In this paper, we study the Reidemeister spectrum for metabelian groups of the form Q(n) x Z and Z[1/p](n) x Z. Particular attention is given to the R(infinity)-property of a subfamily of these groups.

Special groups are an axiomatization of the algebraic theory of quadratic forms over fields. It is known that any finite reduced special group is the special group of some field. We show that any special group that is the projective limit of a projective system of finite reduced special groups is also the special group of some field.

In this paper, we determine the lower central and derived series for the braid groups of the projective plane. We are motivated in part by the study of Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequences, but the problem is interesting in its own right. The n-string braid groups B(n)(RP(2)) of the projective plane RP(2) were originally studied by Van Buskirk during the 1960s. and are of particular interest due to the fact that they have torsion. The group B(1)(RP(2)) (resp. B(2)(RP(2))) is isomorphic to the cyclic group Z(2) of order 2 (resp. the generalised quaternion group of order 16) and hence their lower central and derived series are known. If n > 2, we first prove that the lower central series of B(n)(RP(2)) is constant from the commutator subgroup onwards. We observe that Gamma(2)(B(3)(RP(2))) is isomorphic to (F(3) X Q(8)) X Z(3), where F(k) denotes the free group of rank k, and Q(8) denotes the quaternion group of order 8, and that Gamma(2)(B(4)(RP(2))) is an extension of an index 2 subgroup K of P(4)(RP(2)) by Z(2) circle plus Z(2). As for the derived series of B(n)(RP(2)), we show that for all n >= 5, it is constant from the derived subgroup onwards. The group B(n)(RP(2)) being finite and soluble for n <= 2, the critical cases are n = 3, 4. We are able to determine completely the derived series of B(3)(RP(2)). The subgroups (B(3)(RP(2)))((1)), (B(3)(RP(2)))((2)) and (B(3)(RP(2)))((3)) are isomorphic respectively to (F(3) x Q(8)) x Z(3), F(3) X Q(8) and F(9) X Z(2), and we compute the derived series quotients of these groups. From (B(3)(RP(2)))((4)) onwards, the derived series of B(3)(RP(2)), as well as its successive derived series quotients, coincide with those of F(9). We analyse the derived series of B(4)(RP(2)) and its quotients up to (B(4)(RP(2)))((4)), and we show that (B(4)(RP(2)))((4)) is a semi-direct product of F(129) by F(17). Finally, we give a presentation of Gamma(2)(B(n)(RP(2))). (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Analogous to *-identities in rings with involution we define *-identities in groups. Suppose that G is a torsion group with involution * and that F is an infinite field with char F not equal 2. Extend * linearly to FG. We prove that the unit group U of FG satisfies a *-identity if and only if the symmetric elements U(+) satisfy a group identity.

We prove that the symplectic group Sp(2n, Z) and the mapping class group Mod(S) of a compact surface S satisfy the R(infinity) property. We also show that B(n)(S), the full braid group on n-strings of a surface S, satisfies the R(infinity) property in the cases where S is either the compact disk D, or the sphere S(2). This means that for any automorphism phi of G, where G is one of the above groups, the number of twisted phi-conjugacy classes is infinite.

We consider locally nilpotent subgroups of units in basic tiled rings A, over local rings O which satisfy a weak commutativity condition. Tiled rings are generalizations of both tiled orders and incidence rings. If, in addition, O is Artinian then we give a complete description of the maximal locally nilpotent subgroups of the unit group of A up to conjugacy. All of them are both nilpotent and maximal Engel. This generalizes our description of such subgroups of upper-triangular matrices over O given in M. Dokuchaev, V. Kirichenko, and C. Polcino Milies (2005) [3]. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. We consider the problem of classifying those groups whose maximal cyclic subgroups are maximal. We give a complete classification of those groups with this property and which are either soluble or residually finite.

Let M be a compact, connected non-orientable surface without boundary and of genus g >= 3. We investigate the pure braid groups P,(M) of M, and in particular the possible splitting of the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence 1 -> P(m)(M \ {x(1), ..., x(n)}) hooked right arrow P(n+m)(M) (P*) under right arrow P(n)(M) -> 1, where m, n >= 1, and p* is the homomorphism which corresponds geometrically to forgetting the last m strings. This problem is equivalent to that of the existence of a section for the associated fibration p: F(n+m)(M) -> F(n)(M) of configuration spaces, defined by p((x(1), ..., x(n), x(n+1), ..., x(n+m))) = (x(1), ..., x(n)). We show that p and p* admit a section if and only if n = 1. Together with previous results, this completes the resolution of the splitting problem for surface pure braid groups. We classify the ( finite and infinite) virtually cyclic subgroups of the pure braid groups P(n)(RP(2)) of the projective plane. The maximal finite subgroups of P(n)(RP(2)) are isomorphic to the quaternion group of order 8 if n = 3, and to Z(4) if n >= 4. Further, for all n >= 3, the following groups are, up to isomorphism, the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of P(n)(RP(2)): Z, Z(2) x Z and the amalgamated product Z(4)*(Z2)Z(4).

