Resonant cavity modes in a torus with elliptical cross section are studied by means of a direct variational method. The nonlinear effects of toroidicity and ellipticity on the frequency of the basic mode are analyzed simply and systematically without the restriction of linear theory. It is shown that the toroidicity effect on the m = 0 transverse magnetic mode is less-than-or-equal-to 11%. The frequency of the mode shifts approximately 11-29% when the elongation of the cross section changes from 1 to 2. The effects of toroidicity and ellipticity differ for each resonant mode.

This paper describes the design and fabrication process of a two-dimensional GaAs-based photonic crystal nanocavity and analyzes the optical characterization of cavity modes at room temperature. Single InAs/InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) layer was embedded in a GaAs waveguide layer grown on an Al0.7Ga0.3As layer and GaAs substrate. The patterning of the structure and the membrane release were achieved by using electron-beam lithography, reaction ion etching, inductively coupled plasma etching and selective wet etching. The micro-luminescence spectrum is recorded from the fabricated nanocavities, and it is found that some high-order cavity modes are clearly observed besides the lowest-order resonant mode is exhibited in spite of much high rate of nonradiative recombination. The variance of resonant modes is also discussed as a function of r/a ratio and will be used in techniques aimed to improve the probability of achieving spectral coupling of a single QD to a cavity mode.

The theoretical analysis and experimental measurement on the incident angle dependence of quantum efficiency of GaAs based resonant cavity enhanced (RCE) photodetector is presented. By changing the angle of incoming light, about 40 nm wavelength variation of peak quantum efficiency is obtained. The peak quantum efficiency and optical bandwidth at different mode corresponding to different angle incidence is characterized with different absorption dependence on wavelength. The convenient angle tuning of resonant mode will be helpful to relax the strict constraint of RCE photodetector to light source with narrow emission spectrum such applications in space optical detections and communications.

In this paper, we introduced the dressed exciton model of the semiconductor micro-cavity device. In the semiconductor micro cavity of vertical-cavity surface-emission device, the excitons first coupled with the cavity through an intra-electromagnetic field and formed the dressed excitons. Then these dressed excitons decayed into the vacuum cavity optical mode, as a multiparticle process. Through the quantum electrodynamics method, the dipole emission density and system energy decayed equation were obtained. And it was predicted that the excitons decay into a very narrow mode when the exciton-cavity coupling becomes strong enough.

We report the generation of 207-fs pulses with 1.2mW average power at 1036 nm directly from a passively mode-locked Yb-doped fibre laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror for mode-locking and pairs of diffraction gratings for intracavity dispersion compensation. These results imply a 4-fold reduction in pulse duration over previously reported figure-of-eight cavity passively mode-locked Yb-doped fibre lasers. Stable pulse trains are produced at the fundamental repetition rate of the resonator, 24.0MHz. On the other hand, this laser offers a cleaner spectrum and greater stability and is completely self-starting.

The microcavity is sandwiched between a quarterwavelength distributed Bragg reflector(DBR) and a metal Ag reflective mirror. A single layer of a Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (Alq) film was used as the light-emitting layer. The photoluminescent properties of the optical microcavity and that of the Alq film were studied at the same excitation condition. Compared with the Alq film, the significantly narrowed spectral emission linewidth from 90 nm to 10 nm was observed, the PL emission intensity of the microcavity at the resonant mode is enhanced by the order of 1. The spectral narrowing and intensity enhancement of the microcavity is attributed to the microcavity effect.

It is the first time in China that the phase variations and phase shift of microwave cavity in a miniature Rb fountain frequency standard are studied, considering the effect of imperfect metallic walls. Wall losses in the microwave cavity lead to small traveling wave components that deliver power from the cavity feed to the walls of cavity. The small traveling wave components produce a microradian distribution of phase throughout the cavity ity, and therefore distributed cavity phase shifts need to be considered. The microwave cavity is a TE011 circular cylinder copper cavity, with round cut-hole of end plates (14mm in diameter) for access for the atomic flux and two small apertures in the center of the side wall for coupling in microwave power. After attenuation alpha is calculated, field variations in cavity are solved. The field variations of the cavity are given. At the same time, the influences of loaded quality factor QL and diameter/height (2a/d) of the microwave cavity on the phase variations and phase shift are considered. According to the phase variation and phase shift of microwave cavity we select the parameters of cavity, diameter 2a = 69.2mm, height d = 34.6mm, QL = 5000, which will result in an uncertainty delta(Delta f / f0 ) < 4.7 x 10(-17) and meets the requirement for the miniature Rb fountain frequency standard with accuracy 10(-15).

