We have investigated the influence of the material properties of the silicon device layer on the generation of defects, and in particular slip dislocations, in trenched and refilled fusion-bonded silicon-on-insulator structures. A strong dependence of the ease of slip generation on the type of dopant species was observed, with the samples falling into three basic categories; heavily boron-doped silicon showed ready slip generation, arsenic and antimony-doped material was fairly resistant to slip, while silicon moderately or lightly doped with phosphorous or boron gave intermediate behavior. The observed behavior appears to be controlled by differences in the dislocation generation mechanism rather than by dislocation mobility. The introduction of an implanted buried layer at the bonding interface was found to result in an increase in slip generation in the silicon, again with a variation according to the dopant species. Here, the greatest slip occurred for both boron and antimony-implanted samples. The weakening of the implanted material may be related to the presence of a band of precipitates observed in the silicon near the bonding interface. (C) 2001 The Electrochemical Society.

The self-consistent electron potential in a current-carrying disordered quantum wire is spatially inhomogeneous due to the formation of resistivity dipoles across scattering centres. In this paper it is argued that these inhomogeneities in the potential result in a suppression of the differential conductance of such a wire at finite applied voltage. A semi-classical argument allows this suppression, quadratic in the voltage, to be related directly to the amount of intrinsic defect scattering in the wire. This result is then tested against numerical calculations.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were demonstrated to exist within peripheral blood (PB) of several mammalian species including human, guinea pig, mice, rat, and rabbit. Whether or not the PB derived MSCs (PBMSCs) could enhance the regeneration of large bone defects have not been reported. In this study, rabbit MSCs were obtained from mononuclear cells (MNCs) cultures of both the PB and bone marrow (BM) origin. The number of PBMSCs was relatively lower, with the colony forming efficiency (CFE) ranging from 1.2-13 per million MNCs. Under specific inductive conditions, PBMSCs differentiated into osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes, showing multi- differentiation ability similar to BMMSCs. Bilateral 20 mm critical-sized bone defects were created in the ulnae of twelve 6-month old New Zealand white rabbits. The defects were treated with allogenic PBMSCs/Skelite (porous calcium phosphate resorbable substitute), BMMSCs/Skelite, PBMNCs/Skelite, Skelite alone and left empty for 12 weeks. Bone regeneration was evaluated by serial radiography, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), and histological examinations. Academic interest in the work of family centres in the United Kingdom has largely been concerned with categorising the work of such centres in terms of issues of childcare ideology, working practices and degree of service user control. Meanwhile, the re-focusing of child protection services in order to develop child welfare services has largely dominated childcare social work in recent years, with scant attention paid to the role of family centres in relation to this debate. This study is concerned with examining the perspectives of staff and service users in five 'client focussed' family centres in Northern Ireland in relation to how child protection issues are understood and dealt with. It was found that staff enter into negotiations with both referrers and service users to conceptually reframe child protection work as family support practice. This leads to the development of partnership relationships between staff and service users based upon mutual high regard. The work of such centres leaves them well placed to provide integrated services to children in need in line with current government priorities, but could leave some children vulnerable where child protection issues are not amenable to conceptual reframing along family support lines.
