Temperature fields of 355 nm high-reflectance (HR) coatings were investigated based on the interface absorption model. It was found that the highest temperature in the HR coatings increased with an increase in the extinction coefficient of the interface A, B, C, Al2O3 and MgF2. The highest temperature of HR coatings that can be reached increased quickly with the increase in the extinction coefficient of interface A in particular. The temperature rises of 355 nm HR coatings at different layers and different deposition temperatures were investigated based on experiments also. The damage mechanism of 355 nm HR coatings was confirmed with temperature fields and the interface absorption model.

Considering the interface absorption in optical coatings, we propose a model to simulate interface absorption. Calculations are made and the temperature field of several kinds of thin film multilayers, including those of partial reflectivity, high-reflectivity, and antireflectivity coatings are analyzed. The interface absorption is found to greatly influence the temperature distribution within multilayer coatings and to weaken the laser damage resistance of the samples. The real-time results of the photothermal deflection technique for laser induced damage to samples supports the model. (C) 1997 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

The curvature-stress relation is studied for a film-substrate bilayer with the effect of interfacial slip and compared with that of an ideal interface without interfacial slip. The interfacial slip together with the dimensions, elastic and interfacial properties of the film and substrate layers can cause a significant deviation of curvature-stress relation from that with an ideal interface. The interfacial slip also results in the so-called free edge effect that the stress, constraint force, and curvature vary dramatically around the free edges. The constant curvature as predicted by Stoney's formula and the Timoshenko model of an ideal interface is no longer valid for a bilayer with a nonideal interface. The models with the assumption of an ideal interface can also lead to an erroneous evaluation on the true stress state inside a bilayer with a nonideal interface. The extended Stoney's formula incorporating the effects of both the layer dimensions and interfacial slip is presented.

Semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) with GaAs/air interface relaxation region have less nonsaturable loss than those with low temperature grown In0.25Ga0.75As relaxation region. A thin layer Of SiO2 and a high reflectivity film Of Si/(SiO2/Si)(4) were coated on the SESAMs, respectively in order to improve the SESAM's threshold for damage. The passively continuous wave mode-locked lasers with two such SESAMs were demonstrated, and the SESAM with high reflectivity film of Si/(SiO2/Si)(4) is proved to be helpful for high output power. The "interaction effect" between aluminum foam and metal column that takes place when foam-filled hat sections (top-hats and double-hats) are axially crushed was investigated in this paper. Based on experimental examination, numerical simulation and analytical models, a systemic approach was developed to partition the energy absorption quantitatively into the foam filler component and the hat section component, and the relative contribution of each component to the overall interaction effect was therefore evaluated. Careful observation of the collapse profile found that the crushed foam filler could be further divided into two main energy-dissipation regions: densified region and extremely densified region. The volume reduction and volumetric strain of each region were empirically estimated. An analytical model pertinent to the collapse profile was thereafter proposed to find the more precise relationship between the volume reduction and volumetric strain of the foam filler. Combined the superfolding element model for hat sections with the current model according to the coupled method, each component energy absorption was subsequently derived, and the influence of some controlling factors was discussed. According to the finite element analysis and the theoretical modeling, when filled with foam, energy absorption was found to be increased both in the hat section and the foam filler, whereas the latter contributes predominantly to the interaction effect. The formation of the extremely densified region in the foam filler accounts for this effect.

Based on the scaling criteria of polymer flooding reservoir obtained in our previous work in which the gravity and capillary forces, compressibility, non-Newtonian behavior, absorption, dispersion, and diffusion are considered, eight partial similarity models are designed. A new numerical approach of sensitivity analysis is suggested to quantify the dominance degree of relaxed dimensionless parameters for partial similarity model. The sensitivity factor quantifying the dominance degree of relaxed dimensionless parameter is defined. By solving the dimensionless governing equations including all dimensionless parameters, the sensitivity factor of each relaxed dimensionless parameter is calculated for each partial similarity model; thus, the dominance degree of the relaxed one is quantitatively determined. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the effect coefficient of partial similarity model is defined as the summation of product of sensitivity factor of relaxed dimensionless parameter and its relative relaxation quantity. The effect coefficient is used as a criterion to evaluate each partial similarity model. Then the partial similarity model with the smallest effect coefficient can be singled out to approximate to the prototype. Results show that the precision of partial similarity model is not only determined by the number of satisfied dimensionless parameters but also the relative relaxation quantity of the relaxed ones.

