When injected electrons in a quantum well first experience an intersubband relaxation process before their escaping by tunneling through a double-barrier structure behind, the magnetic suppression of intersubband LO or LA phonon scattering can give rise to a noticeable nonthermal occupation in higher-lying subbands. That is clearly verified by the relative intensity ratio of the interband photoluminescence spectra for E-2-HH1 and E-1-HH1 transitions. The observed phenomenon may provide an effective method for controlling intersubband scattering rate, a central issue in so-called quantum cascade lasers, and facilitating the population inversion between subbands in quantum wells.

Electron cyclotron resonance CR) measurements have been carried out in magnetic fields up to 32 T to study electron-phonon interaction in two heavily modulation-delta -doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As single-quantum-well samples. No measurable resonant magnetopolaron effects were observed in either sample in the region of the GaAs longitudinal optical (LO) phonons. However, when the CR frequency is above LO phonon frequency, omega (LO)=E-LO/(h) over bar, at high magnetic fields (B>27 T), electron CR exhibits a strong avoided-level-crossing splitting for both samples at frequencies close to (omega (LO)+ (E-2-E-1)1 (h) over bar, where E-2, and E-1 are the energies of the bottoms of the second and the first subbands, respectively. The energy separation between the two branches is large with the minimum separation of 40 cm(-1) occurring at around 30.5 T. A detailed theoretical analysis, which includes a self-consistent calculation of the band structure and the effects of electron-phonon interaction on the CR, shows that this type of splitting is due to a three-level resonance between the second Landau level of the first electron subband and the lowest Landau level of the second subband plus one GaAs LO phonon. The absence of occupation effects in the final states and weak screening or this three-level process yields large energy separation even in the presence of high electron densities. Excellent agreement between the theory and the experimental results is obtained.

Diluted-magnetic GaN:Sm:Eu films have been fabricated by co-implantation of Sm and Eu ions into c-plane (0001) GaN films and a subsequent annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The XRD and AFM analyses show that the annealing process can effectively recover the crystalline degradation caused by implantation. Compared with GaN:Sm films, more defects have been introduced into GaN:Sm:Eu films due to the Eu implantation process. According to the SQUID analysis, GaN:Sm:Eu films exhibit clear room-temperature ferromagnetism. Moreover, GaN:Sm:Eu films show a lower saturation magnetization (Ms) than GaN:Sm films.

Square microcavity laser with an output waveguide is proposed and analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. For a square resonator with refractive index of 3.2, side length of 4 microns, and output waveguide of 0.4-micron width, we have got the quality factors (Q factors) of 6.7×10~2 and 7.3×10~3 for the fundamental and first-order transverse magnetic (TM) mode near the wavelength of 1.5 microns, respectively. The simulated intensity distribution for the first-order TM mode shows that the coupling efficiency in the waveguide reaches 53%. The numerical simulation shows that the first-order transverse modes have fairly high Q factor and high coupling efficiency to the output waveguide. Therefore the square resonator with an output waveguide is a promising candidate to realize single-mode directional emission microcavity lasers.

Two important factors that influence the force accuracy of the electromagnet-based nano-indenters but have not yet attracted much attention are analyzed, and a more reasonable way to estimate the force accuracy is presented in this paper. MTS Nano Indenter (R), with the characteristics of a coil suspended in a uniform magnetic field by two sets of springs acting as an actuator and force measuring unit, is used as an example. One of the two factors is the uniformity of the magnetic field. The other is the stiffness of the supporting spring. Consequently, the practical force accuracy varies considerably from test to test because it firmly depends on the working position of the coil and the displacement stroke. A reasonable estimated accuracy value is of the order of 10 degrees mu N for typical indentation tests with a 10(2) nm indentation depth or a 10 degrees mN test force. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Over the past two decades, magnetoclimatological studies of loess-paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) have made outstanding achievements, which greatly promote the understanding of East Asian paleomonsoon evolution, inland aridification of Asia, and past global climate changes. Loess magnetic properties of the CLP have been well studied. In contrast, loess magnetic properties from outside the CLP in China have not been fully understood. We have little knowledge about the magnetic properties of loess in the Ili Basin, an intermontane depression of the Tianshan (or Tien Shan) Mountains. Here, we present the results of rock magnetic measurements of the Ili loess including mass magnetic susceptibility (χ) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), high/low temperature dependence of susceptibility (TDS) and hysteresis, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineral analysis. Based on the comparison with loess-paleosol sequences in the CLP (hereafter referred to as the Chinese loess), we discuss the possible magnetic susceptibility enhancement mechanism of the Ili loess. The results show that 1) the total magnetic mineral concentration of the Ili loess is far lower than that of the Chinese loess, though they have similar magnetic mineral compositions. The ferrimagnetic minerals in the Ili loess are magnetite and maghemite, and the antiferromagnetic mineral is hematite; XRD analysis also identifies the presence of ilmenite. The ratio of maghemite is lower in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess, but the ratios of magnetite and hematite are higher in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess. 2) The granularity of magnetic minerals in the Ili loess, dominated by pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multi-domain (MD) grains, is generally much coarser than that of the Chinese loess. Ultrafine pedogenically-produced magnetic grains have a very limited contribution to the susceptibility enhancement. Rather, PSD and MD particles of magnetite and maghemite are the main contributors to the enhancement of susceptibility in the Ili loess. 3) The susceptibility enhancement mechanism for the Ili loess is complicated and superimposes both a wind velocity/vigor model (Alaskan or Siberian model) and the in situ ultrafine grain pedogenic model; the former might play an important role in the Ili loess. 4) Magnetic susceptibility enhancements of the Ili loess are related not only to the eolian input of the source area, but also to the local climate, landform, and geological background. Therefore, great care should be taken when reconstructing paleoclimate using magnetic susceptibility data from the Ili loess.

