A simple and practical model is used to analyse the influence of substrate surface defect on the optical characteristics of a single-layer coating. A single-layer coating is prepared and its optical properties are fitted. Some explanations for the origin of the transition layer are presented. It is concluded that there is a transition layer forming between the substrate and coating, which is attributed to substrate surface defects, and its refractive index change is nearly of linearity.

Nanocrystalline Ge embedded in amorphous silicon dioxide matrix was fabricated by oxidizing hydrogenated amorphous Si/hydrogenated amorphous Ge (a-Si:H/a-Ge:H) multilayers. The structures before and after oxidation were systematically investigated. The orange-green light emission was observed at room temperature and the luminescence peak was located at 2.2 eV. The size dependence in the photoluminescence peak energy was not observed and the luminescence intensity was increased gradually with oxidation time. The origin for this visible light emission is discussed. In contrast to the simple quantum effect model, the surface defect states of nanocrystalline Ge are believed to play an important role in radiative recombination process. ZrO2 thin films were prepared on BK7 glass substrates by electron beam evaporation deposition method. The influence of deposition rate varying from 1.2 to 6.3 nm s(-1) on surface morphology and other properties of ZrO2 films were examined. With increasing deposition rate, the surface defect density increased. The decrease in half width at full maximum in X-ray diffraction pattern with deposition rate indicates an increase in crystal dimension with increasing deposition rate. Electron beam deposited ZrO2 films are known to be inhomogeneous. From the change of the peak transmittance value, it can be deduced that the inhomogeneity of ZrO2 films strengthened gradually with increasing deposition rate. The type of surface defects changed from nodules to craters when the deposition rate was high enough.

The interaction of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (generations 1-7) with supported bilayer lipid membranes was studied by cyclic votammetry and ac impedance. It is shown that the dendrimers (generations 4-6) can induce defects in the Pt-electrode-supported bilayer lipid membrane. The ability of dendrimers to induce defects was dependent on their shapes and surface charge. The results are consistent with a change in the morphology of the dendrimers from an open, branched structure for generations 1-4 to a closed, increasingly compact surface for generations 5-7.

abstract {The optical property, structure, surface properties (roughness and defect density) and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of TiO2 films deposited by electronic beam (EB) evaporation of TiO2 (rutile), TiO2 (anatase) and TiO2 + Ta2O5 composite materials are comparatively studied. All films show the polycrystalline anatase TiO2 structure. The loose sintering state and phase transformation during evaporating TiO2 anatase slice lead to the high surface defect density, roughness and extinction coefficient, and low LIDT of films. The TiO2 + Ta2O5 composite films have the lowest extinction coefficient and the highest LIDT among all samples investigated. Guidance of selecting materials for high LIDT laser mirrors is given.}

The morphological defects and uniformity of 4H-SiC epilayers grown by hot wall CVD at 1500 degrees C on off-oriented (0001) Si faces are characterized by atomic force microscope, Nomarski optical microscopy, and Micro-Raman spectroscopy. Typical morphological defects including triangular defects, wavy steps, round pits, and groove defects are observed in mirror-like SiC epilayers. The preparation of the substrate surface is necessary for the growth of high-quality 4H-SiC epitaxial layers with low-surface defect density under optimized growth conditions. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Terbium ions were successfully incorporated in nano-sized zinc oxide particles with a doping concentration up to 3% by using a wet chemical route. Four narrow emission peaks of Tb3+ ions and a broad emission band of the surface states on ZnO nano-hosts were observed for all Tb-doped nanoparticles. Relaxation of carriers from excited states of ZnO hosts to rare earth (RE) dopants is disclosed by the fact that the emission intensity of Tb3+ centers increases with increased Tb content at the expense of the emission from surface defect states in ZnO matrix. The photoluminescence of porous silicon can be modified sensitively by surface adsorption of different kinds of molecules. A quite different effects of 9-cyanoanthracene and anthracene adsorption on the photoluminescence of porous silicon were observed. The adsorption of 9-cyanoanthracene induced the photoluminescence enhancement, while anthracene adsorption resulted in photoluminescent quenching. An explanation of the interaction of adsorbates with surface defect sites of porous silicon was suggested and discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Methyl radicals are generated by pyrolysis of azomethane, and the condition for achieving neat adsorption on Cu(110) is described for studying their chemisorption and reaction characteristics. The radical-surface system is examined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. It is observed that a small fraction of impinging CH3 radicals decompose into methylene possibly on surface defect sites. This type of CH2 radical has no apparent effect on CH3(ads) surface chemistry initiated by dehydrogenation to form active CH2(ads) followed by chain reactions to yield high-mass alkyl products. All thermal desorption products, such as H-2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, and C3H6, are detected with a single desorption peak near 475 K. The product yields increase with surface coverage until saturation corresponding to 0.50 monolayer of CH3(ads). The mass distribution is, however, invariant with initial CH3(ads) coverage, and all desorbed species exhibit first-order reaction kinetics. LEED measurement reveals a c(2 x 2) adsorbate structure independent of the amount of gaseous exposure. This strongly suggests that the radicals aggregate into close-packed two-dimensional islands at any exposure. The islanding behavior can be correlated with the reaction kinetics and is deemed to be essential for the chain propagation reactions. Some relevant aspects of the CH3/Cu(111) system are also presented. The new results are compared with those of prior studies employing methyl halides as radical sources. Major differences are found in the product distribution and desorption kinetics, and these are attributed to the influence of surface halogen atoms present in those earlier investigations.

Phase-locked oxide-confined ring-defect photonic crystal vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is presented. The coupled-mode theory is employed to illustrate the two supermodes of the device, in-phase and out-of-phase supermode. Experimental results verify the two supermodes by the characteristics of the spectra and the far field patterns. At the lower current, only the out-of-phase supermode is excited, whereas under the higher current, the in-phase supermode also appears at the shorter wavelength range. In addition, the measured spectral separation between the two supermodes agrees well with the theoretical result.

A new-type silicon material, silicon on defect layer (SODL) was proved to have a very high quality surface microstructure which is necessary for commercially feasible high-density very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI). The structure of the SODL material was viewed by transmission electron microscopy. The SODL material was also proved to have a buried defect layer with an insulating resistivity of 5.7 x 10(10) OMEGA-cm.

By introducing the scattering probability of a subsurface defect (SSD) and statistical distribution functions of SSD radius, refractive index, and position, we derive an extended bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) from the Jones scattering matrix. This function is applicable to the calculation for comparison with measurement of polarized light-scattering resulting from a SSD. A numerical calculation of the extended BRDF for the case of p-polarized incident light was performed by means of the Monte Carlo method. Our numerical results indicate that the extended BRDF strongly depends on the light incidence angle, the light scattering angle, and the out-of-plane azimuth angle. We observe a 180 degrees symmetry with respect to the azimuth angle. We further investigate the influence of the SSD density, the substrate refractive index, and the statistical distributions of the SSD radius and refractive index on the extended BRDF. For transparent substrates, we also find the dependence of the extended BRDF on the SSD positions. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.
