It has been found that charge compensated CaMoO4:Eu3+ phosphors show greatly enhanced red emission under 393 and 467 nm-excitation, compared with CaMoO4:Eu3+ without charge compensation. Two approaches to charge compensation, (a) 2Ca(2+) -> EU3+ + M+, where M+ is a monovalent cation like Li+, Na+ and K+ acting as a charge compensator; (b) 3Ca(2+) -> 2EU(3+) + vacancy, are investigated. The influence of sintering temperature and Eu3+ concentration on the luminescent property of phosphor samples is also discussed.

The excitation and emission spectra of the BaLiF3:Ce3+ phosphors synthesized through solid state reaction have been measured. By investigating the properties of the excitation spectra we point out that the variation in the excitation spectra with the amount of CeF3 dopant results from the different patterns of charge compensation in the matrices. The vacancies of Li+ ions are the favorable charge compensation pattern at low concentration of CeF3 doped, but interstitial F- ions are the major charge compensation pattern when the concentration of CeF3 doped goes beyond a certain value. The spectrochemistry of Eu2+-doped perovskite KMgF3 was examined and discussed. Eu2+ can replace some of the K+ in the KMgF3 crystal, and simultaneously the corresponding cation hole can be compensated with the F- or O2- in the matrix. The emission intensity of Eu2+ due to the f --> f transition increased when Na+, Rb+ or F- was doped in KMgF3:Eu2+. Two mechanisms of charge compensation were proposed. No obvious valence change of Eu2+ occurred in KMgF3:Eu2+ after calcinating at high temperature, e.g. 900-degrees-C. It was found that the valence stability of Eu2+ improved after incorporation into the matrix.

Transparent polycrystalline MgO and TiO2 codoped Al2O3 ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid-state pressureless processing. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra of ( Mg, Ti : Al2O3 ceramics were measured. Owing to charge compensation of Mg2+, only UV absorption around 250nm was observed due to O2- -> Ti4+ charge transfer transitions (CT) when Ti content was low. As a result, the emission peaks of isolated Ti4+ ion located at 280-290nm and 410-420nm were observed. Besides absorption peak of V, ion, the characteristic absorption peak of V, ion centered at 490nm was observed in Mg, Ti) : Al2O3 ceramics when Ti content was high. The emission spectra of Ti3+, ion in polycrystalline Al2O3 ceramics coincide with that of Ti: Al2O3 single crystal.

Dynamics of formation of defects in the annealed nominally undoped semi-insulating InP obtained by high pressure, high temperature annealing of high purity materials is proposed. Incorporated hydrogen passivates vacancy at indium site from annihilation forming fully hydrogenated indium vacancy which dissociates leaving large lattice relaxation behind, deep donors, mainly larger complexes involving phosphorus at indium site and isolated hydrogen defects are created in nominally undoped InP after annealing. Also created are acceptor levels such as vacancy at indium site. Carrier charge compensation mechanism in nominally undoped InP upon annealing at high temperature is given. Microscopic models of hydrogen related defects are given. Structural, electronic and vibrational properties of LVMs related to hydrogen as well as their temperature effect are discussed.

Dynamical formation mechanism of defects in the annealed nominally undoped semi-insulating InP obtained by high pressure, high temperature annealing of high purity materials is proposed. Local vibrational modes in tenths of InP samples reveal clearly existence of complexes related to hydrogen. Complexes of vacancy at indium site with one to four hydrogen atoms and isolated hydrogen or hydrogen dimers, complexes of hydrogen with various impurities are investigated by FTIR. Hydrogen can acts as an actuator for generation of antistructure defects. Fully hydrogenated indium vacancy dissociates leaving large lattice relaxation behind, deep donors, mainly larger complexes involving phosphorus at indium site and isolated hydrogen defects are created in nominally undoped InP after annealing. Also created are acceptor levels such as vacancy at indium site. Carrier charge compensation mechanism in nominally undoped InP upon annealing at high temperature is given. Structures and physical properties of n=3 Ruddlesden-Popper compounds Ca4Mn3-xNbxO10 (0 <= x <= 0.2)
Resumo:
The Ruddlesden-Popper series of compounds Ca4Mn3-xNbxO10(x = 0-0.2) have been prepared by solid-state methods. Structural, magnetic, electrical, and magnetoresistive studies were performed on the compounds. Nb doping caused increases in both unit cell volume and octahedral distortion. The magnetization measurements indicated that the doped samples displayed ferromagnetism-like behavior, which could be explained by the double-exchange interaction between Mn4+ and Mn3+ induced by the charge-compensation effect.

