Shape stabilised phase change materials (SSPCMs) based on a high density poly(ethylene)(hv-HDPE) with high (H-PW, Tm = 56–58 °C) and low (L-PW, Tm = 18–23 °C) melting point paraffin waxes were readily prepared using twin-screw extrusion. The thermo-physical properties of these materials were assessed using a combination of techniques and their suitability for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) assessed. The melt processing temperature (160 °C) of the HDPE used was well below the onset of thermal decomposition of H-PW (220 °C), but above that for L-PW (130 °C), although the decomposition process extended over a range of 120 °C and the residence time of L-PW in the extruder was <30 s. The SSPCMs prepared had latent heats up to 89 J/g and the enthalpy values for H-PW in the respective blends decreased with increasing H-PW loading, as a consequence of co-crystallisation of H-PW and hv-HDPE. Static and dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed both waxes have a plasticisation effect on this HDPE. Irrespective of the mode of deformation (tension, flexural, compression) modulus and stress decreased with increased wax loading in the blend, but the H-PW blends were mechanically superior to those with L-PW.

This paper explored a new approach to prepare phase change microcapsules using carbon-based particles via Pickering emulsions for energy storage applications. Rice-husk-char, a by-product in biofuel production, containing 53.58 wt% of carbon was used as a model carbon-based material to encapsulate hexadecane. As a model phase change material, hexadecane was emulsified in aqueous suspensions of rice-husk-char nanoparticles. Water soluble polymers poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride) and poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) were used to fix the rice-husk-char nanoparticles on the emulsion droplets through layer-by-layer assembly to enhance the structural stability of the microcapsules. The microcapsules formed are composed of a thin shell encompassing a large core consisting of hexadecane. Thermal gravimetrical and differential scanning calorimeter analyses showed the phase change enthalpy of 80.9 kJ kg−1 or 120.0 MJ m−3. Design criteria of phase change microcapsules and preparation considerations were discussed in terms of desired applications. This work demonstrated possible utilisations of biomass-originated carbon-based material for thermal energy recovery and storage applications, which can be a new route of carbon capture and utilisation.

Thin lamellae were cut from bulk single crystal BaTiO3 using a Focused Ion Beam Microscope. They were then removed and transferred onto single crystal MgO substrates, so that their functional properties could be measured independent of the original host bulk ferroelectric. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of these isolated single crystal films was found to be strongly bulk-like, demonstrating a sharp Curie anomaly, as well as Curie-Weiss behaviour. In addition, the sudden change in the remanent polarisation as a function of temperature at TC was characteristic of a first order phase change. The work represents a dramatic improvement on that previously published by M. M. Saad, P. Baxter, R. M. Bowman, J. M. Gregg, F. D. Morrison & J. F. Scott, J. Phys: Cond. Matt., 16 L451-L456 (2004), as critical shortcomings in the original specimen geometry, involving potential signal contributions from bulk BaTiO3, have now been obviated. That the functional properties of single crystal thin film lamellae are comparable to bulk, and not like those of conventionally deposited heteroegenous thin film systems, has therefore been confirmed.

In this work, we have shown that a 100 MHz Love wave device can be used to determine whether room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are Newtonian fluids and have developed a technique that allows the determination of the density-viscosity product, rho eta of a Newtonian RTIL. In addition, a test for a Newtonian response was established by relating the phase change to insertion loss change. Five concentrations of a water-miscible RTIL and seven pure RTILs were measured. The changes in phase and insertion loss were found to vary linearly with the square root of the density-viscosity product for values up to (rho eta)(1/2) similar to 10 kg m(-2) s(-1/2). The square root of the density-viscosity product was deduced from the changes in either phase or insertion loss using glycerol as a calibration liquid. In both cases, the deduced values of rho eta agree well with those measured using viscosity and density meters. Miniaturization of the device, beyond that achievable with the lower-frequency quartz crystal microbalance approach, to measure smaller volumes is possible. The ability to fabricate Love wave and other surface acoustic wave sensors using planar metallization technologies gives potential for future integration into lab-on-a-chip analytical systems for characterizing ionic liquids.

We investigate an optical quantum memory scheme with V-type three-level atoms based on the controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB) technique. We theoretically show the possibility to store and retrieve a weak light pulse interacting with the two optical transitions of the system. This scheme implements a quantum memory for a polarization qubit - a single photon in an arbitrary polarization state - without the need of two spatially separated two-level media, thus offering the advantage of experimental compactness overcoming the limitations due to mismatching and unequal efficiencies that can arise in spatially separated memories. The effects of a relative phase change between the atomic levels, as well as of phase noise due to, for example, the presence of spurious electric and magnetic fields are analyzed.

