A new technique was developed for characterisation of stainless steel to intergramilar stress corrosion cracking by atomic force microscopy. The technique proved to be effective in sensitisation identification of AISI 304 stainless steel and might be promising in sensitisation identification of other stainless steels. We present a good alternative method to improve the tribological properties of polymer films by chemisorbing a long-chain monolayer on the functional polymer surface. Thus, a novel self-assembled monolayer is successfully prepared on a silicon substrate coated with amino-group-containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) by the chemical adsorption of stearic acid (STA) molecules. The formation and structure of the STA-PEI film are characterized by means of contact-angle measurement and ellipsometric thickness measurement, and of Fourier transformation infrared spectrometric and atomic force microscopic analyses. The micro- and macro-tribological properties of the STA-PEI film are investigated on an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a unidirectional tribometer, respectively. It has been found that the STA monolayer about 2.1-nm thick is produced on the PEI coating by the chemical reaction between the amino groups in the PEI and the carboxyl group in the STA molecules to form a covalent amide bond in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) as a dehydrating regent. By introducing the STA monolayer, the hydrophilic PEI polymer surface becomes hydrophobic with a water contact angle to be about 105degrees. Study of the time dependence of the film formation shows that the adsorption of PEI is fast, whereas at least 24 h is needed to generate the saturated STA monolayer. Whereas the PEI coating has relatively high adhesion, friction, and poor anti-wear ability, the STA-PEI film possesses good adhesive resistance and high load-carrying capacity and anti-wear ability, which could be attributed to the chemical structure of the STA-PEI thin film. It is assumed that the hydrogen bonds between the molecules of the STA-PEI film act to stabilize the film and can be restored after breaking during sliding. Thus, the self-assembled STA-PEI thin film might find promising application in the lubrication of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS).

A novel super-hydrophobic stearic acid (STA) film with a water contact angle of 166° was prepared by chemical adsorption on aluminum wafer coated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) film. The micro-tribological behavior of the super-hydrophobic STA monolayer was compared with that of the polished and PEI-coated Al surfaces. The effect of relative humidity on the adhesion and friction was investigated as well. It was found that the STA monolayer showed decreased friction, while the adhesive force was greatly decreased by increasing the surface roughness of the Al wafer to reduce the contact area between the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip and the sample surface to be tested. Thus the friction and adhesion of the Al wafer was effectively decreased by generating the STA monolayer, which indicated that it could be feasible and rational to prepare a surface with good adhesion resistance and lubricity by properly controlling the surface morphology and the chemical composition. Both the adhesion and friction decreased as the relative humidity was lowered from 65% to 10%, though the decrease extent became insignificant for the STA monolayer.

本文用原子力显微术(AFM)研究了牛血清白蛋白(BSA)在亲水硅片表面的吸附,硅片表面经亲水处理后,将牛血清蛋白(BSA)吸附在表面,采用轻敲模式,可获得清晰的AFM图像,牛血清蛋白(BSA)的AFM图像表明:BSA在亲水硅片表面是单分子,水平吸附在硅片表面,且吸颗粒状;1mg/ml的BSA在吸附30min后为饱和吸附。BSA到达硅表面后,蛋白中可移动的带正电荷的基团可以趋向亲水表面,使BSA与硅表面的静电相互作用由斥力变为吸引力,BSA可以稳定地吸附在亲水硅片表面。

杜仲抗真菌蛋白(Eucommiaantifungalprotein,EAFP)的单晶体具有在几小时内就可长大的快速生长特性.用原子力显微成像(atomicforcemicroscope,AFM)技术,原位实时观测了EAFP单斜晶体生长过程中的{10 0}表面形貌动态变化,并分别在不同的过饱和度下测量了其生长速率.结果表明,EAFP晶体生长的速率与蛋白质溶液的过饱和度相关,在过饱和度高时(σ =1 78)晶面生长极快;在中等过饱和度(σ =1 5)下,其晶面台阶的生长速率沿b,c方向分别为 12nm/s和 2 4 2nm/s,比溶菌酶生长速率(6~ 7nm/s)快很多;在蛋白质浓度很低的情况下,其生长速率仍与其他蛋白质相当.EAFP晶体快速生长可能与该分子尺寸较小,内部结构紧凑,分子骨架呈刚性和分子表面性质等其固有特性密切相关.沉淀剂浓度对EAFP晶体生长也有影响.过饱和度很低时,提高沉淀剂浓度会干扰晶体生长.

In this article, optimization of shear adhesion strength between an elastic cylindrical fiber and a rigid substrate under torque is studied. We find that when the radius of the fiber is less than a critical value, the bonding-breaking along the contact interface occurs uniformly, rather than by mode III crack propagation. Comparison between adhesion models under torque and tension shows that nanometer scale of fibers may have evolved to achieve optimization of not only the normal adhesive strength but also the shear adhesive strength in tolerance of possible contact flaws.

Capillary forces are dominant in adhesive forces measured with an atomic force microscope (AFM) in ambient air, which are thought to be dependent on water film thickness, relative humidity and the free energy of the water film. In this paper, besides these factors, we study the nature of the 'pull-off' force on a variety of atmospheres as a function of the contact time. It is found that capillary forces strongly depend on the contact time. In lower relative humidity atmosphere, the adhesion force is almost independent of the contact time. However, in higher relative humidity, the adhesion force increases with the contact time. Based on the experiment and a model that we present in this paper, the growth of the liquid bridge can be seen as undergoing two processes: one is water vapour condensation; the other is the motion of the thin liquid film that is absorbed on the substrate. The experiment and the growth model presented in this paper have direct relevance to the working mechanism of AFM in ambient air.

