A magnetically recoverable Pt(0) catalyst was prepared by in situ H(2) reduction of Pt(2+) species bound to an amino modified silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles. Compared to ordinary silica (maximum uptake Pt 0.03 wt%), the amino-functionalized silica surfaces were loaded with 1.95 wt% of metal. The supported Pt(0) nanoparticles exhibit high catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of alkenes and ketones under solventless mild reaction conditions. Partially hydrogenated products could also be isolated. The magnetic property of the catalyst grants a fast and efficient product isolation compared to traditional methods used in heterogeneous systems that generally make use of time- and solvent-consuming procedures. The improvement of the enzymatic performance of Aspergillus terreus and Rhizopus oryzae in enantioselective bioreductions by using glycerol as a co-solvent has been studied. In the most of the bioreductions, glycerol has demonstrated its potential for improved conversions (up to >99%) and enantioselectivities (up to >99%) when compared to reactions in aqueous or other aqueous-organic media (THF, diethyl ether, toluene, DMSO and acetonitrile). Moreover, high isolated yields of the desired chiral alcohols have been obtained on a preparative scale showing the great potential of this green solvent in biocatalysis. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO(2)) extractions of Brazilian cherry (Eugenia uniflora L.) were carried out under varied conditions of pressure and temperature, according to a central composite 2(2) experimental design, in order to produce flavour-rich extracts. The composition of the extracts was evaluated by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The abundance of the extracted compounds was then related to sensory analysis results, assisted by principal component and factorial discriminant analysis (PCA and FDA, respectively). The identified sesquiterpenes and ketones were found to strongly contribute to the characteristic flavour of the Brazilian cherry. The extracts also contained a variety of other volatile compounds, and part of the fruit wax contained long-chain hydrocarbons that according to multivariate analysis, contributed to the yield of the extracts, but not the flavour. Volatile phenolic compounds, to which antioxidant properties are attributed, were also present in the extracts in high proportion, regardless of the extraction conditions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A short and efficient approach to a range of new chiral and achiral functionalized (E)-enaminopyran-2,4-diones starting with commercially available dehydroacetic acid is described. The phytotoxic properties of these (E)-enaminopyran-2,4-diones were evaluated by their ability to interfere with the growth of Sorghum bicolor and Cucumis sativus seedlings. A different sensitivity of the two crops was evident with the (E)-enaminopyran-2,4-diones. The most active compounds were also tested against two weeds, Ipomoea grandifolia and Brachiaria decumbens. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing enaminopyran-2,4-diones as potential plant growth regulators.

The complex mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] [dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane] was used as a precursor in the synthesis of the complexes tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)], ct-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)]. cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dppb)] (2Ac4mT = N(4)-meta-tolyl-2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone ion) and trans-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(mang)] (mang = mangiferin or 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone-C2-beta-D-glucoside) complexes. For the synthesis of Run complexes, the Ru(III) atom in mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] may be reduced by H(2)(g), forming the intermediate [Ru(2)Cl(4)(dppb)(2)], or by a ligand (such as H2Ac4mT or mangiferin). The X-ray structures of the cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)] and [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dPpb)] complexes were determined. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The ""Ru(P-P)"" unit (P-P = diphosphine) is recognized to be an important core in catalytic species for hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates. Thus, in this study we synthesized six new complexes containing this core, including the binuclear complex [(dppb)(CO)Cl(2)Ru-pz-RuCl(2)(CO)(dPPb)] (pz = pyrazine) which can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of cationic carbonyl species of general formula [RuCl(CO)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) (N-N = diimine). Complexes with the formula (RuCl(py)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) were synthesized by exhaustive electrolysis of these carbonyl compounds or from the precursors [RuCl(2)(dppb)(N-N)]. The new complexes were characterized by microanalysis, conductivity measurements, IR and (31)P{(1)H)} NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray crystallography. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The production of volatile organic compounds (VOC) by plants is well known. However, few scientific groups have studied VOC produced by green, brown and red algae. Headspace collection of volatiles and solid phase microextraction, as well as the traditional extraction by hydrodistillation combined with analytical chromatographic techniques (i.e., GC-MS), have significantly improved the investigation of VOC from plants and algae. The major volatile compounds found in seaweeds are hydrocarbons, terpenes, phenols, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, fatty acids and halogen or sulfur-containing compounds. This article presents an overview of VOC isolated from and identified in marine macro-algae. Focus is given to non-halogenated and non-sulfur volatile compounds, as well as strategies to analyze and identify algal VOC by GC-MS.

