The Gaussian probability closure technique is applied to study the random response of multidegree of freedom stochastically time varying systems under non-Gaussian excitations. Under the assumption that the response, the coefficient and the excitation processes are jointly Gaussian, deterministic equations are derived for the first two response moments. It is further shown that this technique leads to the best Gaussian estimate in a minimum mean square error sense. An example problem is solved which demonstrates the capability of this technique for handling non-linearity, stochastic system parameters and amplitude limited responses in a unified manner. Numerical results obtained through the Gaussian closure technique compare well with the exact solutions.

Data-flow analysis is an integral part of any aggressive optimizing compiler. We propose a framework for improving the precision of data-flow analysis in the presence of complex control-flow. W initially perform data-flow analysis to determine those control-flow merges which cause the loss in data-flow analysis precision. The control-flow graph of the program is then restructured such that performing data-flow analysis on the resulting restructured graph gives more precise results. The proposed framework is both simple, involving the familiar notion of product automata, and also general, since it is applicable to any forward data-flow analysis. Apart from proving that our restructuring process is correct, we also show that restructuring is effective in that it necessarily leads to more optimization opportunities. Furthermore, the framework handles the trade-off between the increase in data-flow precision and the code size increase inherent in the restructuring. We show that determining an optimal restructuring is NP-hard, and propose and evaluate a greedy strategy. The framework has been implemented in the Scale research compiler, and instantiated for the specific problem of Constant Propagation. On the SPECINT 2000 benchmark suite we observe an average speedup of 4% in the running times over Wegman-Zadeck conditional constant propagation algorithm and 2% over a purely path profile guided approach.

Monochloro-tetra-μ-aryl-carboxylatodiruthenium(III, II) compounds Ru2Cl (O2CAr)4 (Ar = -C6H5; -C6H4-p-OCH3), are prepared and characterized. The compounds have magnetic moments that correspond to three unpaired spins per dimer. The Rusingle bondRu bond order is 2.5 and the ground electronic configuration is σ2π4δ2(δ*π*)3. The visible spectral band is observed at ca 450 nm along with a shoulder near 580 nm in DMF solution. The compounds undergo a one-electron Ru(III)Ru(II) → Ru(II)Ru(II) quasi-reversible reduction in DMF near 0.0 V vs sce.

Analytical models of IEEE 802.11-based WLANs are invariably based on approximations, such as the well-known mean-field approximations proposed by Bianchi for saturated nodes. In this paper, we provide a new approach for modeling the situation when the nodes are not saturated. We study a State Dependent Attempt Rate (SDAR) approximation to model M queues (one queue per node) served by the CSMA/CA protocol as standardized in the IEEE 802.11 DCF. The approximation is that, when n of the M queues are non-empty, the attempt probability of the n non-empty nodes is given by the long-term attempt probability of n saturated nodes as provided by Bianchi's model. This yields a coupled queue system. When packets arrive to the M queues according to independent Poisson processes, we provide an exact model for the coupled queue system with SDAR service. The main contribution of this paper is to provide an analysis of the coupled queue process by studying a lower dimensional process and by introducing a certain conditional independence approximation. We show that the numerical results obtained from our finite buffer analysis are in excellent agreement with the corresponding results obtained from ns-2 simulations. We replace the CSMA/CA protocol as implemented in the ns-2 simulator with the SDAR service model to show that the SDAR approximation provides an accurate model for the CSMA/CA protocol. We also report the simulation speed-ups thus obtained by our model-based simulation.

Ternary vanadium sulfides, MxVS2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni), with Image , were prepared and studied. The Image and Image series are isostructural with V5S8 and V3S4, respectively, while compounds with Image appear to have the hexagonal Cr2S3 structure. Structures of NiV2S4 and NiV4S8 were refined from powder X-ray diffraction intensities. Magnetic and electrical properties reveal that M ions in these sulfides exist in the divalent state having localized moments, while the vanadium 3 d electrons are itinerant.

A recent theoretical model developed by Imparato et al. Phys of the experimentally measured heat and work effects produced by the thermal fluctuations of single micron-sized polystyrene beads in stationary and moving optical traps has proved to be quite successful in rationalizing the observed experimental data. The model, based on the overdamped Brownian dynamics of a particle in a harmonic potential that moves at a constant speed under a time-dependent force, is used to obtain an approximate expression for the distribution of the heat dissipated by the particle at long times. In this paper, we generalize the above model to consider particle dynamics in the presence of colored noise, without passing to the overdamped limit, as a way of modeling experimental situations in which the fluctuations of the medium exhibit long-lived temporal correlations, of the kind characteristic of polymeric solutions, for instance, or of similar viscoelastic fluids. Although we have not been able to find an expression for the heat distribution itself, we do obtain exact expressions for its mean and variance, both for the static and for the moving trap cases. These moments are valid for arbitrary times and they also hold in the inertial regime, but they reduce exactly to the results of Imparato et al. in appropriate limits. Octahedral Co2+ centers have been connected by mu(3)-OH and mu(2)-OH2 units forming [Co-4] clusters which are linked by pyrazine forming a two-dimensional network. The two-dimensional layers are bridged by oxybisbenzoate (OBA) ligands giving rise to a three-dimensional structure. The [Co-4] clusters bond with the pyrazine and the OBA results in a body-centered arrangement of the clusters, which has been observed for the first time. Magnetic studies reveal a noncollinear frustrated spin structure of the bitriangular cluster, resulting in a net magnetic moment of 1.4 mu B per cluster. For T > 32 K, the correlation length of the cluster moments shows a stretched-exponential temperature dependence typical of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model, which points to a quasi-2D XY behavior. At lower temperature and down to 14 K, the compound behaves as a soft ferromagnet and a slow relaxation is observed, with an energy barrier of ca. 500 K. Then, on further cooling, a hysteretic behavior takes place with a coercive field that reaches 5 Tat 4 K. The slow relaxation is assigned to the creation/annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs, which are the elementary excitations of a 2D XY spin system.