A multinary molecular nanocluster, in which a T3 supertetrahedral [Sn4Ga4Zn2Se20](8-) core was neutralized and covalently terminated by four [(TEPA)Mn](2+) (TEPA = tetraethylenepentamine) metal complexes, was synthesized and characterized. The cluster is assembled into, through hydrogen bonding and van de Waals forces, a superlattice that is chemically stable and free of strong covalent coupling. The four different cations were distributed within the cluster in such a manner that both the local charge balance and global charge compensation by the metal complex could be satisfied.

A reduction phenomenon of Eu3+ -> Eu2+ was observed for the first time when Eu3+ ions were doped into an AlO4-tetrahedron-containing compound BaAl2O4 in an oxidizing atmosphere of air by high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and photoluminescent spectra are used to confirm the compound structure and detect the simultaneous existence of both divalent and trivalent europium ions, respectively. The abnormal Eu3+ -> Eu2+ reduction is explained by a charge compensation model. Spectroscopic properties of BaAl2O4:Eu are discussed and Eu2+ emission spectrum shows consistence with the results reported by Katsumata et a]. [J. Cryst. Growth 198/199 (1999) 869.] and Lin et al. [Mater. Chem. Phys. 70 (2001) 156.].

The reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ in air has been observed in a silicate matrix for the first time in BaMgSiO4:Eu prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. Emission and excitation spectra were employed to detect the presence of Eu2+ ions in the compound and this reduction was explained by a charge compensation model proposed previously. In BaMgSiO4 : Eu2+, Eu2+ ions occupy three different lattice sites by substitution for Ba2+ ions. Eu2+ ions on Ba(1) and Ba(2) sites gave emissions at about 500 nm while that on Ba(3) site showed an emission band at 398 nm. All the emissions of Eu2+ ions in BaMgSiO4 : Eu2+ were not quenched at room temperature.

Compounds of Sr4Al14O15: Eu were prepared in air atmosphere by high temperature solid state reaction. The reduction of Eu3+--> Eu2+ was firstly observed in the aluminate phosphor of Sr4Al14O25: Eu synthesized in air condition. This made aluminate a new family and Sr4Al14O25 a new member of compounds in which Eu3+ ion could be reduced to Eu2+ form when fired in air atmosphere. The reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in Sr4Al14O25: Eu was explained by means of a charge compensation model. Experiments based on the model were designed and carried out, and the results supported this model.

The polycrystals of KZnF3 : Eu have been synthesized by hydrothermal method at 220 degreesC, The product was characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM. The emission and excitation spectra of europium ion were measured. The existence of Eu2+ ion was confirmed by ESR and spectroscopy. The sites were possibly occupied by Eu2+ ions, charge compensation in this crystal were also discussed.

The reduction of RE3+ to RE2+ (RE=Eu, Sm and Tm) in SrB6O10 prepared in air by high-temperature solid state reaction was observed. The luminescent properties of Eu2+ and Tm2+ show f-d transition and Sm2+ shows f-f transition at room temperature. Three crystallographic sites for Sm2+ in matrix are available. Vibronic transition of D-5(0)-F-7(0) of Sm2+ was studied. The coupled phonon energy about 108 cm(-1), was determined: from the vibronic transition. Due to the thermal population from D-5(0) level, (D1-FJ)-D-5-F-7 (J=0, 1, 2) transitions of Sm2+ were observed at room temperature. A charge compensation mechanism is proposed as a possible explanation.

The reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ in SrB6O10 prepared in air by a high-temperature solid state reaction was studied. The luminescent properties of Eu2+ in this matrix show f-d broad band emission peaking at about 386 and 432 nm at room temperature. A charge compensation mechanism is proposed as a possible explanation. The luminescence of Eu3+ with f-f transitions was studied in this sample and reflected that the Eu3+ ion occupied a site with non-centro-symmetry. The ESR spectrum was used to detect the existence of Eu2+ in the samples. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
