The effect of laser fluence on the crystallization of amorphous silicon irradiated by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is studied both theoretically and experimentally. An effective numerical model is set up to predict the melting threshold and the optimized laser fluence for the crystallization of 200-nm-thick amorphous silicon. The variation of the temperature distribution with time and the melt depth is analyzed. Besides the model, the Raman spectra of thin films treated with different fluences are measured to confirm the phase transition and to determine the optimized fluence. The calculating results accord well with those obtained from the experimental data in this research. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Crystalline beta-BBO thin films have been successfully prepared on (001)-oriented Sr2+-doped alpha-BBO substrates using liquid phase epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition techniques. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray rocking curve (XRC). The present results manifest that the beta-BBO thin films grown on Sr2+-doped alpha-BBO substrates have larger degree of orientation f-value and smaller XRC FWHM than the ones grown on other reported substrates. Compared with other substrates, alpha-BBO has the same UV cutoff and the similar structure to beta-BBO. These results reveal that alpha-BBO single crystal may be a promising substrate proper to the growth of beta-BBO films. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lattice-matched (Delta(a/a) = 1.8-3.4%) (001) LiGaO2 substrates have been employed for the first time to grow ZnO thin films by pulsed-laser deposition at 350-650 degrees C with oxygen partial pressure of 20Pa. XRD shows that a highly c-axis-oriented ZnO film can be deposited on (001) LiGaO2 substrate at 500 degrees C. AFM images reveal the surfaces of as-deposited ZnO films are smooth and root-mean-square values are 6.662, 5.765 and 6.834 nm at 350, 500 and 650 degrees C, respectively. PL spectra indicate only near-band-edge UV emission appears in the curve of ZnO film deposited at 500 degrees C. The deep-level emission of ZnO film deposited at 650 degrees C probably results from Li diffusion into the film. All the results illustrate substrate temperature plays a pretty important role in obtaining ZnO film with a high quality on LiGaO2 substrate by pulsed-laser deposition. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. ZnO thin films were grown on (0001)LiNbO3 substrates by the MOCVD technique. The substrate temperatures during growth were changed from 400 to 600 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the ZnO film showed a strong [002] reflection peak, and the peak intensity was dependent on substrate temperature. The ZnO columnar grains were highly oriented along the (002) direction when the film processing temperature was 600 degrees C. The optical transmission and PL results also indicated that highest crystalline quality of the ZnO films could be obtained at elevated temperatures. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnO films were grown on (0 0 0 1) LiNbO3 substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Annealing of ZnO films was performed in air for I h at 800 degrees C. The effects of annealing on the structural and optical properties of ZnO thin films on LiNbO3 substrates were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and AFM showed that the as-grown and the annealed ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 substrates had c-axis preferential orientation, the crystallinity of the ZnO films grown on LiNbO3 Substrates was improved, and the grain size increased by annealing. The PL spectra showed that the intensity of the UV near-band-edge peak was increased after annealing, while the intensity of visible peak (deep-level emission) decreased. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Thin films of beta barium borate have been prepared by liquid phase epitaxy on Si2+-doped alpha-BaB2O4 (alpha-BBO, the high temperature phase of barium berate) (001) and (110) substrates. The results of X-ray diffraction indicate that the films show highly (001) preferred orientation on (001)-oriented substrates while the films grown on (110) substrates are textured with (140) orientation. The crystallinity of these films was found to depend on growth temperature, rotation rate, dip time and orientation of substrate. Growth conditions were optimized to grow films with (001) orientation on (001) substrates reproducibly. The films show second harmonic generation of 400 nm light upon irradiation with 800 nm Ti: Sapphire femtosecond laser light. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnO thin films were deposited on the substrates of (100) gamma-LiAlO2 at 400, 550 and 700 degrees C using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with the fixed oxygen pressure of 20 Pa, respectively. When the substrate temperature is 400 degrees C, the grain size of the film is less than 1 mu m observed by Leitz microscope and measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). As the substrate temperature increases to 550 degrees C, highly-preferred c-orientation and high-quality ZnO film can be attained. While the substrate temperature rises to 700 degrees C, more defects appears on the surface of film and the ZnO films become polycrystalline again possibly because more Li of the substrate diffused into the ZnO film at high substrate temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnO films at room temperature show the blue emission peaks centered at 430 nm. We suggest that the blue emission corresponds to the electron transition from the level of interstitial Zn to the valence band. Meanwhile, the films grown on gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) exhibit green emission centered at 540 nm, which seemed to be ascribed to excess zinc and/or oxygen vacancy in the ZnO films caused by diffusion of Li. from the substrates into the films during the deposition.

Optical properties for ZnO thin films grown on (100) γ-LiAlO2 (LAO) substrate by pulsed laser deposition method were investigated. The c-axis oriented ZnO films were grown on (100) γ-LiAlO2 substrates at the substrate temperature of 550 Celsius degrees. The transmittance of the films was over 85%. Peaks attributed to excitons were shown in absorption spectra, which indicated that thin films had high crystallinity. Photoluminescence spectra with the maximum peak at 540 nm were observed at room temperature, which seemed to be ascribed to oxygen vacancy in the ZnO films caused by diffusion of Li from the substrates into the films during the deposition.

Morphological defects in beta-barium borate (beta-BBO) thin films grown on Sr2+ -doped alpha-BBO substrates by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) technique were studied by scanning electron micrograph (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical spectroscopy. The present results indicate that the main defects exit in beta-BBO thin films are microcracks and hollow structure. The formation of microcrack is due to the lattice mismatch and the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between substrate and film. The hollow structure might be caused during the combination of islands, which formed in the initial stage. (C) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Nonpolar a-plane (1120) ZnO thin films have been fabricated on gamma-LiAlO2 (302) substrates via the low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. An obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the Raman spectra indicates that there exhibits in-plane optical anisotropy in the a-plane ZnO thin films. Highly-oriented uniform grains of rectangular shape can be seen from the atomic force microscopy images, which mean that the lateral growth rate of the thin films is also anisotropic. It is demonstrated experimentally that a buffer layer deposited at a low temperature (200 degrees C) can improve the structural and optical properties of the epilayer to a large extent. ZrO2, films were deposited by electron-beam evaporation with the oxygen partial pressure varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to I I X 10(-3) Pa. The phase structure of the samples was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal absorption of the films was measured by the surface thermal lensing technique. A spectrophotometer was employed to measure the refractive indices of the samples. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) was assessed using a 1064, nm Nd: yttritium-aluminium-garnet pulsed laser at pulse width of 12 ns. The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the microstructure and LIDT of ZrO2 films was investigated. XRD data revealed that the films changed from polycrystalline to amorphous as the oxygen partial pressure increased. The variation of refractive index at 550 nm wavelength indicated that the packing density of the films decreased gradually with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The absorptance of the samples decreased monotonically from 125.2 to 84.5 ppm with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The damage threshold, values increased from 18.5 to 26.7 J/cm(2) for oxygen partial pressures varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to 9 X 10(-3) Pa, but decreased to 17.3 J/cm(2) in the case of I I X 10(-3) Pa. ZnO/MgF2/ZnO sandwich structure films were fabricated. The effects of a buffer layer on structure and optical properties of ZnO films were investigated by X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, optical transmittance and absorption measurements. Measurement results showed that the buffer layer had the effects of improving the quality of ZnO films and releasing the residual stresses in the films. The near-band edge emissions of ZnO films deposited on the MgF2 buffer layer were significantly enhanced compared with those deposited on bare substrate due to the smaller lattice mismatch between MgF2 and ZnO than that between fused silica and ZnO.