Insect digestive chymotrypsins are present in a large variety of insect orders but their substrate specificity still remains unclear. Ewer insect chymotrypsins from 3 different insect orders (Dictyoptera, Coleoptera and two Lepidoptera) were isolated using affinity chromatography. Enzymes presented molecular masses in the range of 20 to 31 kDa and pH optima in the range of 7.5 to 10.0. Kinetic characterization. using different, colorimetric and fluorescent substrates indicated that insect chymotrypsins differ from, bovine chymotrypsin in their primary specificity toward small substrates (like N-benzoyl-L-Tyr p-nitroanilide) rather than on their preference for large substrates (exemplified by Succynil-Ala-Ala-Pro-Phe P-nitroanilide). Chloromethyl ketones (TPCK, N-alpha-tosyl-L-Phe chloromethyl ketone and Z-GGF-CK, N-carbobenzoxy-Gly-Gly-phe-CK) inactivated all chymotrypsins legated. Inactivation rates follow apparent first-order kinetics with variable second order rates (TPCK, 42 to 130 M(-1)s(-1); Z-GGF-CK, 150 to 450 M(-1)s(-1) that may be remarkably low for S. frugiperda chymotrypsin (TPCK, 6 M(-1)s(-1); Z-GGF-CK, 6.1 M(-1) s(-1)). Homology modelling and sequence alignment showed that. in lepidopteran chymotrypsins, differences in the amino acid residues in the neighborhood of the catalytic His 57 may affect its pKa, value. This is Proposed as the cause of the decrease in His 57 reactivity toward chloromethyl ketones. Such amino acid replacement in the active site is proposed. to be an adaptation to the presence of dietary ketones. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The first one-pot synthesis of neutral and electron-rich [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]arenes (HTIBs) from iodine and arenes is presented, thereby avoiding the need for expensive iodine(III) precursors. A large set of including a polyfluorinated analogue, can be obtained from the corresponding aryl iodide under the same conditions. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, without excess reagents, and is fast and high-yielding. Together, the two presented routes give access to a wide range of HTIBs, which are useful reagents in a variety of synthetic transformations.

The use of whole cells of micro-organisms to bring about the biotransformation of an organic compound offers a number of advantages, but problems caused by enzymatic Promiscuity may be encountered upon With Substrates hearing more than one functional group. A one-pot screening method, in which whole fungal cells were incubated with a Mixture of 4-rnethylcyclohexanone I and phenyl methyl Sulfide 2, has been employed to determine the chemoselectivity of various biocatalysts. The hyphomycetes, Aspergillus terreus CCT 3320 and A. terreus URM 3571, catalysed the oxidation of 2 accompanied by the reduction of I to 4-methylcyclohexanol 1a and, for strain A. terreus CCT 3320, the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 1. The Basidomycetes, Trametes versicolor CCB 202, Pycnoporus sanguineus CCB 501 and Trichaptum byssogenum CCB 203, catalysed the oxidation of 2 and the reduction 1, but no Baeyer-Villiger reaction products were detected. In contrast. Trametes rigida CCB 285 catalysed the biotransformation of 1 to 1a, exclusively, in the absence of any detectable Sulfide oxidation reactions. The chemoselective reduction Of (+/-)-2-(phenylthio)cyclohexanone 3 by T. rigida CCB 285 afforded exclusively the (+)-cis-(1R,2S) and (+)-trans-(1S,2S) diastereoisomers of 2-(phenylthio)cyclohexan-1-ol 3a in moderate yields (13% and 27%, respectively) and high enantiomeric excesses (>98%). Chemoselective screening for the reduction of a ketone and/or the oxidation Of a Sulfide group in one pot by whole cells of micro-organisms represents an attractive technique with applications in the development of synthesis of complex molecule hearing different functional groups. Homoallylic alcohols (primary, secondary, or tertiary containing an endocyclic or an exocyclic double bond) react with equimolar amounts of aldehydes (aliphatic or aromatic) and ketones (aliphatic) in the presence of 5 mol % of iodine. This Prins cyclization was used in the preparation of hexahydrobenzo[f]isochromenes and of a 4-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran, in 54-81% yield. The procedure is also efficient for an aza-Prins cyclization of a homoallylic sulfonamide and benzaldehyde, producing a hexahydrobenzo[f]isoquinoline. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

trans-1,3-Disubstituted indanes are conveniently accessed by a stereoselective ring contraction of 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes upon treatment with thallium(III) nitrate (TTN) in acetonitrile. Under these conditions, the oxidative rearrangement of either di- or trisubstituted double bonds is possible.

Enantioselective creation of benzylic quaternary centers still is a continuous challenge to many synthetic organic chemists. Among the existing methods for installation of this type of center, the direct asymmetric alpha-arylation of carbonyl compounds is very attractive due to the ready availability of the coupling substrates. Herein, we present some new tools to the catalytic asymmetric alpha-arylation of carbonyl compounds that overcame many of the drawbacks posted in previous methods for this type of reaction.
