Työn tavoitteena oli yhtenäisen toimintamallin luominen kohdeyrityksen materiaalitoiminnoille tuotannon kokoonpano-osastolla ja kokoonpanoa palvelevissa varastoissa. Toimintamallin tuli kattaa nimikkeiden siirrot ja siirtoihin liittyvät toimet toiminnanohjausjärjestelmässä. Lisäksi toimintamallin tuli vähentää saldovirheitä ja niistä johtuvia osapuutteita ja inventaarioepäselvyyksiä. Nykytilan kartoituksella yksilöitiin oleellisimmat kehityskohteet saldovirheiden eliminoimiseksi.

Työ on luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen tapauskohtainen konstruktiivinen tutkimus. Teoria osassa käsitellään toiminnan laadun kehittämistä, jossa keskitytään muun maussa jatkuvaan parantamiseen ja muutosjohtamiseen. Kirjallisuudessa korostetaan ennaltaehkäisevää toimintaa, jolla pyritään välttämään virhekustannuksia ja ajan tuhlausta. Työn empiirisessä osassa on haastateltu niitä henkilöitä, jotka työskentelevät laadun parissa yrityksessä. Haastatteluiden tarkoitus on saada tietoa laatumoduulista ja siihen liittyvistä prosesseista. Yhteenvedossa päädyttiin muun muassa seuraaviin johtopäätöksiin että, osa laatumoduulin osioista soveltuu projektityöskentelyyn. Laatumoduulin osiot voivat tehostaa tiedonkulkua ja prosessien toimivuutta. Parhaimmillaan laatumoduulin avulla on mahdollista välttää ennaltaehkäisevästi virhekustannuksia.

The aim of this master’s thesis was to map the management accounting processes and reporting of an internal service unit. The research was conducted in energy services in a forest industry company. Research questions and the results of the study are highly specific for the case unit although some generalizable features of management accounting in internal service units under shared services were searched. The research was carried out as a qualitative action research and a single case study. Internal benchmarking was used to find best practices from other units and to get a comprehensive understanding of the financial processes of the case company. Empirical data for the study was collected with participant observation, interviews of experts and by exploring internal company documents. A literature review was conducted to outline the subject and to support the study. Although the management accounting processes of the case unit were found to be on a good level, some improvement ideas were presented. Results of the research show that the needs of the customers are in the key role in the processes of an internal service unit. Management accounting and reporting need to support the company strategy and management decision-making. To evaluate the performance of the service unit both financial and non-financial measures are needed.

Quality measurement and benchmarking in aged cave presents several challenges. A model which addresses this by linking four dimensions of outcomes has been developed - the Clinical Value Compass (CVC). A CVC was developed for stroke rehabilitation and measured across four sites. The CVC teas well accepted by the treatment teams and proved practical to measure. The results revealed differences in practices and client groups that led to a closer analysis of process and subsequent changes in these processes. Remeasuring of the CVC is required to demonstrate improved outcomes arising from these process changes.

This report provides a benchmark of progress in regional planning for natural resource management in Queensland and the tropical savannas region of northern Australia during 2004. It is based on a review of regional plans and planning processes against a set of pre-defined criteria designed specifically to evaluate regional planning arrangements.

We are witnessing an enormous growth in biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. It presents specific challenges beyond traditional COD (carbon) removal. A possibility for optimised process design is the use of biomass-supporting media. In this paper, attached growth processes (AGP) are evaluated using dynamic simulations. The advantages of these systems that were qualitatively described elsewhere, are validated quantitatively based on a simulation benchmark for activated sludge treatment systems. This simulation benchmark is extended with a biofilm model that allows for fast and accurate simulation of the conversion of different substrates in a biofilm. The economic feasibility of this system is evaluated using the data generated with the benchmark simulations. Capital savings due to volume reduction and reduced sludge production are weighed out against increased aeration costs. In this evaluation, effluent quality is integrated as well.

Benchmarking is an important tool to organisations to improve their productivity, product quality, process efficiency or services. From Benchmarking the organisations could compare their performance with competitors and identify their strengths and weaknesses. This study intends to do a benchmarking analysis on the main Iberian Sea ports with a special focus on their container terminals efficiency. To attain this, the DEA (data envelopment analysis) is used since it is considered by several researchers as the most effective method to quantify a set of key performance indicators. In order to reach a more reliable diagnosis tool the DEA is used together with the data mining in comparing the sea ports operational data of container terminals during 2007.Taking into account that sea ports are global logistics networks the performance evaluation is essential to an effective decision making in order to improve their efficiency and, therefore, their competitiveness.

Link quality estimation is a fundamental building block for the design of several different mechanisms and protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSN). A thorough experimental evaluation of link quality estimators (LQEs) is thus mandatory. Several WSN experimental testbeds have been designed ([1–4]) but only [3] and [2] targeted link quality measurements. However, these were exploited for analyzing low-power links characteristics rather than the performance of LQEs. Despite its importance, the experimental performance evaluation of LQEs remains an open problem, mainly due to the difficulty to provide a quantitative evaluation of their accuracy. This motivated us to build a benchmarking testbed for LQE - RadiaLE, which we present here as a demo. It includes (i.) hardware components that represent the WSN under test and (ii.) a software tool for the set up and control of the experiments and also for analyzing the collected data, allowing for LQEs evaluation.