The quasi-aromatic property of metal chelates of thio-beta-diketones has been studied by reacting them with phenylisocyanate, where addition takes place at the gamma-CH in a stepwise manner. Mono-thiodiketonates of Ni(II), Pd(II), cu(II) and Co(III) and the dithio-acetylacetonate of Ni(II) react with phenylisocyanate to produce mono-, di- and triphenylamido [with cobalt (III) only] substituted derivatives. In the case of tris (ethylthioacetoacetato) cobalt (III), it is found that the reaction with phenylisocyanate gives two isomers, a chocolate coloured isomer in which the phenylamido carbonyl is not coordinated while the green coloured isomer has bonding through phenylemido carbonyl oxygen. The reactions of the thiodiketonates have been compared with those of beta-diketonates and beta-ketoiminates. The reaction products have been characterised by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, and electronic, IR and 1H NMR spectral studies.

VHF nighttime scintillations, recorded during a high solar activity period at a meridian chain of stations covering a magnetic latitude belt of 3°–21°N (420 km subionospheric points) are analyzed to investigate the influence of equatorial spread F irregularities on the occurrence of scintillation at latitudes away from the equator. Observations show that saturated amplitude scintillations start abruptly about one and a half hours after ground sunset and their onset is almost simultaneous at stations whose subionospheric points are within 12°N latitude of the magnetic equator, but is delayed at a station whose subionospheric point is at 21°N magnetic latitude by 15 min to 4 hours. In addition, the occurrence of postsunset scintillations at all the stations is found to be conditional on their prior occurrence at the equatorial station. If no postsunset scintillation activity is seen at the equatorial station, no scintillations are seen at other stations also. The occurrence of scintillations is explained as caused by rising plasma bubbles and associated irregularities over the magnetic equator and the subsequent mapping of these irregularities down the magnetic field lines to the F region of higher latitudes through some instantaneous mechanism; and hence an equatorial control is established on the generation of postsunset scintillation-producing irregularities in the entire low-latitude belt.

The simply supported rhombic plate under transverse load has received extensive attention from elasticians, applied mathematicians and engineers. All known solutions are based on approximate procedures. Now, an exact solution in a fast converging explicit series form is derived for this problem, by applying Stevenson's tentative approach with complex variables. Numerical values for the central deflexion and moments are obtained for various corner angles. The present solution provides a basis for assessing the accuracy of approximate methods for analysing problems of skew plates or domains.

Geometric constraints present in A2BO4 compounds with the tetragonal-T structure of K2NiF4 impose a strong pressure on the B---OII---B bonds and a stretching of the A---OI---A bonds in the basal planes if the tolerance factor is t congruent with RAO/√2 RBO < 1, where RAO and RBO are the sums of the A---O and B---O ionic radii. The tetragonal-T phase of La2NiO4 becomes monoclinic for Pr2NiO4, orthorhombic for La2CuO4, and tetragonal-T′ for Pr2CuO4. The atomic displacements in these distorted phases are discussed and rationalized in terms of the chemistry of the various compounds. The strong pressure on the B---OII---B bonds produces itinerant σ*x2−y2 bands and a relative stabilization of localized dz2 orbitals. Magnetic susceptibility and transport data reveal an intersection of the Fermi energy with the d2z2 levels for half the copper ions in La2CuO4; this intersection is responsible for an intrinsic localized moment associated with a configuration fluctuation; below 200 K the localized moment smoothly vanishes with decreasing temperature as the d2z2 level becomes filled. In La2NiO4, the localized moments for half-filled dz2 orbitals induce strong correlations among the σ*x2−y2 electrons above Td reverse similar, equals 200 K; at lower temperatures the σ*x2−y2 electrons appear to contribute nothing to the magnetic susceptibility, which obeys a Curie-Weiss law giving a μeff corresponding to S = 1/2, but shows no magnetic order to lowest temperatures. These surprising results are verified by comparison with the mixed systems La2Ni1−xCuxO4 and La2−2xSr2xNi1−xTixO4. The onset of a charge-density wave below 200 K is proposed for both La2CuO4 and La2NiO4, but the atomic displacements would be short-range cooperative in mixed systems. The semiconductor-metallic transitions observed in several systems are found in many cases to obey the relation Ea reverse similar, equals kTmin, where varrho = varrho0exp(−Ea/kT) and Tmin is the temperature of minimum resistivity varrho. This relation is interpreted in terms of a diffusive charge-carrier mobility with Ea reverse similar, equals ΔHm reverse similar, equals kT at T = Tmin.

The two-impurity Kondo problem is studied by use of perturbative scaling techniques. The physics is determined by the interplay between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the two impurity spins and the Kondo effect. In particular, for a strong ferromagnetic RKKY interaction the susceptibility exhibits three structures as the temperature is lowered, corresponding to the ferromagnetic locking together of the two impurity spins followed by a two-stage freezing out of their local moments by the conduction electrons due to the Kondo effect.

Sequential firings with fixed time delays are frequently observed in simultaneous recordings from multiple neurons. Such temporal patterns are potentially indicative of underlying microcircuits and it is important to know when a repeatedly occurring pattern is statistically significant. These sequences are typically identified through correlation counts. In this paper we present a method for assessing the significance of such correlations. We specify the null hypothesis in terms of a bound on the conditional probabilities that characterize the influence of one neuron on another. This method of testing significance is more general than the currently available methods since under our null hypothesis we do not assume that the spiking processes of different neurons are independent. The structure of our null hypothesis also allows us to rank order the detected patterns. We demonstrate our method on simulated spike trains.
