Nanocomposite materials have received considerable attention in recent years due to their novel properties. Grain boundaries are considered to play an important role in nanostructured materials. This work focuses on the finite element analysis of the effect of grain boundaries on the overall mechanical properties of aluminium/alumina composites. A grain boundary is incorporated into the commonly used unit cell model to investigate its effect on material properties. By combining the unit cell model with an indentation model, coupled with experimental indentation measurements, the ''effective'' plastic property of the grain boundary is estimated. In addition, the strengthening mechanism is also discussed based on the Estrin-Mecking model.

Objective: To document outcome and to investigate patterns of physical and psychosocial recovery in the first year following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in an Australian patient sample. Design: A longitudinal prospective study of a cohort of patients, with data collection at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post injury. Setting: A head injury rehabilitation unit in a large metropolitan public hospital. Patients: A sample of 55 patients selected from 120 consecutive admissions with severe TBI. Patients who were more than 3 months post injury on admission, who remained confused, or who had severe communication deficits or a previous neurologic disorder were excluded. Interventions: All subjects participated in a multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation program, followed by varied participation in outpatient rehabilitation and community-based sen ices. Main Outcome Measures: The Sickness impact Profile (SIP) provided physical, psychosocial, and total dysfunction scores at each follow-up. Outcome at 1 year was measured by the Disability Rating Scale. Results: Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the linear trend of recovery over time was less for psychosocial dysfunction than for physical dysfunction (F(1,51) = 5.87, P < .02). One rear post injury, 22% of subjects had returned to their previous level of employability, and 42% were able to live independently. Conclusions: Recovery from TBI in this Australian sample followed a pattern similar to that observed in other countries, with psychosocial dysfunction being more persistent. Self-report measures such as the SIP in TBI research are limited by problems of diminished self-awareness.

In order to separate the effects of experience from other characteristics of word frequency (e.g., orthographic distinctiveness), computer science and psychology students rated their experience with computer science technical items and nontechnical items from a wide range of word frequencies prior to being tested for recognition memory of the rated items. For nontechnical items, there was a curvilinear relationship between recognition accuracy and word frequency for both groups of students. The usual superiority of low-frequency words was demonstrated and high-frequency words were recognized least well. For technical items, a similar curvilinear relationship was evident for the psychology students, but for the computer science students, recognition accuracy was inversely related to word frequency. The ratings data showed that subjective experience rather than background word frequency was the better predictor of recognition accuracy.

This study investigates the effect of cash cropping on food availability and examines the determinants of the proportion of income allocated for food expenditures in the Nyeri district in Kenya. Using a Tobit model, the results suggest that in general food expenditure allocations suffer due to cash cropping in Kenya as the lump-sum income flows from this may be used for purchases other than food. Food expenditure also suffers when remittances are irregular. On the other hand, earnings from outside employment for married women living with husbands are positively associated with food expenditure allocations. Amounts of non-cash food output as well as ownership of livestock are negatively associated with food expenditure allocations. These findings indicate that lump sum income may not lead to improved welfare of women and children. Thus, there may be social reasons for increasing non-cash food production especially by women, instead of over emphasizing cash cropping as now seems to be so in public policy.