Magnetic nanoparticles of nickel substituted cobalt ferrite (NixCo1-xFe2O4:0 <= x <= 1) have been synthesized by co-precipitation route. Particles size as estimated by the full width half maximum (FWHM) of the strongest X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques was found in the range 18-28 +/- 4 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis confirms the presence of Co, Ni, Fe and oxygen as well as the desired phases in the prepared nanoparticles. The selective area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis confirms the crystalline nature of the prepared nanoparticles. Data collected from the magnetization hysteresis loops of the samples show that the prepared nanoparticles are highly magnetic at room temperature. Both coercivity and saturation magnetization of the samples were found to decrease linearly with increasing Ni-concentration in cobalt ferrite. Superparamagnetic blocking temperature as determined from the zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curve shows a decreasing trend with increasing Ni-concentration in cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. High homogeneity of the CR (collector ring) dipole magnet for FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) project at GSI is essential. The two optimized and analysis methods are introduced in detail. In order to obtain an ideal integral magnetic field distribution, the complicated end chamfer has been designed. By chamfering the removable pole, the distribution tolerance of high magnetic field is optimized to +/- 2 x 10(-4). The method of adding a mirror plane is suitable for the high magnetic field and it doesn't fit the low one. The OPERA is used to optimize the dipole magnetic field.

Finite Element Method is used in this article to analyze the stress of CR superferric magnet. Magnetic force and the stress caused by this force are calculated. The thermal stress and strain of the coil caused by cooling down is also analyzed. The result will be taken as a check for the design of the coil and coilcase, and also as a reference for the optimization of further design and quench protection.

Cobalt nanowires with controlled diameters have been synthesized using electrochemical deposition in etched ion-track polycarbonate membranes. Structural characterization of these nanowires with diameter 70, 90, 120 nm and length 30 mu m was performed by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The as-prepared wires show uniform diameter along the whole length and X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that [002] texture of these wires become more pronounced as diameter is reduced. Magnetic characterization of the nanowires shows a clear difference of squareness and coercivity between parallel and perpendicular orientations of the wires with respect to the applied field direction. In case of parallel applied field, the coercivity has been found to be decreasing with increasing diameter of the wires while in perpendicular case; the coercivity observes lower values for larger diameter. The results are explained by taking into account the magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropies with respect to the applied field and domain transformation mechanism when single domain limit is surpassed.

The superconducting magnet of the LPT (Lanzhou Penning trap) consists of nine coaxial coils. The maximum magnetic field is 7 T and thus results in a large magnetic force. In order to assure the mechanical stability, it is necessary to do the stress analysis of the magnet system. The 3D Finite Element Analysis of thermal and mechanical behavior was presented in this paper. For the numerical simulation and analysis of the phenomena inside the structure, the ADINA and TOSCA code were chosen right from start. The ADINA code is commonly used for numerical simulations of the structure analysis [1] and the TOSCA code is professional software to calculate the magnetic field and Lorentz Forces. The results of the analysis were evaluated in terms of the stress and deformation.

A green one-step approach has been developed for the synthesis of amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles. The synthesis was accomplished by simply mixing FeCl2 with arginine under ambient conditions. It was found that the Fe2+/arginine molar ratio, reaction duration and temperature greatly influence the size, morphology and composition of magnetic nanoparticles. The arginine-stabilized magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques.

Magnetically functionalized mesoporous silica spheres with different size (average diameter, A.D.) from 150 nm to 2 mu m and pore size distribution were synthesized by generating magnetic FexOy nanoparticles onto the mesoporous silica hosts using the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption results show that these composites conserved regular sphere morphology and ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles. XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites with different gamma-Fe2O3 loading amounts possess super-paramagnetic properties at 300 K, and the saturation magnetization increases with increasing Fe ratio loaded.

Magnetic functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 (SiO2) aggregate blocks and rice grain-like particles were realized by using a sol-gel method, resulting in the formation of FexOy@SBA-15 composite materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption/desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that these composites conserved ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles in the pores and on the outer surface of SBA-15. It was confirmed by the XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites possess superparamagnetic properties at 300 K. The saturation magnetization of these composites increased with the increasing loading amount of gamma-Fe2O3. These composites, which possess high surface area and high pore volume, show magnetic response sufficient for drug targeting in the presence of an external magnetic field.

The solid solutions of CdYFeWO7, which are cubic pyrochlores of the type A(2)B(2)O(7), have been prepared and their structures were determined using Ab initio method. Rietveld refinement of the powder XRD data showed that CdYFeWO7 adopted cubic (Fd-3m) structure, while oxides crystallized in a defect-pyrochlore structure where both O (48f) and O'(8b) sites were partially occupied, and the frustrated cations sublattice precluded long range ordering of Fe/W in the pyrochlore structure. Charge distribution analysis also suggested incomplete occupation of different oxygen sites, thus the compound was non-stoichiometric, with the formula CdYFeW0.982O6.94, Magnetic measurements were carried out to find that Fe ions were in the high spin trivalent state. Curie Weiss paramagnetism down to similar to 5 K and the characteristic superposition between FC and ZFC suggested spin liquid rather than spin glass state.