In this paper, a new type of guided-mode resonant grating (GMRG) filter with an antireflective surface called the 'moth-eye structure' for the multiple channels is presented by using rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and the S-matrix method. Long range, low sidebands and multiple channels are found when the GMRG filters with antireflective surface are illuminated with incident polarization light. It is calculated that the multiple channel phenomenon can be shown when the depth of antireflective surface is increased. Moreover, the wavelengths of the multiple channels can be easily shifted by changing the depth of the homogenous layer which is under the antireflective surface, and the optical properties of GMRG filters such as low sideband reflection and narrow band are not badly spoiled when the depth is changed.

We demonstrate that the surface relief guided-mode resonant gratings with specified central wavelength and FWHM in the visible wavelength range can be designed by analyzing the complex poles of Reflectance and transmission coefficient matrix algorithm (RTCM), a variant of S-matrix propagation algorithm proposed for calculation of multilayer gratings. In addition, FWHM is computed with couple-mode (CM) theory of resonant gratings which is firstly extended by Norton et al. in calculation of waveguide grating. Furthermore, the side band reflections of the filter can be reduced to less than 5% in the visible wavelength with the antireflection (AR) design technique widely used in the thin-film field. Unless the fabrication error control is well treated, it easily causes overetched fabrication errors, which causes the resonant peak value deviation during the fabrication process of guided-mode resonant filters (GMRFs). Hence, the fabrication error control becomes a key point for improving the performance of GMRF. We find that, within the range of the groove depth from 93 to 105 nm, the relationship between the overetched error and the resonant peak value deviation is nearly linear, which means that we can compensate the reflectance response deviation and reduce the resonant peak value deviation by the method of covering the layer film on the GMRF. Simulation results show that the deviation is compensated perfectly by this way. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Single-fundamental-mode photonic crystal (PhC) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) are produced and their single-fundamental-mode performances are investigated and demonstrated. A two-dimensional PhC with single-point-defect structure is fabricated using UV photolithography and inductive coupled plasma reactive ion etching on the surface of the VCSEL's top distributed Bragg-reflector. The PhC VCSEL maintains single-fundamental-mode operating with output power 1.7 mW and threshold current 2.5 mA. The full width half maximum of the lasing spectrum is less than 0.1 nm, the far field divergence angle is less than 10 degrees and the side mode suppression ratio is over 35 dB. The device characteristics are analyzed based on the effective index model of the photonic crystal fiber. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical expectation.

A method for fabrication of long-wavelength narrow line-width InGaAs resonant cavity enhanced (RCE) photodetectors in a silicon substrate operating at the wavelength range of 1.3-1.6 mu m has been developed. A full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.7 nm and a peak responsivity of 0. 16 A/W at the resonance wavelength of 1.55 mu m have been accomplished by using a thick InP layer as part of the resonant cavity. The effects of roughness and tilt of the InP layer surface, and its free carrier absorption, as well as the thickness deviation of the mirror pair on the resonance wavelength shift and the peak quantum efficiency of the RCE photodetectors are analyzed in detail, and approaches for minimizing them toward superior performance are suggested. AlGaN-based resonant-cavity-enhanced (RCE) p-i-n photodetectors (PDs) for operating at the wavelength of 330 nm were designed and fabricated. A 20.5-pair AlN/Al0.3Ga0.7N distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) was used as the back mirror and a 3-pair AlN/Al0.3Ga0.7N DBR as the front one. In the cavity is a p-GaN/i-GaN/n-Al0.3Ga0.7N structure. The optical absorption of the RCE PD structure is at most 59.8% deduced from reflectance measurement. Selectively enhanced by the cavity effect, a response peak of 0.128 A/W at 330 nm with a half-peak breadth of 5.5 nm was obtained under zero bias. The peak wavelength shifted 15 nm with the incident angle of light increasing from 0 degrees to 60 degrees.

With consideration of the modulation frequency of the input lightwave itself, we present a new model to calculate the quantum efficiency of RCE p-i-n photodetectors (PD) by superimposition of multiple reflected lightwaves. For the first time, the optical delay, another important factor limiting the electrical bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD excluding the transit time of the carriers and RCd response of the photodetector, is analyzed and discussed in detail. The optical delay dominates the bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD when its active layer is thinner than several 10 nm. These three limiting factors must be considered exactly for design of ultra-high-speed RCE p-i-n PD.
