Microvoid arrays were self-organized when femtosecond laser beam was tightly focused at a fixed point inside CaF2 crystal sample. Except void array grown below the focal point which had been reported before, we found another void array grown vertical to the laser propagation direction. This result has potential application in the fabrication of integrated micro-optic elements and photonic crystals. The possible mechanism of the phenomenon was proposed and verified experimentally.

By using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL spectra, the optical properties of single InAs quantum dot (QD) embedded in the p-1-n structure have been studied under an applied electric field With the increasing of electric field, the exciton lifetime increases due to the Stark effect. We noticed that the decrease or quenching of PL intensity with increasing the electric field is mainly due to the decrease of the carriers captured by QD.

We investigate two-photon excited fluorescence from CdSe quantum dots with a center-emitting wavelength of 655 nm on SiN photonic crystals. We find that two-photon excited fluorescence is enhanced by more than 1 order of magnitude in the vertical direction when a photonic crystal is used compared to the fluorescence spectra in the absence of photonic crystals. The spectrum of two-photon excited fluorescence from quantum dots on SiN photonic crystal is observed to shift to blue compared to that from quantum dots on SiN without photonic crystals. Poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) capped PbS quantum dots about 3-6 nm in diameter were synthesized with a novel method. Unlike the synthesis of oleic acid capped PbS quantum dots, the reactions were carried out in solution at room temperature, with the presence of a capping ligand species, MDMO-PPV. The quantum dots were used to fabricate bulk heterojunction solar cells with an indium tin oxide (ITO)/polyethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrenesulphonate (PEDOT: PSS)/MDMO-PPV: PbS/Al structure. Current density-voltage characterization of the devices showed that after the addition of the MDMO-PPV capped PbS quantum dots to MDMO-PPV film, the performance was dramatically improved compared with pristine MDMO-PPV solar cells. The electronic structure of rutile TiO2 quantum dots (QDs) are investigated via the first-principles band structure method. We first propose a model to passivate the rutile TiO2 surfaces for the local density approximation calculations. In this model pseudohydrogen atoms are used to passivate the surface dangling bonds, which remove the localized in-cap surface states in the TiO2 QDs. As the size of the QD decreases, the band gap evolves as E-g(dot) = E-g(bulk) + 73.70/d(1.93), where E-g(dot) and d are the band gap and diameter of the QD, and E-g(bulk) is the band gap of the bulk rutile TiO2. The valence band maximum and the conduction band minimum states of the QDs are distributed mostly in the interior of the QDs, and they well inherit the atomic characteristics of those states of the bulk rutile TiO2.

We investigate theoretically the magnetic levels and optical properties of zigzag- and armchair-edged hexagonal graphene quantum dots (GQDs) utilizing the tight-binding method. A bound edge state at zero energy appears for the zigzag GQDs in the absence of a magnetic field. The magnetic levels of GQDs exhibit a Hofstadter-butterfly spectrum and approach the Landau levels of two-dimensional graphene as the magnetic field increases. The optical properties are tuned by the size, the type of the edge, and the external magnetic field.

We investigate theoretically the spin splitting of the exciton states in semiconductor coupled quantum dots (CQDs) containing a single magnetic ion. We find that the spin splitting can be switched on/off in the CQDs via the sp-d exchange interaction using the electric field. An interesting bright-to-dark exciton transition can be found and it significantly affects the photoluminescence spectrum. This phenomenon is induced by the transition of the ground exciton state, arising from the hole mixing effect, between the bonding and antibonding states. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

A comparative study of the steady-state and transient optical properties was made between InGaAs/GaAs quantum do chains (QDCs) and quantum dots (QDs). It was found that the photoluminescence (PL) decay time of QDCs exhibited a strong photon energy dependence, while it was less sensitive in QDs. The PL decay time increased much faster with the excitation power in the QDCs than that in QDs. When the excitation power was large enough, the PL decay time tended to be saturated. In addition, it was also found that the PL rise time was much shorter in QDCs than in QDs. All these experimental results show that there is a strong carrier coupling along the chain direction in the QD chain structure. The polarization PL measurements further confirm the carrier transfer process along the chain direction.

Doping difficulty in semiconductor nanocrystals has been observed and its origin is currently under debate. It is not clear whether this phenomenon is energetic or depends on the growth kinetics. Using first-principles method, we show that the transition energies and defect formation energies of the donor and acceptor defects always increase as the quantum dot sizes decrease. However, for isovalent impurities, the changes of the defect formation energies are rather small. The origin of the calculated trends is explained using simple band-energy-level models.

We report a photoluminescence (PL) energy red-shift of single quantum dots (QDs) by applying an in-plane compressive uniaxial stress along the [110] direction at a liquid nitrogen temperature. Uniaxial stress has an effect not only on the confinement potential in the growth direction which results in the PL shift, but also on the cylindrical symmetry of QDs which can be reflected by the change of the full width at half maximum of PL peak. This implies that uniaxial stress has an important role in tuning PL energy and fine structure splitting of QDs.

We investigate theoretically the electron-hole pair states in CdTe quantum dot (QD) containing a single Mn2+ ion by the magneto-optical spectrum tuned by the electric field. It is shown that the electric field does not only tune the spin splitting via the sp-d exchange interaction but also affect significantly the anticrossing behavior in the photoluminescence spectrum. This anticrossing is caused by the s-d exchange interaction and/or the hole mixing effect, which depends sensitively on the shape of the QD. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, how the dots' radius, At concentration and external electric field affect the single electron energy states in GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs spherical quantum dots are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the modification of the energy states is calculated when the difference in effective electron mass in GaAs and AlxGa1-xAs are considered. In addition, both the analytical method and the plane wave method are used in calculation and the results are compared, showing that they are in good agreement with each other. The results and methods can provide useful information for the future research and potential applications of quantum dots.

We grow In-GaAs quantum dot (QD) at low growth rate with 70 times insertion of growth interruption in MBE system. It is found that because of the extreme growth condition, QDs exhibit a thick wetting layer, large QD height value and special surface morphology which is attributed to the In segregation effect. Temperature dependence of photoluminescence measurement shows that this kind of QDs has a good thermal stability which is explained in terms of a "group coupling" model put forward by us. We present different relaxation mechanisms of Ge and SiGe quantum dots under excimer laser annealing. Investigation of the coarsening and relaxation of the dots shows that the strain in Ge dots on Ge films is relaxed by dislocation since there is no interface between the Ge dots and the Ge layer, while the SiGe dots on Si0.77Ge0.23 film relax by lattice distortion to coherent clots, which results from the obvious interface between the SiGe clots and the Si0.77Ge0.23 film. The results are suggested and sustained by Vanderbilt and Wickham's theory, and also demonstrate that no bulk diffusion oGeurs during the excimer laser annealing.
