We propose a simple single-layer magnetic microtrap configuration which can trap an array of magnetically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The configuration consists of two series of parallel wires perpendicular to each other and all of the crossing points are cut off for maintaining the uniformity of the current. We analyse the trapping potential, the position of trapping centres and the uniformity of the array of the traps. The trapping depth and trapping frequency with different parameters are also calculated. Lastly, the effect of the cut-off crossing points, dissipate power, chip production are introduced concisely.

A simple and practical model is used to analyse the influence of substrate surface defect on the optical characteristics of a single-layer coating. A single-layer coating is prepared and its optical properties are fitted. Some explanations for the origin of the transition layer are presented. It is concluded that there is a transition layer forming between the substrate and coating, which is attributed to substrate surface defects, and its refractive index change is nearly of linearity.

HfO2 single layers, 800 run high-reflective (HR) coating, and 1064 ran HR coating were prepared by electron-beam evaporation. The laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) and damage morphologies of these samples were investigated with single-pulse femtosecond and nanosecond lasers. It is found that the LIDT of the HfO2 single layer is higher than the HfO2-SiO2 HR coating in the femtosecond regime, while the situation is opposite in the nanosecond regime. Different damage mechanisms are applied to study this phenomenon. Damage morphologies of all samples due to different laser irradiations are displayed. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Field emission (FE) from a single-layer ultra-thin semiconductor film cathode (SUSC) on a metal substrate has been investigated theoretically. The self-consistent quantum FE model is developed by synthetically considering the energy band bending and electron scattering. As a typical example, we calculate the FE properties of ultra-thin A1N film with an adjustable film thickness from 1 to 10 nm. The calculated results show that the FE characteristic is evidently modulated by varying the film thickness, and there is an optimum thickness of about 3 nm. Furthermore, a four-step FE mechanism is suggested such that the distinct FE current of a SUSC is rooted in the thickness sensitivity of its quantum structure, and the optimum FE properties of the SUSC should be attributed to the change in the effective potential combined with the attenuation of electron scattering.

Tunable biaxial stresses, both tensile and compressive, are applied to a single layer graphene by utilizing piezoelectric actuators. The Gruneisen parameters for the phonons responsible for the D, G, 2D and 2D' peaks are studied. The results show that the D peak is composed of two peaks, unambiguously revealing that the 2D peak frequency (omega(2D)) is not exactly twice that of the D peak (omega(D)). This finding is confirmed by varying the biaxial strain of the graphene, from which we observe that the shift of omega(2D)/2 and omega(D) are different. The employed technique allows a detailed study of the interplay between the graphene geometrical structures and its electronic properties.

Contacting mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to measure the In0.asGao.65As/GaAs epilayer grown at low temperature (460°C). Unlike the normal layer-by-layer growth (FvdM mode) or self-organized islands growth (SK mode) ,samples grown under 460 C are found to be large islands with atomic thick terraces. AFM measurements reveale near one monolayer high steps. This kind of growth is good between FvdM and SK growth modes and can be used to understand the evolution of strained epitaxy from FvdM to SK mode.

We realized an organic electrical memory device with a simple structure based on single-layer pentacene film embedded between Al and ITO electrodes. The optimization of the thickness and deposition rate of pentacene resulted in a reliable device with an on/off current ratio as high as nearly 10(6), which was two orders of magnitude higher than previous results, and the storage time was more than 576 h. The current transition process is attributed to the formation and damage of the Interface dipole at different electric fields, in which the current conduction showed a transition from ohmic conductive current to Fowler-Nordheim tunneling current. After the transition from ON- to OFF-state, the device tended to remain in the OFF-State even when the applied voltage was removed, which indicated that the device was very promising for write-once read-many-times memory.

We demonstrated in this paper an electrospinning technique could be employed to prepare the single layer macroporous films and fibrous networks of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). A crucial element using electrospinning on the development of these electrospun structures was to shorten the distance of from the needle tip to the collector (L), which resulted in the bond of the wet fibers deposited on the collector at the junctions. The morphologies and average pore size of electrospun structures of PVA were mainly predominated by L and the time of collecting wet fibers on the collector. In addition, experimental results showed that an increase of the PVA concentration or a decrease of the applied voltage could also diminish slightly the average pore size of electrospun productions. Furthermore, a 60 degrees C absolute ethanol soak to PVA electrospun production led them to be able to stabilize in water for 1 month against disintegration. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the 60 degrees C ethanol soak enhanced the degree of crystallinity of PVA production. The structural characteristic of macroporous films and networks in combination with their easy processability suggests potential utility in issue engineering applications.

In this paper, we study the effects of electrical annealing at different voltages on the performance of organic light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diodes studied here are single-layer devices based on a conjugated dendrimer doped with 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole as the emissive layer. We find that these devices can be annealed electrically by applying a voltage. This process reduces the turn-on voltage and enhances the brightness and efficiency. We obtained an external electroluminescence quantum efficiency of 0.07% photon/electron and a brightness of 2900 cd m(-2) after 12.4 V electrical annealing, which are about 6 times and 9 times higher than un-annealing devices, respectively. The improved luminance and efficiency are attributed to the presence of a space charge field near the electrodes caused by charging of traps.

The morphology of materials resulting from laser irradiation of the single-layer and the multilayer amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films using 120 fs pulses at 800 nm was observed using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. For the single-layer film, the center of the irradiated spot is depression and the border is protrusion, however, for the multilayer film, the center morphology changes from a depression to a protrusion as the increase of the energy. The crystallization threshold fluence of the single-layer and the multilayer film is 22 and 23 mJ/cm(2), respectively. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Self-organized InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by photoluminescence (PL). For both single- and multi-layer QDs, PL intensity of the first excited state is larger than that of the ground state at 15 K. Conversely, at room temperature (RT), PL intensity of the first excited state is smaller than that of the ground state. This result is explained by the phonon bottleneck effect. To the ground state, the PL intensities of the multi-layer QDs are larger than that of the single-layer QDs at 15 K, while the intensities are smaller than that of the single-layer QDs at RT. This is due to the defects in the multi-layer QD samples acting as the nonradiative recombination centers. The inter-diffusion of Ga and In atoms in the growth process of multi-layer QDs results in the PL blueshift of the ground state and broadening of the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), which can be avoided by decreasing the spacers' growth temperature. At the spacers' growth temperature of 520degreesC, we have prepared the 5-layer QDs which emit near 1.3 mum with a FWHM of 31.7 meV at RT, and 27.9 meV at 77 K. The size and shape Evolution of self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) influenced by 2.0-ML InAs seed layer has been systematically investigated for 2.0, 2.5, and 2.9-ML deposition on GaAs(1 0 0) substrate. Based on comparisons with the evolution of InAs islands on single layer samples at late growth stage, the bimodal size distribution of InAs islands at 2.5-ML InAs coverage and the formation of larger InAs quantum dots at 2.9-ML deposition have been observed on the second InAs layer. The further cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy measurement indicates the larger InAs QDs: at 2.9-ML deposition on the second layer are free of dislocation. In addition, the interpretations for the size and shape evolution of InAs/GaAs QDs on the second layer will be presented. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All lights reserved.