根据AFM(Atomic-Force Microscope原子力显微镜)实验得到的典型压入曲线给出了一种标定电压-挠度转化系数的方法。对压入曲线进行常规的数据处理,结果显示在起始段和末段各有5nm左右的名义压入深度。然而,有限元计算结果表明上述名义压入深度并非真正的针尖压入样品的深度。通过悬臂梁响应、光线传播、四象限接收器等几个方面的非线性效应分析,得到了实验中各部分非线性效应对实验结果的影响方式和误差范围,从而发现压入实验中四象限接收器上光斑相对移动引起的非线性效应是造成错误判读压入深度的重要原因。最后,对如何减小测量误差和如何在一定误差范围内得到可靠的实验结果给出了一些建议.

随着后基因组时代的到来以及蛋白质组学研究的深入开展,研究蛋白质晶体生长成为生物化学和结构生物学领域一个广泛关注的课题。通过使用原子力显微镜(Atomic Force Microscope,简称AFM)对杜仲抗真菌蛋白(eucommia antifungal protein,简称EAFP)的晶体在有母液存在下原位实时动态地进行了晶面生长观察。研究结果表明:不同过饱和度对EAFP晶体生长形貌的影响较大,较高的过饱和度下生长很快,生长台阶密度高,较高的过饱和度下主要进行各向异性二维台阶的发生、发展,较低的过饱和度下主要采用螺旋位错的生长方式,当过饱和度极低时生长缓慢,且晶体表面有很多小孔存在,晶面生长很不完整;还对不同过饱和度下晶体生长速率进行了定量的测量,也反映了过饱和度对EAFP晶体生长的影响;同时对在AFM观察过程中由探针的扫描速度和方向对表面形貌的影响进行了讨论。

The tribological properties of the high-strength and high-modulus ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) film and the UHMWPE composites reinforced by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT/UHMWPE) were investigated using a nanoindenter and atomic force microscope (AFM). The MWCNT/UHMWPE composites films exhibited not only high wear resistance but also a low friction coefficient compared to the pure UHMWPE films. We attribute the high wear resistance to the formation of the new microstructure in the composites due to the addition of MWCNTs.

A rapid detection and identification of pathogens is important for minimizing transfer and spread of disease. A label-free and multiplex biosensor based on imaging ellipsometry (BIE) had been developed for the detection of phage M13KO7. The surface of silicon wafer is modified with aldehyde, and proteins can be patterned homogeneously and simultaneously on the surface of silicon wafer in an array format by a microfluidic system. Avidin is immobilized on the surface for biotin-anti-M13 immobilization by means of interaction between avidin and biotin, which will serve as ligand against phage M13KO7. Phages M13KO7 are specifically captured by the ligand when phage M13KO7 solution passes over the surface, resulting in a significant increase of mass surface concentration of the anti-M13 binding phage M13KO7 layer, which could be detected by imaging ellipsometry with a sensitivity of 10(9) pfu/ml. Moreover, atomic force microscopy is also used to confirm the fact that phage M13KO7 has been directly captured by ligands on the surface. It indicates that BIE is competent for direct detection of phage M13KO7 and has potential in the field of virus detection. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a method of image-speckle contrast for the nonprecalibration measurement of the root-mean-square roughness and the lateral-correlation length of random surfaces with Gaussian correlation. We use the simplified model of the speckle fields produced by the weak scattering object in the theoretical analysis. The explicit mathematical relation shows that the saturation value of the image-speckle contrast at a large aperture radius determines the roughness, while the variation of the contrast with the aperture radius determines the lateral-correlation length. In the experimental performance, we specially fabricate the random surface samples with Gaussian correlation. The square of the image-speckle contrast is measured versus the radius of the aperture in the 4f system, and the roughness and the lateral-correlation length are extracted by fitting the theoretical result to the experimental data. Comparison of the measurement with that by an atomic force microscope shows our method has a satisfying accuracy. (C) 2002 Optical Society of America.

对离子交换波导制备过程中掺铒磷酸盐玻璃表面的侵蚀问题进行了研究,分析了产生侵蚀的原因,提出镀K9玻璃薄膜的方法,对掺铒磷酸盐玻璃表面进行保护.采用光学显微镜和原子力显微镜对波导表面特性进行了表征。同时对平板波导的光学特性进行了测试.研究表明K9玻璃薄膜不仅能够对掺铒磷酸盐玻璃起到保护作用,同时允许交换离子透过进入磷酸盐玻璃形成波导层.

提出了一种用于针尖扫描原子力显微镜(AFM)的光点跟踪设计方案,结构简单,容易实现。设计方案对扫描器的负载能力要求不高,而且能使原子力显微镜实现较大范围的针尖扫描。实验结果表明,采用此光点跟踪设计方案的针尖扫描原子力显微镜能实现最大100μm×100μm范围的扫描,z方向上的误差最大1nm,能很好地满足大样品扫描的需要。

We present our experimental results supporting optical-electrical hybrid data storage by optical recording and electrical reading using Ge2Sb2Te5as recording medium. The sheet resistance of laser- irradiated Ge2Sb2Te5. lms exhibits an abrupt change of four orders of magnitude ( from 10 7 to 10 3./ sq) with increasing laser power, current- voltage curves of the amorphous area and the laser- crystallized dots, measured by a conductive atomic force microscope ( C- AFM), show that their resistivities are 2.725 and 3.375 x 10- 3., respectively, the surface current distribution in the. lms also shows high and low resistance states. All these results suggest that the laser- recorded bit can be read electrically by measuring the change of electrical resistivity, thus making optical electrical hybrid data storage possible.