Comfort and Remus [W.W. Comfort, D. Remus, Abelian torsion groups with a pseudo-compact group topology, Forum Math. 6 (3) (1994) 323-337] characterized algebraically the Abelian torsion groups that admit a pseudocompact group topology using the Ulm-Kaplansky invariants. We show, under a condition weaker than the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis, that an Abelian torsion group (of any cardinality) admits a pseudocompact group topology if and only if it admits a countably compact group topology. Dikranjan and Tkachenko [D. Dikranjan. M. Tkachenko, Algebraic structure of small countably compact Abelian groups, Forum Math. 15 (6) (2003) 811-837], and Dikranjan and Shakhmatov [D. Dikranjan. D. Shakhmatov, Forcing hereditarily separable compact-like group topologies on Abelian groups, Topology Appl. 151 (1-3) (2005) 2-54] showed this equivalence for groups of cardinality not greater than 2(c). We also show, from the existence of a selective ultrafilter, that there are countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences of cardinality kappa(omega), for any infinite cardinal kappa. In particular, it is consistent that for every cardinal kappa there are countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences whose weight lambda has countable cofinality and lambda > kappa. Let G = Z/a x(mu) (Z/b x TL(2)(F(p))) and X(n) be an n-dimensional CW-complex with the homotopy type of the n-sphere. We determine the automorphism group Aut(G) and then compute the number of distinct homotopy types of spherical space forms with respect to free and cellular G-actions on all CW-complexes X(2dn - 1), where 2d is a period of G. Next, the group E(X(2dn - 1)/alpha) of homotopy self-equivalences of spherical space forms X(2dn - 1)/alpha, associated with such G-actions alpha on X(2dn - 1) are studied. Similar results for the rest of finite periodic groups have been obtained recently and they are described in the introduction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Carra sawdust pretrated with formaldehyde was used to adsorb RR239 (reactive azo dye) at varying pH and zerovalent iron (ZVI) dosage. Modeling of kinetic results shows that sorption process is best described by the pseudo-second-order model. Batch experiments suggest that the decolorization efficiency was strongly enhanced with the presence of ZVI and low solution pH. The kinetics of dye sorption by mixed sorbent (5 g of sawdust and 180 mg of ZVI) at pH 2.0 was rapid, reaching more than 90% of the total discoloration in three minutes.

The protonation effect on the vibrational and electronic spectra of 4-aminoazobenzene and 4-(dimethylamino)azobenzene was investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy, and the results were discussed on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations. Although this class of molecular systems has been investigated in the past concerning the azo-hydrazone tautomerism, the present work is the first to use CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations to unveil the structure of both tautomers as well the nature of the molecular orbitals involved in chromophoric moieties responsible for the resonance Raman enhancement patterns. More specifically both the resonance Raman and theoretical results show clearly that in the neutral species, the charge transfer transition involves mainly the azo moiety, whereas in the protonated forms there is a great difference, depending on the tautomer. In fact, for the azo tautomer the transition is similar to that observed in the corresponding neutral species, whereas in the hydrazone tautomer such a transition is much more delocalized due to the contribution of the quinoid structure. The characterization of protonated species and the understanding of the tautomerization mechanism are crucial for controlling molecular properties depending on the polarity and pH of the medium.

The photocatalytic degradation of Janus Green B azo dye over silver modified titanium dioxide films was investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). An optimized SERS-active substrate was employed to study the photodegradation reaction of Janus Green B. Considering that photocatalytic degradation processes of organic molecules adsorbed on TiO2 might involve either their oxidation or reduction reaction, the vibrational spectroelectrochemical study of the dye was also performed, in order to clarify the transformations involved in initial steps of its photochemical decomposition. In order to understand the changes in Raman spectra of Janus Green B after photodegradation and/or electrochemical processes, a vibrational assignment of the main Raman active modes of the dye was carried out, based on a detailed resonance Raman profile. Products formed by electrochemical and photochemical degradation processes were compared. The obtained results revealed that the first steps of the degradation process of Janus Green B involve a reductive mechanism. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
