On the metalorganic chemical vapour deposition growth of AlN, by adjusting H-2+N-2 mixture gas components, we can gradually control island dimension. During the Volmer - Weber growth, the 2-dimensional coalescence of the islands induces an intrinsic tensile stress. Then, this process can control the in-plane stress: with the N-2 content increasing from 0 to 3 slm, the in-plane stress gradually changes from 1.5 GPa tensile stress to - 1.2GPa compressive stress. Especially, with the 0.5 slm N-2 + 2.5 slm H-2 mixture gas, the in-plane stress is only 0.1 GPa, which is close to the complete relaxation state. Under this condition, this sample has good crystal and optical qualities.

ZnO thin films were grown on single-crystal gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) and sapphire (0001) substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The structural, optical and electrical properties of ZnO films were investigated. The results show that LAO is more suitable for fabricating ZnO films than sapphire substrate and the highest-quality ZnO film was attained on LAO at the substrate temperature of 550 degrees C. However, when the substrate temperature rises to 700 degrees C, lithium would diffuse from the substrate (LAO) into ZnO film which makes ZnO film on LAO becomes polycrystalline without preferred orientation, the stress in ZnO film increases dominantly and the resistivity of the film decreases exponentially. The mechanism of improving 1064 nm, 12 ns laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of TiO2/SiO2 high reflectors (HR) prepared by electronic beam evaporation from 5.1 to 13.1 J/cm(2) by thermal annealing is discussed. Through optical properties, structure and chemical composition analysis, it is found that the reduced atomic non-stoichiometric defects are the main reason of absorption decrease and LIDT rise after annealing. A remarkable increase of LIDT is found at 300 degrees C annealing. The refractive index and film inhomogeneity rise, physical thickness decrease, and film stress changes from compress stress to tensile stress due to the structure change during annealing. The close form solutions of deflections and curvatures for a film-substrate composite structure with the presence of gradient stress are derived. With the definition of more precise kinematic assumption, the effect of axial loading due to residual gradient stress is incorporated in the governing equation. The curvature of film-substrate with the presence of gradient stress is shown to be nonuniform when the axial loading is nonzero. When the axial loading is zero, the curvature expressions of some structures derived in this paper recover the previous ones which assume the uniform curvature. Because residual gradient stress results in both moment and axial loading inside the film-substrate composite structure, measuring both the deflection and curvature is proposed as a safe way to uniquely determine the residual stress state inside a film-substrate composite structure with the presence of gradient stress.

A 5.35-mu m-thick ZnO film is grown by chemical vapour deposition technique on a sapphire (0001) substrate with a GaN buffer layer. The surface of the ZnO film is smooth and shows many hexagonal features. The full width at half maximum of ZnO (0002) omega-rocking curve is 161 arcsec, corresponding to a high crystal quality of the ZnO film. From the result of x-ray diffraction theta - 2. scanning, the stress status in ZnO film is tensile, which is supported by Raman scattering measurement. The reason of the tensile stress in the ZnO film is analysed in detail. The lattice mismatch and thermal mismatch are excluded and the reason is attributed to the coalescence of grains or islands during the growth of the ZnO film.