Two types of peeling experiments are performed in the present research. One is for the Al film/Al2O3 substrate system with an adhesive layer between the film and the substrate. The other one is for the Cu film/Al2O3 substrate system without adhesive layer between the film and the substrate, and the Cu films are electroplated onto the Al2O3 substrates. For the case with adhesive layer, two kinds of adhesives are selected, which are all the mixtures of epoxy and polyimide with mass ratios 1:1.5 and 1:1, respectively. The relationships between energy release rate, the film thickness and the adhesive layer thickness are measured during the steady-state peeling process. The effects of the adhesive layer on the energy release rate are analyzed. Using the experimental results, several analytical criteria for the steady-state peeling based on the bending model and on the two-dimensional finite element analysis model are critically assessed. Through assessment of analytical models, we find that the cohesive zone criterion based on the beam bend model is suitable for a weak interface strength case and it describes a macroscale fracture process zone case, while the two-dimensional finite element model is effective to both the strong interface and weak interface, and it describes a small-scale fracture process zone case. In this paper, we studied the role of vertical component Of Surface tension of a water droplet on the deformation of membranes and microcantilevers (MCLs) widely used in lab-on-a-chip and micro-and nano-electromechanical system (MEMS/NEMS). Firstly, a membrane made of a rubber-like material, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), was considered. The deformation was investigated using the Mooney-Rivlin (MR) model and the linear elastic constitutive relation, respectively. By comparison between the numerical solutions with two different models, we found that the simple linear elastic model is accurate enough to describe such kind of problem, which would be quite convenient for engineering applications. Furthermore, based on small-deflection beam theory, the effect of a liquid droplet on the deflection of a MCL was also studied. The free-end deflection of the MCL was investigated by considering different cases like a cylindrical droplet, a spherical droplet centered on the MCL and a spherical droplet arbitrarily positioned on the MCL. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the deflection might not be neglected, and showed good agreement with our theoretical analyses. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An analytical fluid model for resonance absorption during the oblique incidence by femtosecond laser pulses on a small-scale-length density plasma [k(0)L is an element of(0.1,10)] is proposed. The physics of resonance absorption is analyzed more clearly as we separate the electric field into an electromagnetic part and an electrostatic part. It is found that the characteristics of the physical quantities (fractional absorption, optimum angle, etc.) in a small-scale-length plasma are quite different from the predictions of classical theory. Absorption processes are generally dependent on the density scale length. For shorter scale length or higher laser intensity, vacuum heating tends to be dominant. It is shown that the electrons being pulled out and then returned to the plasma at the interface layer by the wave field can lead to a phenomenon like wave breaking. This can lead to heating of the plasma at the expanse of the wave energy. It is found that the optimum angle is independent of the laser intensity while the absorption rate increases with the laser intensity, and the absorption rate can reach as high as 25%. From the effective absorption coefficient of bonded interface and the relationship of interface to reflectivity at cavity mode for double bonded vertical cavity laser, it can be seen that bonded interfaces should be positioned at the null of standing wave distribution, and the thickness of interface should be less than 20 nm. Using the finite elements method, the temperature contour map of laser can be calculated. Results showed that the influence of thin interface to thermal characteristics of VCSELS is slight, while thick interface will lead to temperature increase of active region. SEM images demonstrate that hydrophobic bonding is suitable for the fabrication of the device, while hydrophilic bonding interface is unfavorable to optical and thermal properties of devices with interface thickness larger than 40 nm.

A prominent effect of the interface potential (IP) [E. L. Ivchenko and A. Yu. Kaminski, Phys. Rev. B 54, 5852 (1996); O. Krebs and P. Voisin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1829 (1996)], the optical anisotropy of the forbidden transitions in quantum wells has been observed by reflectance-difference spectroscopy. Predictions by the heavy-light-hole coupling IP models are qualitatively consistent with all the observed features of the forbidden and the allowed transitions. The fact that the predicted value of the relative, transition strength, which depends on neither the IP strength nor the electric field, disagrees with the observed one indicates that coupling involving X and/or L bands may also be important. A new interface anisotropic potential, which is proportional to the lattice mismatch of interfaces and has no fitting parameter, has been deduced for (001) zinc-blende semiconductor interfaces. The comparison with other interface models is given for GaAs/AlAs and GaAs/InAs interfaces. The strong influence of the interface anisotropic potential on the inplane optical anisotropy of GaAs/AlGaAs low dimensional structures is demonstrated theoretically within the envelope function approximation.

We present studies of alloy composition and layer thickness dependences of excitonic linewidths in InGaAs/GaAs strained-layer quantum wells grown by MBE, using both photoluminescence and optical absorption. It is observed that linewidths of exciton spectra increase with indium content and well size. Using the virtual crystal approximation, the experimental data are analyzed. The results obtained show that the alloy disorder is the dominant mechanism for line broadening at low temperature. In addition, it is found that the absorption spectra related to light hole transitions have varied from a peak to a step-like structure as temperature increases. This behavior can be understood by the indirect space transitions of light holes.

We report on high magnetic fields (up to 40 T) cyclotron resonance, quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov-de-Hass measurements in high frequency transistors based on Si-doped GaN-AlGaN heterojunctions. A simple way of precise modelling of the cyclotron absorption in these heterojunctions is presented, We clearly establish two-dimensional electrons to be the dominant conducting carriers and determine precisely their in-plane effective mass to be 0.230 +/- 0.005 of the free electron effective mass. The increase of the effective mass with an increase of two-dimensional carrier density is observed and explained by the nonparabolicity effect. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Structural dependence on annealing of a-SiOx:H was studied by using infrared absorption and Raman scattering. The appearance of Raman peaks in the range of 513-519cm(-1) after 1170 degreesC annealing was interpreted as the formation nanocrystalline silicon with the sizes from 3-10nm. The Raman spectra also show the existence of amorphous-like silicon phase, which is associated with Si-Si bond re-construction at boundaries of silicon nanocrystallites. The presence of the shoulder at 980cm(-1) of Si-O-Si stretching vibration at 1085cm(-1) in infrared spectra imply that except that SiO2 phase, there is silicon sub-oxide phase in the films annealed at 1170 degreesC. This sub-oxide phase is located at the interface between Si crystallites and SiO2, and thus support the shell model for the mixed structures of Si grains and SiO2 matrix.
