We present a novel reference compensation method for eliminating environmental noise in interferometric wavelength shift demodulation for dynamic fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. By employing a shielded wavelength-division-multiplexed reference FBG in the system the environmental noise is mea, sured from the reference channel, and then subtracted from the demodulation result of each sensor channel. An approximate 40 dB reduction of the environmental noise has been experimentally achieved over a frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 kHz. This method is also suitable for the elimination of broadband environmental noise. The corresponding FBG sensor array system proposed in this paper has shown a wave-length resolution of 7 x 10(-4) pm/root Hz. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A theory of scattering by charged dislocation lines in a quasitriangle potential well of AlxGa1-xN/GaN heterostructures is developed. The dependence of mobility on carrier sheet density and dislocation density is obtained. The results are compared with those obtained from a perfect two-dimensional electron gas and the reason for discrepancy is given.

Qubit measurement by mesoscopic charge detectors has received great interest in the community of mesoscopic transport and solid-state quantum computation, and some controversial issues still remain unresolved. In this work, we revisit the continuous weak measurement of a solid-state qubit by single electron transistors (SETs) in nonlinear-response regime. For two SET models typically used in the literature, we find that the signal-to-noise ratio can violate the universal upper bound "4," which is imposed quantum mechanically on linear-response detectors. This different result can be understood by means of the cross correlation of the detector currents by viewing the two junctions of the single SET as two detectors. Possible limitation of the potential-scattering approach to this result is also discussed.
Raman scattering study on Ga1-xMnxAs prepared by Mn ions implantation, deposition and post-annealing
Resumo:
Raman scattering measurements have been performed in Ga1-xMnxAs crystals prepared by Mn ions implantation, deposition, and post-annealing. The Raman spectrum measured from the implanted surface of the sample shows some weak phonon modes in addition to GaAs-like phonon modes, where the GaAs-like LO and TO phonons are found to be shifted by approximately 4 and 2 cm(-1), respectively, in the lower frequency direction compared to those observed from the unimplanted surface of the sample. The weak vibrational modes observed are assigned to hausmannite Mn3O4 like. The coupled LO-phonon plasmon mode (CLOPM), and defects and As related vibrational modes caused by Mn ions implantation, deposition, and post-annealing are also observed. The compositional dependence of GaAs-like LO phonon frequency is developed for strained and unstrained conditions and then using the observed LOGaAs peak, the Mn composition is evaluated to be 0.034. Furthermore, by analyzing the intensity of CLOPM and unscreened LOGaAs phonon mode, the hole density is evaluated to be 1.84 x 10(18) cm(-3). (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The theoretical electron mobility limited by dislocation scattering of a two-dimensional electron gas confined near the interface of an AlxGa1-xN/GaN heterostructure is calculated. The accurate wave functions and electron distributions of the three lowest subbands for a typical structure are obtained by solving the Schrodinger and Poisson equations self-consistently. Based on the model of treating dislocation as a charged line, a simple scattering potential, a square-well potential, is utilized. The estimated mobility suggests that such a choice can simplify the calculation without introducing significant deviation from experimental data. It is also found that the dislocation scattering dominates both the low- and moderate-temperature mobilities and accounts for the nearly flattening-out behavior with increasing temperature. To clarify the role of dislocation scattering all standard scattering mechanisms are included in the calculation.

Planar graphite has been extensively studied by Raman scattering for years. A comparative Raman study of several different and less common non-planar graphitic materials is given here. New kinds of graphite whiskers and tubular graphite cones (synthetic and natural) have been introduced. Raman spectroscopy has been applied to the characterization of natural graphite crystal edge planes, an individual graphite whisker graphite polyhedral crystals and tubular graphite cones. Almost all of the observed Raman modes were assigned according to the selection rules and the double-resonance Raman mechanism. The polarization properties related to the structural features, the line shape of the first-order dispersive mode and its combination modes, the frequency variation of some modes in different carbon materials and other unique Raman spectral features are discussed here in detail.

Raman measurements and photoluminescence (PL) were performed on the metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition epitaxially grown GaN before and after the implantation with Er and Er+O. Several Raman defect modes have emerged from the implantation-damaged samples. The structures around 300 and 595 cm(-1) modes are attributed to the disorder-activated Raman scattering, whereas the 670 cm(-1) peak is assigned to nitrogen-vacancy-related defect scattering. One additional peak at 360 cm(-1) arises after Er+O coimplantation. This Raman peak is attributed to the O-implantation-induced defect complex. The appearance of the 360 cm(-1) mode results in the decrease of the Er3+ -related infrared PL intensity for the GaN:Er+O samples. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Decoherence properties of two Josephson charge qubits coupled via the sigma(x)sigma(x) type are investigated. Considering the special structure of this new design, the dissipative effects arising from the circuit impedance providing the fluxes for the qubits' superconducting quantum interference device loops coupled to the sigma(x) qubit variables are considered. The results show that the overall decoherence effects are significantly strong in this qubit design. It is found that the dissipative effects are stronger in the case of coupling to two uncorrelated baths than are found in the case of one common bath.

Metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structures were fabricated by RF-plasma-assisted MBE using different buffer layer structures. One type of buffer structure consists of an AlN high-temperature buffer layer (HTBL) and a GaN intermediate temperature buffer layer (ITBL), another buffer structure consists of just a single A IN HTBL. Systematic measurements in the flicker noise and deep level transient Fourier spectroscopy (DLTFS) measurements were used to characterize the defect properties in the films. Both the noise and DLTFS measurements indicate improved properties for devices fabricated with the use of ITBL and is attributed to the relaxation of residue strain in the epitaxial layer during growth process. Self-assembled Si/Ge dot multilayers with small, uncorrelated dots fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode are studied by Raman scattering of folded longitudinal acoustic (FLA) modes. The FLA Raman spectra are analyzed and modeled with respect to mode frequencies and the spectral envelope of mode intensities. The deduced average superlattice properties are consistent with results from atomic force microscopy. The simple Rytov model used for Si/Ge layer structures reproduces very well the frequencies of the FLA modes up to 150 cm(-1). The nonlinearity of phonon dispersion curves in bulk Si for large momenta, however, becomes important for modeling the higher frequencies of observed FLA modes up to 22nd order. The effective dot layer width and an activation energy for thermal intermixing of 2.1+/-0.2 eV are determined from the spectral envelopes of FLA mode intensities of as-grown and annealed Si/Ge dot multilayers. We have studied the Fano resonance in photon-assisted transport through a quantum dot. Both the coherent current and the spectral density of shot noise have been calculated. It is predicted that the shape of the Fano profile will also appear in satellite peaks. It is found that the variations of Fano profiles with the strengths of nonresonant transmissions are not synchronous in absorption and emission sidebands. The effect of interference on photon-assisted pumped current has also been investigated. We further predict the current and spectral density of shot noise as a periodic function of the phase, which exhibits an intrinsic property of resonant and nonresonant channels in the structures.

We observed a transition from film to vertically well-aligned nanorods for ZnO grown on sapphire (0001) substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. A growth mechanism was proposed to explain such a transition. Vertically well-aligned homogeneous nanorods with average diameters of similar to 30, 45, 60, and 70 nm were grown with the c-axis orientation. Raman scattering showed that the E-2 (high) mode shifted to high frequency with the decrease of nanorod diameters, which revealed the dependence of nanorod diameters on the stress state. This dependence suggests a stress-driven diameter-controlled mechanism for ZnO nanorod arrays grown on sapphire (0001) substrates. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A complete Raman study of GaP nanowires is presented. By comparison with the Raman spectra of GaP bulk material, microcrystals and nanoparticles, we give evidence that the Raman spectrum is affected by the one-dimensional shape of the nanowires. The Raman spectrum is sensitive to the polarization of the laser light. A specific shape of the overtones located between 600 and 800 cm(-1) is actually a signature of the nanowires. Some phonon confinement and thermal behavior is also observed for nanowires.

The microstructures of hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon (tic-Si: H) thin films, prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), hot wire CVD(HWCVD) and plasma assisted HWCVD (PE-HWCVD), have been analyzed by the small angle x-ray scattering(SAXS) measurement. The SAXS data show that the microstructures of the μ c-Si: H films display different characteristics for different deposition techniques. For films deposited by PECVD, the volume fraction of micro-voids and mean size are smaller than those in HWCVD sample. Aided by suitable ion-bombardment, PE-HWCVD samples show a more compact structure than the HWCVD sample. The microstructure parameters of the μ c-Si: H thin films deposited by two-steps HWCVD and PE-HWCVD with Ar ions are evidently improved. The result of 45° tilting SAXS measurement indicates that the distribution of micro-voids in the film is anisotropic. The Fouriertransform infrared spectra confirm the SAXS data.

In this paper, we investigated the Raman scattering and photoluminescence of Zn1-xMnxO nanowires synthesized by the vapor phase growth. The changes of E-2(High) and A(1(LO)) phonon frequency in Raman spectra indicate that the tensile stress increases while the free carrier concentration decreases with the increase of manganese. The Raman spectra exited by the different lasers exhibit the quantum confinement effect of Zn1-xMnxO nanowires. The photoluminescence spectra reveal that the near band emission is affected by the content of manganese obviously. The values Of I-UV/G decrease distinctly with the manganese increase also demonstrate that more stress introduced with the more substitution of Mn for Zn.