The effect of the N/Al ratio of AlN buffers on the optical and crystal quality of GaN films, grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on Si(111) substrates, has been investigated. By optimizing the N/Al ratio during the AlN buffer, the threading dislocation density and the tensile stress have been decreased. High-resolution X-ray diffraction exhibited a (0002) full-width at half-maximum as low as 396 acrsec. The variations of the tensile stress existing in the GaN films were approved by the redshifts of the donor bound exiton peaks in the low-temperature photoluminescence measurement at 77 K. The biaxial piezospectroscopic coefficient (i.e., the rate of spectral shift with stress) of the electrostimulated near-band-gap luminescence of gallium nitride (GaN) was determined as Pi=-25.8 +/- 0.2 meV/GPa. A controlled biaxial stress field was applied on a hexagonal GaN film, epitaxially grown on (0001) sapphire using a ball-on-ring biaxial bending jig, and the spectral shift of the electrostimulated near-band-gap was measured in situ in the scanning electron microscope. This calibration method can be useful to overcome the lack of a bulk crystal of relatively large size for more conventional uniaxial bending calibrations, which has so far hampered the precise determination of the piezospectroscopic coefficient of GaN. The main source of error involved with the present calibration method is represented by the selection of appropriate values for the elastic stiffness constants of both film and substrate. The ball-on-ring calibration method can be generally applied to directly determine the biaxial-stress dependence of selected cathodoluminescence bands of epilayer/substrate materials without requiring separation of the film from the substrate. Residual stress and its gradient through the thickness are among the most important properties of as-deposited films. Recently, a new mechanism based on a revised Thomas-Fermi-Dirac (TFD) model was proposed for the origin of intrinsic stress in solid film

The metal thin film delamination along metal/ceramic interface in the case of large scale yielding is studied by employing the strain gradient plasticity theory and the material microscale effects are considered. Two different fracture process models are used in this study to describe the nonlinear delamination phenomena for metal thin films. A set of experiments have been done on the mechanism of copper films delaminating from silica substrates, based on which the peak interface separation stress and the micro-length scale of material, as well as the dislocation-free zone size are predicted.

A multiscale technique that combines an atomistic description of the interfacial (near) region with a coarse-grained (continuum) description of the far regions of the solid substrates is proposed. The new hybrid technique, which represents an advance over a previously proposed dynamically-constrained hybrid atomistic-coarse-grained treatment (Wu et al.J. Chem. Phys., 120, 6744, 2004), is applied to a two-dimensional model tribological system comprising planar substrates sandwiching a monolayer film. Shear–stress profiles (shear stress versus strain) computed by the new hybrid technique are in excellent agreement with “exact” profiles (i.e. those computed treating the whole system at the atomic scale).

The curvature-stress relation is studied for a film-substrate bilayer with the effect of interfacial slip and compared with that of an ideal interface without interfacial slip. The interfacial slip together with the dimensions, elastic and interfacial properties of the film and substrate layers can cause a significant deviation of curvature-stress relation from that with an ideal interface. The interfacial slip also results in the so-called free edge effect that the stress, constraint force, and curvature vary dramatically around the free edges. The constant curvature as predicted by Stoney's formula and the Timoshenko model of an ideal interface is no longer valid for a bilayer with a nonideal interface. The models with the assumption of an ideal interface can also lead to an erroneous evaluation on the true stress state inside a bilayer with a nonideal interface. The extended Stoney's formula incorporating the effects of both the layer dimensions and interfacial slip is presented.

Cohesive zone characterizations of the interface between metal film and ceramic substrate at micro- and nano-scales are performed in the present research. At the nano-scale, a special potential for special material interface (Ag/MgO) is adopted to investigate the interface separation mechanism by using MD simulation, and stress-separation relationship will be obtained. At the micro-scale, peeling experiment is performed for the Al film/Al2O3 substrate system with an adhesive layer at the interface. Adhesive is a mixture of epoxy and polyimide with mass ratio 1:1, by which a brittle cohesive property is obtained. The relationships between energy release rate, the film thickness and the adhesive layer thickness are measured during the steady-state peeling. The experimental result has a similar trend as modeling result for a weak adhesion interface case.

A method was devised to evaluate the adhesion between a film and a substrate. A front-end coated bullet is accelerated by a gas gun and hits the substrate of the specimen under test. The impact generates a compressive stress pulse that propagates toward the film. After transmission through the interface, part of the pulse is reflected on the free surface of the film, and tensile stress arises at the film-substrate interface, possibly inducing debonding of the film. This dynamic process was demonstrated analytically and simulated numerically by the finite element method. The results validate the initial concept and lay the foundation for further optimization of this method.
