The electrical activation energy and optical band-gap of GeSe and GeSbSe thin films prepared by flash evaporation on to glass substrates have been determined. The conductivities of the films were found to be given by Image , the activation energy Ea being 0.53 eV and 0.40 eV for GeSe and GeSbSe respectively. The optical absorption constant α near the absorption edge could be described by Image from which the optical band-gaps E0 were found to be 1.01 eV for GeSe and 0.67 eV for GeSbSe at 300°K. At 110°K the corresponding values of E0 were 1.07 eV and 0.735 eV respectively. The significance of these values is discussed in relation to those of other amorphous semiconductors.

In an attempt to study the factor(s) that regulates production of nychthemeral testosterone surges in adult male bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata), serum levels of testosterone, LH, FSH, and prolactin were monitored during a 24 h period. Only prolactin showed a significant increment in its levels coincident with that of the testosterone surge. The relationship between LH and testosterone production was studied by 1) observing the responsiveness of testes, in terms of testosterone production, to one or two injections of oLH (1 mg/injection) given 12 h apart at 0900 and 2100 h; and 2) monitoring the effect on testicular testosterone production of LH antiserum injection given at 1000, 1700, and 2100 h. That each LH injection brought about an increment in testosterone level of equal magnitude suggests that the difference in responsiveness of the testes to unchanging levels of LH at morning and night hours is not due to any alteration in substrate availability at the two time intervals. The LH antiserum experiments indicate that irrespective of the time of its administration the nocturnal surge of testosterone, which normally occurs at 2200 h, is blocked. While the antiserum prevents a rise in testosterone level, it appears not to influence basal testosterone production. The results further show that even at 2100 h, when surge testosterone production is already initiated, the testis is still highly sensitive to lack of LH, antiserum injection bringing about within 2 h a significant reduction in testosterone levels (by 69% in experimentals vs 11% in controls).

Thermal behaviour of ammonium perchlorate-aluminium composites is studied using differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Electrical resistivity studies throw light on the mechanism of ammonium perchlorate decomposition at different aluminium contents. The differences observed in burning behaviour by earlier authors is explained in terms of porosity and thermal conductivity of the composite.

The paper investigates the cause for the difference between differential scanning calorimetric results and mass spectrometric studies on polystyrene (PS) ammonium perchlorate (AP) propellants as related to the method of preparation of the propellant and the difference in experimental conditions by the use of mass spectrometry. Sufficient time is given for the product sublimates to interact with each other and attain equilibrium. It is shown that the propellant decomposition is a nonadditive phenomenon and that even a physical mixture of AP and PS does not yield additive decomposition products of its components. Results on the identification of a yellow compound containing chlorine in the bulk of the propellant suggest a condensed phase reaction. The occurrence of the reaction in the porous condensed phase of the propellant may explain the larger exothermicity of the propellant compared to the additive heats of decomposition of its components.

Differential scanning calorimetric studies on ammonium perchlorate have been carried out. The enthalpy values for the phase transition endotherm and the two exotherms have been reported in the present communication. A new method has been developed for the estimation of kinetic parameters from DSC the mograms. The values for activation energy as calculated by the above method for low temperature and high temperature exotherms are in close agreement with literature values. The present studies also confirm the presence of small exothermic peaks at the initial stages of high temperature exotherm. Explanation for the same has been given.

The effect of past mechanical history on the subsequent thermal decomposition kinetics of sodium, potassium, rubidium and caesium perchlorates, has been investigated. At low temperatures the decomposition of all these salts is significantly sensitized by pre-compression. At high temperatures, however, prior compression results in a lowered decomposition rate in the case of potassium, rubidium and caesium perchlorates and in an increase in the thermal reactivity of sodium perchlorate. The high temperature behaviour is shown to be an indirect consequence of the low temperature behaviour. The difference in behaviour between sodium perchlorate and the other alkali metal perchlorates is explained on the basis of the stability of the respective chlorates, formed during the low temperature decomposition. This is substantiated by experiments which show that the addition of sodium chlorate to sodium perchlorate brings about a sensitization while potassium perchlorate admixed with potassium chlorate results in a desensitization at high temperatures.

The explosive sensitivity of methylammonium perchlorates has been investigated by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, mass spectrometry and explosion delay experiments. The decomposition temperature of these compounds increases in the order CH3NH3ClO4>(CH3)2NH2ClO4>(CH3)3NHClO4. The activation energy shows the reverse order, indicating thereby that the stability increases with increasing substitution. Mass spectrometric investigation, however, suggests an increasing reactivity with increasing substitution. A possible explanation for such behaviour is proposed. It appears that explosion delay is correlated with thermal decomposition and impact sensitivity.

A simple method of calculating the elemental stoichiometric coefficient, φe has been developed, which can easily be applied to multicomponent fuel-oxidizer compositions. The method correctly predicts whether a mixture is fuel lean, fuel rich, or stoichiometrically balanced. The total composition of oxidizing (or reducing) elements of the mixture appears to be related to the thermochemistry of the system. For the reaction of ammonium perchlorate and an organic fuel the heat of reaction varies linearly with the total composition of oxidizing elements. The physical significance of such a correlation based on thermochemical reasoning is highlighted in the paper.

Hydrazinium monoperchlorate (HP-1) has been shown to decompose thermally in the solid state according to the chemical equation: 5N2H5CIO4 = 4NH4CIO4+1HCI+3N2+4H2O The activation energy for the evolution of HCl as determined mass spectrometrically is 8.05 kcal mol−1 in the temperature range of 80 to 120°C. The rate of decomposition is seen to be altered by doping HP-1 with small concentrations of SO2−4, Ca2+ and Al3+.

The thermal decomposition of sodium azide has been studied in the temperature range 240–360°C in vacuum and under pressure of an inert gas, argon. The results show that the decomposition is partial 360°C. From the observations made in the present work, namely: (i) the decomposition is incomplete both under vacuum and inert gas; (ii) mass spectrometric studies do not reveal any decrease in the intensity of the background species, CO+2, CO+, H2O+, and (iii) sodium metal remains in the ‘free state’ as seen by the formation of a metallic mirror at temperatures above 300°C, it has been argued that the partial nature of decompostion is due to the confinement of the decomposition to intermosaic regions within the lattice.

The thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate based solid composite propellant using carboxyl terminated polybutadiene as binder has been studied employing thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis techniques. The thermal decomposition characteristics of the propellant have been found to be quite similar to those of pure ammonium perchlorate with activation energy, 32 Kcal/mole and 60 Kcal/mole respectively in the low and high temperature regions. The effect of the sample size and shape on the thermal decomposition has also been evaluated.

The ultraviolet induced photodecomposition of ammonium oxalate has been studied. The rate-time plots show an initial deceleration region which leads to a final constant value. The intensity dependence of the photorate can be represented by an equation of the type R = AI + BP. The photolysis was found to be sensitized by precompression and desensitized by ageing. Similarly the photolytic rate of ammonium oxalate crystallized from solutions containing phosphate ion and chloride ion impurity showed a sensitization and desensitization, respectively.

The thermal decomposition of methylammonium perchlorate (MAP) has been studied under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. Differential thermal analysis of MAP showed, in addition to the exotherm due to decomposition, another exotherm at 408° which was observed for the first time. Chemical analysis and the infrared spectrum of the residue left behind after the decomposition proved it to contain NH4ClO4. The results have been explained on the basis of a methyl group transfer in addition to proton transfer in the decomposition process.
