The novel ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate has been synthesized and exhibits an unexpectedly low melting point (35 degreesC) considering the size and shape of the rigid, planar anion; analogous tetraalkylammonium salts (methyl, ethyl and n-butyl) have also been prepared and the tetraethylammonium example was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Difficulties in phonological processing have been proposed to be the core symptom of developmental dyslexia. Phoneme awareness tasks have been shown to both index and predict individual reading ability. In a previous experiment, we observed that dyslexic adults fail to display a P3a modulation for phonological deviants within an alliterated word stream when concentrating primarily on a lexical decision task [Fosker and Thierry, 2004, Neurosci. Lett. 357, 171-174]. Here we recorded the P3b oddball response elicited by initial phonemes within streams of alliterated words and pseudo-words when participants focussed directly on detecting the oddball phonemes. Despite significant verbal screening test differences between dyslexic adults and controls, the error rates, reactions times, and main components (P2, N2, P3a, and P3b) were indistinguishable across groups. The only difference between groups was found in the NI range, where dyslexic participants failed to show the modulations induced by phonological pairings (/b/-/p/ versus /r/ /g/) in controls. In light of previous P3a differences, these results suggest an important role for attention allocation in the manifestation of phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. The alkali-metal salts of meta-substituted benzoic acids exhibit a smectic A mesophase at high temperatures. These compounds are examples of liquid crystals without terminal alkyl chains. The influence of the metal ion and of the type of substituents on the transition temperatures is discussed. Compounds with the substituent in the ortho- and para-positions are non-mesomorphic. The crystal structures of the compounds Rb(C7H4ClO2)(C7H4ClO2H), Na(C7H4IO2)(H2O), K(C7H4ClO2)(C7H4ClO2H) and Rb(C7H4BrO2)(C7H4BrO2H) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. These compounds possess a layerlike structure in the solid state. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005)

The 9-hydroxyphenal-1-one ligand forms stable 3 : 1 complexes with trivalent lanthanides, in which it acts as an antenna suitable for the visible light excitation ( up to 475 nm) of the trivalent europium ion.

Alternative NADH dehydrogenases (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductases) are single subunit respiratory chain enzymes found in plant and fungal mitochondria and in many bacteria. It is unclear how these peripheral membrane proteins interact with their hydrophobic substrate ubiquinone. Known inhibitors of alternative NADH dehydrogenases bind with rather low affinities. We have identified 1-hydroxy-2-dodecyl-4(1H)quinolone as a high affinity inhibitor of alternative NADH dehydrogenase from Yarrowia lipolytica. Using this compound, we have analyzed the bisubstrate and inhibition kinetics for NADH and decylubiquinone. We found that the kinetics of alternative NADH dehydrogenase follow a ping-pong mechanism. This suggests that NADH and the ubiquinone headgroup interact with the same binding pocket in an alternating fashion.

This study explores identification with one's national group using two distinct but interrelated concepts: identity content and relational orientation. Theoretical distinctions were drawn between two forms of identity content: traditional-cultural and civic, and between two forms of relational orientation: blind and constructive. The multidimensionality of both identity content and relational orientation and the relationships amongst these components were examined in a British sample: positive relationships were hypothesized between blind orientation and traditional-cultural content and between constructive orientation and civic content. Principal components analyses confirmed the hypothesized factor structures, and the resulting scales were highly reliable. Relationships amongst the resulting factors were explored using regression analyses. The overall results indicate support for the orthogonality of both the two orientation dimensions and the two content dimensions. Moreover, the hypothesized relationships between forms of orientation and content were largely supported. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of looking at the relationship between identity content and relational orientation. The implications of these observations for theory and research are discussed with reference to using categories to

NDRG1 is phosphorylated by SGK1 (but not PKB) in vivo at three residues each contained within three nonapeptide repeats. Here, we demonstrate that this nonapeptide, like the NDRG1 protein, is phosphorylated by SGK1, but not by PKBalpha or RSK1 in vitro. The inability of PKBa and RSK1 to phosphorylate the nonapeptide was traced to residues n + 1, n + 2 and n - 4 (where n is the phosphorylation site). Changing them from Ser, Glu and Ser to Phe, Ala and Pro, respectively, transformed the nonapeptide into an excellent substrate for PKBalpha and RSK1. Our results identify a specific substrate for SGK1 and may facilitate detection of additional physiological substrates for this enzyme. (C) 2005 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. The phosphorylation status of the small hydrophobic (SH) protein of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was examined in virus-infected Vero cells. The SH protein v.,as isolated from [S-35]methionine- and [P-33]orthophosphate-labelled IRSV-infected cells and analysed by SDS-PAGE. In each case, a protein product of the expected size for the SH protein was observed. Phosphoamino acid analysis and reactivity with the phosphotyrosine specific antibody PY20 showed that the SH protein was modified by tyrosine phosphorylation. The role or tyrosine kinase activity in SH protein phosphorylation was confirmed by the use of genistein, a broad-spectrum tyrosine kinase inhibitor, to inhibit SH protein phosphorylation. Further analysis showed that the different glycosylated forms of the SH protein were phosphorylated, as was the oligomeric form of the protein. Phosphorylation of the SH protein was specifically inhibited by the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) p38 inhibitor SB203580, suggesting that SH protein phosphorylation occurs via a MAPK p38-dependent pathway. Analysis of virus-infected cells using fluorescence microscopy showed that, although the SH protein was distributed throughout the cytoplasm, it appeared to accumulate, at low levels, in the endoplasmic reticulum/Golgi complex, confirming recent observations. However, in the presence of SB203580. an increased accumulation of the SH protein in the Golgi complex was observed, although other virus structures, such as virus filaments and inclusion bodies, remained largely unaffected. These results showed that during RSV infection, the SH protein is modified by an MAPK p38-dependant tyrosine kinase activity and that this modification influences its cellular distribution.
