monetary union

We make a comparative study of payment systems for E.U. -fifteen countries for the 1996-2002 period. Special attention is paid to the introduction of the new European single currency. The overall trend in payments is for a move from cash to noncash payment instruments, although electronic instruments are not widely used yet. We find a significant impact from the introduction of the new banknotes and coins on card use
