Shadow policing: the boundaries of community-based ‘policing’ in Northern Ireland

The intention of this article is to provide a structural and operational analysis of policing beyond the police in Northern Ireland. While the polity enjoys low levels of ‘officially’ recorded crime as part of its post-conflict status, little empirical analysis exists as to the epistemological roots of security production outside that of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The empirical evidence presented seeks to establish that beyond more prominent analyses related to paramilitary ‘policing’, the country is in fact replete with a substantial reservoir of legitimate civil society policing – the collective mass of which contributes to policing, community safety and quality of life issues. While such non-state policing at the level of locale was recognised by the Independent Commission for Policing, structured understandings have rarely permeated governmental or academic discourse beyond anecdotal contentions. Thus, the present argument provides an empirical assessment of the complex, non-state policing landscape beyond the formal state apparatus; examines definitions and structures of such community-based policing activities; and explores issues related to co-opting this non-state security ‘otherness’ into more formal relations with the state.

Co-occurrence of three types of egg policing in the Norwegian wasp Dolichovespula norwegica

In insect societies, workers often try to challenge the reproductive monopoly of the queen by laying their own eggs. Successful worker reproduction, however, is frequently prevented by queen policing or worker policing, whereby either the mother queen or non-reproductive workers selectively kill worker-laid eggs. Recently, a third mechanism-""selfish"" worker policing-has also been described in which the workers selectively police worker-laid eggs but also lay eggs themselves. Here, we present results from the monogynous wasp Dolichovespula norwegica, which show that all three kinds of policing-queen policing, worker policing and ""selfish"" worker policing-co-occur. The net effect of these three kinds of policing collectively favoured the queen`s reproduction, as within 1 day 44% of the worker-laid eggs versus only 8% of the queen-laid eggs were eaten. Of the worker-laid eggs that were killed by workers, approximately two thirds were eaten by the reproductive workers even though these made up only a small proportion, 8%, of the work force. This means that policing workers obtained both direct fitness benefits as well as indirect (inclusive) fitness. In addition, we show that worker policing was carried out by a limited, specialised set of workers that was estimated to constitute approximately one quarter of the whole colony and of which 66% were non-reproductive.

Culturas adeptas do futebol. O espaço plural da condição adepta: práticas e identidades

No domínio da figura paradigmática do mundo do futebol do adepto – convenção que ela mesma importará problematizar –, muitas questões, problemas e articulações podem ser equacionadas. Desde logo salientar-se-á que nas suas urdiduras mais ferrenhas e investidas a condição de adepto também se constituirá em torno de sonhos, fantasias pessoais (mas com recorte intersubjectivo) cuja concretização não escapa a contingências circunstanciais (uma bola no poste, lesão inesperada de um jogador influente, erros de arbitragem, etc.). Uma convulsão de expectativas entra em jogo quanto a feitos do clube dilecto, resultados, vitórias, intimidade com ‘estrelas’ do jogo, etc. Sonhos que, por seu turno, assumirão formas próximas de sonhos acordados, tanto antecipatórios (por exemplo, imaginando o que poderão ser os lances capitais do próximo jogo ou a carreira numa certa competição, o rendimento e mais-valia de uma falada aquisição) como retrospectivos (por hipótese, ficcionando, talvez até remoendo, o que, num dado jogo passado, teria acontecido se o jogador x não tivesse falhado aquela oportunidade clara de golo, ou o guarda-redes não tivesse sofrido aquele frango). Como em relação aos protagonistas do jogo, os jogadores, que recorrentemente são descritos como a melhor coisa do futebol, também a análise dos típicos sonhos de adepto não dispensa situá-los perante a estrutura do campo do futebol português. Pelo menos em parte, os objecto e conteúdo e a padronização de tais sonhos será função do tecido de interdependências que aí se concentra. Quanto a este ponto, há que prestar especial atenção à crescente penetração do capital económico (ou da lógica de rendibilidade financeira de larga escala) quer directamente na esfera do futebol quer, paralelamente, na esfera da comunicação social desportiva, tornando ambas no essencial áreas de negócio como outras quaisquer. Entre outros impactes colaterais, esta industrialização ou mercadorização do futebol produzirá efeitos diversos, e inclusive na aparência contraditórios, sobre os próprios adeptos e as suas identidades (Giullianoti, 2002). Basta ver que, ao mesmo que tempo que induz a legitimação do adepto – tornado ele próprio protagonista do espectáculo – reduz-lhe o poder de intervir na vida do clube, dado que este poder tende a transitar (não sem resistências) da esfera associativa para a empresarial, logo dos associados para os accionistas. No caso português, acresce que a mercadorização do futebol, além de modificar e fragmentar a relação dos adeptos com o futebol (Kumar, 2004), logo as expectativas, ficções e devaneios, que nela convergem, acentuará a hipertrofia da simpatia clubista em Portugal (manifestamente concentrada em três clubes apenas), comprimindo desse jeito o espectro de clubes objectivamente capazes de insuflar nos indivíduos aquilo que, aqui, provisoriamente designaremos de crença clubista.