The functional properties of two types of barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film capacitor structures were studied: one set of structures was made using pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and the other using chemical solution deposition. While initial observations on PLD films looking at the behavior of T-m (the temperature at which the maximum dielectric constant was observed) and T-c(*) (from Curie-Weiss analysis) suggested that the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition was progressively depressed in temperature as BST film thickness was reduced, further work suggested that this was not the case. Rather, it appears that the temperatures at which phase transitions occur in the thin films are independent of film thickness. Further, the fact that in many cases three transitions are observable, suggests that the sequence of symmetry transitions that occur in the thin films are the same as in bulk single crystals. This new observation could have implications for the validity of the theoretically produced thin film phase diagrams derived by Pertsev [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1988 (1998)] and extended by Ban and Alpay [J. Appl. Phys. 91, 9288 (2002)]. In addition, the fact that T-m measured for virgin films does not correlate well with the inherent phase transition behavior, suggests that the use of T-m alone to infer information about the thermodynamics of thin film capacitor behavior, may not be sufficient. Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) thin-film capacitor structures with various thicknesses, (50-1200 nm) and different strain conditions (on lanthanum strontium cobalt oxide La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 and strontium ruthenate SrRuO3 buffer layers) were made using pulsed laser deposition, and characterized by x-ray diffraction. The out-of-plane lattice parameter was followed as a function of temperature within the 100-300 K temperature interval. The phase sequence (cubic-tetragonal-orthorhombic-rhombohedral) known to exist in the bulk analog is shown to be strongly affected by both the stress conditions imposed by the buffer layer and the thickness of the BST film itself. Thus, no phase transition was found for the in-plane compressed BST films. On the stress-free BST films, on the contrary, more phase transitions were observed. It appeared that the complexity of structural phase transitions increased as the film thickness in this system was reduced.

The Curie-Weiss plots of reciprocal dielectric constant versus temperature, in Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films grown onto SrRuO3 lower electrodes by pulsed-laser deposition, show two minima below film thicknesses of 280 nm. This double minima implies possible mixed phases in the thin films. A graphical plot of capacitance for decreasing dc voltage versus that of increasing dc voltage shows a well-defined triangular shape for both Pb(Zr0.4Ti0.6)O-3 and SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films. However, for a 175-nm-thick Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin film, the plot shows an overlapping of two triangles, suggesting mixed phases. This graphical method appears to be effective in detecting structural subtleties in ferroelectric capacitors.

The kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) on Au/TiO2 and Pt-Sn/TiO2 thin films was studied in the temperature range 313-353 K and citral concentrations of 0.25-10.0 mol m(-3). The thin films were deposited onto the inner walls of silica capillaries with internal diameter of 250 mu m. First-order dependence on hydrogen pressure and near zero order dependence on citral concentration were observed for the initial rate of citral hydrogenation over the Pt-Sn/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 thin films. The Au/TiO2 catalyst prevents citronellal formation. The highest yield of unsaturated alcohols was obtained on the Pt-Sn/TiO2 film at a reaction temperature of 343 K, liquid residence time of 30 min and a citral conversion of 99%. PbZrO3/SrRuO3/SrTiO3 (100) epitaxial heterostructures with different thickness of the PbZrO3 (PZO) layer (d(PZO) similar to 5-160 nm) were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. The ultrathin PZO films (d(PZO) <= 10 nm) were found to possess a rhombohedral structure. On increasing the PZO film thickness, a bulk like orthorhombic phase started forming in the film with d(PZO) similar to 22 nm and became abundant in the thicker films. Nanobeam electron diffraction and room-temperature micro-Raman measurements revealed that the stabilization of the rhombohedral phase of PZO could be attributed to the epitaxial strain accommodated by the heterostructures. Room-temperature polarization vs electric field measurements performed on different samples showed characteristic double hysteresis loops of antiferroelectric materials accompanied by a small remnant polarization for the thick PZO films (dPZO >= 50 nm). The remnant polarization increased by reducing the PZO layer thickness, and a ferroelectric like hysteresis loop was observed for the sample with d(PZO) similar to 22 nm. Local ferroelectric properties measured by piezoresponse force microscopy also exhibited a similar thickness-dependent antiferroelectric-ferroelectric transition. Room-temperature electrical properties observed in the PZO thin films in correlation to their structural characteristics suggested that a ferroelectric rhombohedral phase could be stabilized in thin epitaxial PZO films experiencing large interfacial compressive stress.
Monodomain strained ferroelectric PbTiO(3) thin films: Phase transition and critical thickness study
Resumo:
This work demonstrates that instead of paraelectric PbTiO(3), completely c-oriented ferroelectric PbTiO(3) thin films were directly grown on (001)-SrTiO(3) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition with thickness up to 340 nm at a temperature well above the Curie temperature of bulk PbTiO(3). The influence of laser-pulse frequency, substrate-surface termination on growth, and functional properties were studied using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and piezoresponse force microscopy. At low growth rates (frequency 8 Hz) a domains were formed for film thickness above 20-100 nm. Due to coherency strains the Curie temperature (T(c)) of the monodomain films was increased approximately by 350 degrees C with respect to the T(c) of bulk PbTiO(3) even for 280-nm-thick films. Nonetheless, up to now this type of growth mode has been considered unlikely to occur since the Matthews-Blakeslee (MB) model already predicts strain relaxation for films having a thickness of only similar to 10 nm. However, the present work disputes the applicability of the MB model. It clarifies the physical reasons for the large increase in T(c) for thick films, and it is shown that the experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions based on the monodomain model of Pertsev et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1988 (1998)].

The objective of this work is an evaluation of quantitative measurements of piezoresponse force microscopy for nanoscale characterization of ferroelectric films. To this end, we investigate how the piezoresponse phase difference Delta Phi between c domains depends on the frequency omega of the applied ac field much lower than the cantilever first resonance frequency. The main specimen under study was a 102 nm thick film of Pb(Zr(0.2)Ti(0.8))O(3). For the sake of comparison, a 100 nm thick PbTiO(3) film was also used. From our measurements, we conclude a frequency dependent behavior Delta Phi similar to omega(-1), which can only be partially explained by the presence of adsorbates on the surface.
