Some superlinear fourth order elliptic equations are considered. A family of solutions is proved to exist and to concentrate at a point in the limit. The proof relies on variational methods and makes use of a weak version of the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. The existence and concentration of solutions are related to a suitable truncated equation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In a previous work El et al. (2006) [1] exact stable oblique soliton solutions were revealed in two-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger flow. In this work we show that single soliton solution can be expressed within the Hirota bilinear formalism. An attempt to build two-soliton solutions shows that the system is "close" to integrability provided that the angle between the solitons is small and/or we are in the hypersonic limit. Using a mathematical approach accessible to graduate students of physics and engineering, we show how solitons are solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Are also given references about the history of solitons in general, their fundamental properties and how they have found applications in optics and fiber-optic communications.

This paper is concerned with the existence of multi-bump solutions to a class of quasilinear Schrodinger equations in R. The proof relies on variational methods and combines some arguments given by del Pino and Felmer, Ding and Tanaka, and Sere.

We consider modifications of the nonlinear Schrodinger model (NLS) to look at the recently introduced concept of quasi-integrability. We show that such models possess an in finite number of quasi-conserved charges which present intriguing properties in relation to very specific space-time parity transformations. For the case of two-soliton solutions where the fields are eigenstates of this parity, those charges are asymptotically conserved in the scattering process of the solitons. Even though the charges vary in time their values in the far past and the far future are the same. Such results are obtained through analytical and numerical methods, and employ adaptations of algebraic techniques used in integrable field theories. Our findings may have important consequences on the applications of these models in several areas of non-linear science. We make a detailed numerical study of the modified NLS potential of the form V similar to (vertical bar psi vertical bar(2))(2+epsilon), with epsilon being a perturbation parameter. We perform numerical simulations of the scattering of solitons for this model and find a good agreement with the results predicted by the analytical considerations. Our paper shows that the quasi-integrability concepts recently proposed in the context of modifications of the sine-Gordon model remain valid for perturbations of the NLS model.

Feedback stabilization of an ensemble of non interacting half spins described by the Bloch equations is considered. This system may be seen as an interesting example for infinite dimensional systems with continuous spectra. We propose an explicit feedback law that stabilizes asymptotically the system around a uniform state of spin +1/2 or -1/2. The proof of the convergence is done locally around the equilibrium in the H-1 topology. This local convergence is shown to be a weak asymptotic convergence for the H-1 topology and thus a strong convergence for the C topology. The proof relies on an adaptation of the LaSalle invariance principle to infinite dimensional systems. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficiency of these feedback laws, even for initial conditions far from the equilibrium. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we study the continuity of invariant sets for nonautonomous infinite-dimensional dynamical systems under singular perturbations. We extend the existing results on lower-semicontinuity of attractors of autonomous and nonautonomous dynamical systems. This is accomplished through a detailed analysis of the structure of the invariant sets and its behavior under perturbation. We prove that a bounded hyperbolic global solutions persists under singular perturbations and that their nonlinear unstable manifold behave continuously. To accomplish this, we need to establish results on roughness of exponential dichotomies under these singular perturbations. Our results imply that, if the limiting pullback attractor of a nonautonomous dynamical system is the closure of a countable union of unstable manifolds of global bounded hyperbolic solutions, then it behaves continuously (upper and lower) under singular perturbations.

This work develops a computational approach for boundary and initial-value problems by using operational matrices, in order to run an evolutive process in a Hilbert space. Besides, upper bounds for errors in the solutions and in their derivatives can be estimated providing accuracy measures.

In this work, we are interested in the dynamic behavior of a parabolic problem with nonlinear boundary conditions and delay in the boundary. We construct a reaction-diffusion problem with delay in the interior, where the reaction term is concentrated in a neighborhood of the boundary and this neighborhood shrinks to boundary, as a parameter epsilon goes to zero. We analyze the limit of the solutions of this concentrated problem and prove that these solutions converge in certain continuous function spaces to the unique solution of the parabolic problem with delay in the boundary. This convergence result allows us to approximate the solution of equations with delay acting on the boundary by solutions of equations with delay acting in the interior and it may contribute to analyze the dynamic behavior of delay equations when the delay is at the boundary. In this paper, we establish the existence of many rotationally non-equivalent and nonradial solutions for the following class of quasilinear problems (p) {-Delta(N)u = lambda f(vertical bar x vertical bar, u) x is an element of Omega(r), u > 0 x is an element of Omega(r), u = 0 x is an element of Omega(r), where Omega(r) = {x is an element of R-N : r < vertical bar x vertical bar < r + 1}, N >= 2, N not equal 3, r >0, lambda > 0, Delta(N)u = div(vertical bar del u vertical bar(N-2)del u) is the N-Laplacian operator and f is a continuous function with exponential critical growth.

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of a family of steady-state solutions of a nonlinear reaction diffusion equation when some reaction and potential terms are concentrated in a e-neighborhood of a portion G of the boundary. We assume that this e-neighborhood shrinks to G as the small parameter e goes to zero. Also, we suppose the upper boundary of this e-strip presents a highly oscillatory behavior. Our main goal here was to show that this family of solutions converges to the solutions of a limit problem, a nonlinear elliptic equation that captures the oscillatory behavior. Indeed, the reaction term and concentrating potential are transformed into a flux condition and a potential on G, which depends on the oscillating neighborhood. A charged particle is considered in a complex external electromagnetic field. The field is a superposition of an Aharonov-Bohm field and some additional field. Here we describe all additional fields known up to the present time that allow exact solution of the Schrodinger equation in a complex field.

A reaction-diffusion equation with variable diffusivity and non-linear flux boundary condition is considered. The goal is to give sufficient conditions on the diffusivity function for nonexistence and also for existence of nonconstant stable stationary solutions. Applications are given for the main result of nonexistence.

A transmission problem involving two Euler-Bernoulli equations modeling the vibrations of a composite beam is studied. Assuming that the beam is clamped at one extremity, and resting on an elastic bearing at the other extremity, the existence of a unique global solution and decay rates of the energy are obtained by adding just one damping device at the end containing the bearing mechanism.