Evaluación del uso “extra-label” de fluorquinolonas en llamas desde un enfoque plural: bienestar animal versus salud pública y ecotoxicología

La explotación comercial de la llama facilita la aparición de patologías bacterianas y parasitarias que producen importantes pérdidas económicas. Su prevención y el tratamiento exigen establecer regímenes terapéuticos eficaces y seguros que eviten la aparición de resistencias. La ausencia de especialidades farmacéuticas propias para esta especie y la falta de información científica sobre el comportamiento de los fármacos de uso habitual en llamas, obligan al veterinario a establecer pautas terapéuticas “fuera de prospecto”, a partir de su experiencia en otras especies. Esto conlleva el riesgo de alcanzar o bien niveles tóxicos o bien sub-terapéuticos, estos últimos facilitan la aparición de resistencias bacterianas transmisibles a otras poblaciones. Pretendemos describir el comportamiento cinético de dos antimicrobianos de amplio espectro y uso exclusivo en veterinaria (enrofloxacina y marbofloxacina). Los datos obtenidos nos permitirán evaluar la seguridad y eficacia de diferentes regímenes terapéuticos que puedan dar respuesta a las necesidades clínicas en esta especie. El proyecto que abordamos se encuentra en una línea de aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales dentro de un espíritu de compromiso social, desarrollo sostenible, bienestar animal y salud pública.

Worker policing in the german wasp Vespula germanica

In some ants, bees, and wasps, workers kill or "police" male eggs laid by other workers in order to maintain the reproductive primacy of the queen. Kin selection theory predicts that multiple mating by the queen is one factor that can selectively favor worker policing. This is because when the queen is mated to multiple males, workers are more closely related to the queen's sons than to the sons of other workers. Earlier work has suggested that reproductive patterns in the German wasp Vespula germanica may contradict this theory, because in some colonies a large fraction of the adult males were inferred to be the workers' sons, despite the effective queen mating frequency being greater than 2 (2.4). In the present study, we reexamine the V. germanica case and show that it does support the theory. First, genetic analysis confirms that the effective queen mating frequency is high, 2.9, resulting in workers being more related to the queen's sons than to other workers' sons. Second, behavioral assays show that worker-laid eggs are effectively killed by other workers, despite worker-laid eggs having the same intrinsic viability as queen-laid ones. Finally, we estimate that approximately 58.4% of the male eggs but only 0.44% of the adult males are worker derived in queenright colonies, consistent with worker reproduction being effectively policed.

Nominal plural marking of nonce words in child Spanish

This study addresses the issue of Spanish plural marking considering data from three sources: existent words, loan words and nonce words. Specifically, we are interested in the role of stress placement and word-final sound in the use of /-es/ for plural formation. We present data concerning the interaction of these two features for children and adults. Our findings suggest that this phenomenon is a classic example of over generalization in acquisition. Stress does not seem a determining feature by itself. Its main effect is produced when it interacts with the structure of the syllable