It has been known since the early sixties that nickel sulfide inclusions cause spontaneous fracture of toughened (thermally tempered) glass, but despite the considerable amount of work done on this problem in the last four decades, failures still occur in the field with regularity. In this study we have classified (by viewing through a 60x optical microscope) inclusions into two groups, which are classic and atypical nickel sulfides. The classics look like the nickel sulfide inclusions found at the initiation-of-fracture of windows that have broken spontaneously. We have compared the structure and composition of the atypical inclusions with the structure and composition of the classics. All of the classic and atypical nickel sulfide inclusions studied in this work were found to have a composition in the range of Ni52S48 to Ni48S52. Inclusions on the nickel rich side of stoichiometric NiS were found to be two-phase assemblies, and inclusions on the sulphur rich side of NiS were single phase. It had been proposed that the atypicals were passive, and of a different composition to the classics. However, we found that the difference between passive and dangerous nickel sulfide inclusions was not a difference in composition but rather a difference in the type of material in the internal pore space. The passive's had carbon char in their internal pore space, whereas the pore space of dangerous inclusions contained Na2O. The presence of Na2O and carbon char with the inclusions indicates that the formation of the inclusions results from a reaction of a nickel-rich phase with sodium sulphate and carbon. The oxidation of two fluorinated polyimides containing phenylphosphine oxide units, TOR-RC and TOR-RC ODPA, have been studied at 300 K for treatment by a water plasma and gamma -radiolysis in air. The changes in the O 1s/C 1s ratios obtained from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that for exposure to the water plasma the ratio increases at short exposure times and then levels to a constant value. Evidence for the formation of phosphate species was also obtained from the XPS analyses. Similar observations were made for gamma -radiolysis of the polymers in air. The polymers containing phenylphosphine oxide were found to be more resistant to oxidation in the water plasma than Kapton(R). Radiolysis of the polymers in air to high doses were also accompanied by a red shift in the visible absorption spectra.

OBJECTIVES: The authors prospectively examined the association between bowel movement frequency (used as a proxy for intestinal transit), laxative use, and the risk of symptomatic gallstone disease. METHODS: A total of 79,829 women, aged 36–61 yr, without a history of symptomatic gallstone disease and free of cancer, responded to a mailed questionnaire in 1982 that assessed bowel movement frequency and use of laxatives. Between 1984 and 1996, 4,443 incident cases of symptomatic gallstone disease were documented. Relative risks (RRs) of symptomatic gallstone disease and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using logistic regression. RESULTS: After controlling for age and established risk factors, the multivariate RRs were, compared to women with daily bowel movements, 0.97 (95% CI 0.86–1.08) for women with bowel movements every third day or less, and 1.00 (95% CI 0.91–1.11) for women with bowel movement more than once daily. No trend was evident. As compared to women who never used laxatives in 1982, a significant modest inverse association was seen for monthly laxative use, with a multivariate RR of 0.84 (95% CI 0.72–0.98), and weekly to daily laxative use was associated with a RR of 0.88 (95% CI 0.78–1.02). CONCLUSIONS: These findings do not support an association between infrequent bowel movements and risk of symptomatic gallstone disease in women, and indicate that simple questions directed at bowel movement frequency are unlikely to enhance our ability to predict risk of symptomatic gallstone disease. The slightly inverse association between use of laxatives and risk of symptomatic gallstone disease may be due to a mechanism that is not related to bowel movement frequency.

Background: Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that a specific polymorphism (allele 2 of both IL-1A +4845 and IL-1B +3954) in the IL-1 gene cluster has been associated with an increased susceptibility to severe periodontal disease and to an increased bleeding tendency during periodontal maintenance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between IL-1 genotype and periodontitis in a prospective longitudinal study in an adult population of essentially European heritage. Methods: From an ongoing study of the Oral Care Research Programme of The University of Queensland, 295 subjects consented to genotyping for IL-1 allele 2 polymorphisms. Probing depths and relative attachment levels were recorded at baseline, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months using the Florida probe. Periodontitis progression at a given site was defined as attachment loss greater than or equal to2 mm at any observation period during the 5 years of the study and the extent of disease progression determined by the number of sites showing attachment loss. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Prevotella intermedia were detected using ELISA. Results: 38.9% of the subjects were positive for the composite IL-1 genotype. A relationship between the IL-1 positive genotype and increased mean probing pocket depth in non-smokers greater than 50 years of age was found. Further, IL-1 genotype positive smokers and genotype positive subjects with P. gingivalis in their plaque had an increase in the number of probing depths greater than or equal to3.5 mm, There was a consistent trend for IL-1 genotype positive subjects to experience attachment loss when compared with IL-1 genotype negative subjects. Conclusion: The results of this study have shown an interaction of the IL-1 positive genotype with age, smoking and P. gingivalis which suggests that IL-1 genotype is a contributory but non-essential risk factor for periodontal disease progression in this population.
