Light transmission through a single subwavelength aperture in a silver film is examined with a novel input configuration comprising an annular laser beam of variable diameter that is prism-coupled to the back face of the silver. Transmission peaks driven by excitation of the back-face surface plasmon mode or by the aperture resonance itself are separately observed. For both cases, comparison of films with and without a front-face, circular grating implies significantly more efficient coupling from the aperture fields to the front-face surface plasmon than directly to free radiation. Topographic and optical contrasts formed by Ga+ ion irradiation of thin films of amorphous silicon carbide have been investigated with scanning near-field optical microscopy. The influence of ion-irradiation dose has been studied in a pattern of sub-micrometre stripes. While the film thickness decreases monotonically with ion dose, the optical contrast rapidly increases to a maximum value and then decreases gradually. The results are discussed in terms of the competition between the effects of ion implantation and surface milling by the ion beam. The observed effects are important for uses of amorphous silicon carbide thin films as permanent archives in optical data storage applications.

To study some of the interfacial properties of PtSi/Si diodes, Schottky structures were fabricated on (100) crystalline silicon substrates by conventional thermal evaporation of Pt on Si followed by annealing at different temperatures (from 400 degrees C to 700 degrees C) to form PtSi. The PtSi/n-Si diodes, all yielded Schottky barrier (SB) heights that are remarkably temperature dependent. The temperature range (20-290 K) over which the I-V characteristics were measured in the present study is broader with a much lower limit (20 K), than what is usually reported in literature. These variations in the barrier height are adequately interpreted by introducing spatial inhomogeneity into the barrier potential with a Gaussian distribution having a mean barrier of 0.76 eV and a standard deviation of 30 meV. Multi-frequency capacitance-voltage measurements suggest that the barrier is primarily controlled by the properties of the silicide-silicon interface. The forward C-V characteristics, in particular, show small peaks at low frequencies that can be ascribed to interface states rather than to a series resistance effect.

Scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip-induced light emission from Au and Ag has been studied. Thin film samples similar to100nm thick were prepared by thermal evaporation at 0.5nm/s onto a room-temperature glass substrate to produce grains of 20-50nm in lateral dimension at the surface. Light emission from the samples in the STM was quasi-simultaneously recorded with the topography, at 1.8V tip bias and 3-40nA current, alternating pixel by pixel at the same bias. Typically, a surface scan range of 150 nm x 150 nm was surveyed. Au, W and PtIr tips were used.
Dielectric function of YBCO determined by attenuated total reflection in the mid-infrared (3,392 nm)

The mid-infrared optical response of c-axis thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta has been studied using Otto-configuration attenuated total reflectance. The measured reflectance-angle characteristics are dominated by a strong absorption feature due to the excitation of surface plasmons, and can be modeled to determine the a-b plane dielectric function. The results show that while epsilon(i,) and therefore sigma(r), are temperature independent, \epsilon(r)\ exhibits a moderate decrease with generalized Drude analysis shows that the plasma frequency is independent of temperature, but decreases with decreasing doping. The scattering rate increases with temperature, and also increases with decreasing doping, consistent with stronger coupling in the underdoped regime. The mass-enhancement is small but increases to 30-40% at delta = 0.6. Difficulties in reconciling the results with some current theories of high-T-c materials are discussed. Finally, the surface plasmon propagation lengths and penetration depths are shown to vary systematically with doping. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The overall quantum efficiency in surface plasmon (SP) enhanced Schottky barrier photodetectors is examined by considering both the external and internal yield. The external yield is considered through calculations of absorption and transmission of light in a configuration that allows reflectance minimization due to SP excitation. Following a Monte Carlo method, a procedure is presented to estimate the internal yield while taking into account the effect of elastic and inelastic scattering processes on excited carriers subsequent to photon absorption. The relative importance of internal photoemission and band-to-band contributions to the internal yield is highlighted along with the variation of the yield as a function of wavelength, metal thickness and other salient parameters of the detector. It is shown that structuring the top layers of a resonant cavity Schottky photodetector in a way that allows coupling between the wavevector of incident radiation and that of electron-collective oscillations (plasmons) at the surface of the metallic electrode leads to practically zero reflectance in the case of front illuminated devices. This is expected to result in a consequential enhancement in the quantum efficiency in these photodetectors. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Results are reported on the a-b plane dielectric function (epsilon) of thin-film c-axis NdBa2Cu3O7-delta with close to optimal oxygen doping (T-c similar to 90 K) in the mid-infrared (wavelength 3.392 mum) over the temperature range 85 K to 300 K. An attenuated total reflectance technique based on the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is used. The results show that \epsilon (r)\ decreases quasi-linearly with increasing temperature, while Ei is invariant with temperature to within experimental uncertainties. Representative values are epsilon = [epsilon (r) + i epsilon (i)] = (-12.9 +/- 0.6) + i(23.0 +/- 1.5) at T similar to 295 K and epsilon = (-15.7 +/- 0.7) + i(23.5 +/- 1.1) at T similar to 90 K. The raw data an interpreted in terms of the generalized Drude model which gives effective scattering rates (1/tau*) that increase with temperature from about 3800 cm(-1) at 90 K to about 4300 cm(-1) at 295 K. There are indications of a superlinear T-dependence in the scattering, 1/tau*: a fit to a function of the form 1/tau* = A + BTalpha gives alpha = 2.8 +/- 0.7. The effective plasma frequency, omega (p)*, with an average value of approximately 21 000 cm(-1) was independent of temperature.
