A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) hydrophone with high sensitivity was demonstrated. This hydrophone used a rubber diaphragm and a copper hard core as the sensing element. To compensate the hydrostatic pressure, a capillary tube was fixed at the end of the hydrophone. Theoretical analysis of the acoustic pressure sensitivity was given in this letter. Experiments were carried out to test the frequency response of the hydrophone. The result shows that when the Young's modulus of the diaphragm is higher, a flatter frequency response will be obtained.

We present the monolithic integration of a sampled-grating distributed Bragg reflector (SC-DBR) laser with a quantum-well electroabsorption modulator (QW-EAM) by combining ultra-low-pressure (55 mbar) selective-area-growth (SAG) metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) and quantum-well intermixing (QWI) for the first time. The QW-EAM and the gain section can be grown simultaneously by using SAG MOCVD technology. Meanwhile, the QWI technology offers an abrupt band-gap change between two functional sections, which reduces internal absorption loss. The experimental results show that the threshold current I-th = 62 mA, and output power reaches 3.6 mW. The wavelength tuning range covers 30 nm, and all the corresponding side mode suppression ratios are over 30 dB. The extinction ratios at available wavelength channels can reach more than 14 dB with bias of -5 V.

A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensor with the enhanced sensitivity has been demonstrated. A piston-like diaphragm with a hard core in the center is used to enhance the sensitivity. Both the theoretical analysis and the experimental result show that the radius of the hard core has significant effect on the pressure sensitivity. When the radius of the hard core is 1.5 mm, a pressure sensitivity of 7.23 nm/MPa has been achieved.

The circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) is observed in InN at inter-band excitation. The function of the CPGE induced current on laser helicity is experimentally demonstrated and illustrated with the microscopic model. A spin-dependent current obtained in InN is one order larger than in the AlGaN/GaN heterostructures at inter-band excitation. The dependence of CPGE current amplitude on light power and incident angle can be well evaluated with phenomenological theory. This sizeable spin-dependent current not only provides an opportunity to realize spin polarized current at room temperature, but also can be utilized as a reliable tool of spin splitting investigation in semiconductors. We have studied the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas excited by near infrared light at room temperature. The anomalous CPGE observed under normal incidence indicates a swirling current which is realized by a radial spin current via the reciprocal spin-Hall effect. The anomalous CPGE exhibits a cubic cosine dependence on the incidence angle, which is discussed in line with the above interpretation.

We report an effective and nondestructive method based on circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) to detect the lattice polarity of InN. Because of the lattice inversion between In- and N-polar InN, the energy band spin splitting is opposite for InN films with different polarities. Consequently under light irradiation with the same helicity, CPGE photocurrents in In- and N-polar layers will have opposite directions, thus the polarity can be detected. This method is demonstrated by our CPGE measurements in both n- and p-type InN films.

This paper reports that the complex-coupled distributed feedback laser with the sampled grating has been designed and fabricated. The +1st order reflection of the sampled grating is utilized for laser single mode operation, which is 1.5387 mu m in the experiment. The typical threshold current of the device is 30 mA, and the optical output power is about 10 mW at the injection current of 100 mA.

We present a novel reference compensation method for eliminating environmental noise in interferometric wavelength shift demodulation for dynamic fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. By employing a shielded wavelength-division-multiplexed reference FBG in the system the environmental noise is mea, sured from the reference channel, and then subtracted from the demodulation result of each sensor channel. An approximate 40 dB reduction of the environmental noise has been experimentally achieved over a frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 kHz. This method is also suitable for the elimination of broadband environmental noise. The corresponding FBG sensor array system proposed in this paper has shown a wave-length resolution of 7 x 10(-4) pm/root Hz. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A sizable spin-dependent photocurrent related to the interband transition in InN films is observed. The surface charge accumulation layer is suggested to be the origin of the circular photogalvanic current, which is consistent with the result of uniaxial strain experiments and the comparison of front and back incidence. The homogeneous photocurrent demonstrates the existence of spin splitting in the InN surface layer, and the structure inversion asymmetry (SIA)-dominant mechanism indicates a great possibility for the manipulation of spin splitting, which would undoubtedly benefit further research and applications of spintronics. Circular dichromatic absorption difference spectroscopy is developed to measure the spin diffusion dynamics of electrons in bulk n-GaAs. This spectroscopy has higher detection sensitivity over homodyne detection of spin-grating-diffracted signal. A model to describe circular dichromatic absorption difference signal is derived and used to fit experimental signal to retrieve decaying rate of spin gratings. A spin diffusion constant of D-s=201 +/- 25 cm(2)/s for bulk n-GaAs has been measured at room temperature using this technique and is close to electron diffusion constant (D-c), which is much different from the case in GaAs quantum wells where D-s is markedly less than D-c.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensor packaged by using a hard core in the membrane is presented. By utilizing the unique membrane-based FBG packagine method, its pressure sensitivity has been effectively enhanced. The pressure sensitivity of the FBG reaches 5.75 X 10(-3)/MPa within the pressure range of 0.0.16 Mpa. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel triplexing-filter design using silica-based direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating
Resumo:
A new triplexing filter based on a silica direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating is presented. Using a combination of a direction coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating, a 1310-nm channel is multiplexed and 1490- and 1550-nm channels are demultiplexed for fiber-to-the-home. The direction coupler is used to coarsely separate the 1310-nm channel from the 1490- and 1550-nm channels. Subsequently, an arrayed waveguide grating is used to demultiplex the 1490- from 1550-nm channel. The simulated spectra show the 1-dB bandwidth of 110 nm for the 1310-nm channel and 20 and 20.5 nm for the 1490- and 1550-nm channels. The insertion loss is only 0.15 dB for 1310 nm and 5 dB for 1490 and 1550 nm. The crosstalk between the 1490- and 1550-nm channels was less than -35 dB. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensing scheme based on a flat diaphragm and an L-shaped lever is presented. An L-shaped lever transfers the pressure-induced defection of the flat diaphragm to the axial elongation of the FBG. The curve where the L-shaped lever contacts the diaphragm is a segment of an Archimedes spiral, which is used to enhance the responsivity. Because the thermal expansion coefficient of the quartz-glass L-shaped lever and the steel sensor shell is different, the temperature effect is compensated for by optimizing the dimension parameters. Theoretical analysis is presented, and the experimental results show that an ultrahigh pressure responsivity of 244 pm/kPa and a low temperature responsivity of 2.8 pm/degrees C are achieved.
