Magneto-transport measurements have been carried out on a Si heavily delta-doped In0.52Al0.48As/In(0.53)G(0.47)As single quantum well in the temperature range between 1.5 and 60 K under magnetic field up to 10 T. We studied the Shubnikov-de Haas(SdH) effect and the Hall effect for the In0.52Al0.48As/In(0.53)G(0.47)As single quantum well occupied by two subbands, and have obtained the electron concentration, mobility, effective mass and energy levels respectively. The electron concentrations of the two subbands derived from mobility spectrum combined with multi-carrier fitting analysis are well consistent with the result from the SdH oscillation. From fast Fourier transform analysis for d(2)rho/dB(2)-1/B, it is observed that there is a frequency of f(1)-f(2) insensitive to the temperature, besides the frequencies f(1), f(2) for the two subbands and the frequency doubling 2f(1), both dependent on the temperature. This is because That the electrons occupying the two different subbands almost have the same effective mass in the quantum well and the magneto-intersubband scattering between the two subbands is strong.

We present magnetotransport studies of high-density triple quantum well samples with different barrier widths. Because of electron transitions between three occupied 2D subbands, the magneto-resistance shows magneto-intersubband oscillations whose periodicity is determined by the subband separation energies. Temperature-dependent measurements allow us to extract quantum lifetime of electrons. A theoretical consideration of the observed phenomenon is also presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Shubmkov-de Haas (SdH) measurements are performed over a temperature range of 1.5-20K in AL(0.22)Ga(0.78)N/GaN heterostructures with two subbands occupied. In addition to an intermodulation between two sets of SdH oscillations from the first and second subbands, a beating in oscillatory magnetoresistance at 12K is observed, due to the mixing of the first subband SdH oscillations and 'magnetointersubband' (MIS) oscillations. A phase shift of pi between the SdH and MIS oscillations is also clearly identified. Our experimental results, i.e. that the SdH oscillations dominate at low temperature and MIS oscillations dominate at high temperature, fully comply with the expected behaviour of MIS oscillations.

Magneto-transport measurements have been carried out on double/single-barrier-doped In0.52Al0.48As/In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As quantum well samples from 1.5 to 60 K in an applied magnetic field up to 13 T. Beating Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation is observed for the symmetrically double-barrier-doped sample and demonstrated due to a symmetric state and an antisymmetric state confined in two coupled self-consistent potential wells in the single quantum well. The energy separation between the symmetric and the antisymmetric states for the double-barrier-doped sample is extracted from experimental data, which is consistent with calculation. For the single-barrier-doped sample, only beating related to magneto-intersubband scattering shows up. The pesudospin property of the symmetrically double-barrier-doped single quantum well shows that it is a good candidate for fabricating quantum transistors. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The interference of magneto-intersubband oscillations and microwave-induced resistance oscillations is studied in high-density triple quantum wells. We give an introduction into magnetotransport in trilayer systems and focus on photoresistance measurements. The power and frequency dependence of the observed magnetoresistance oscillations can be described by the inelastic mechanism of photoresistance, generalized to the three-subband case. The interference of microwave-induced resistance oscillations and magneto-intersubband oscillations in double quantum wells exposed to a continuous microwave irradiation is under study. By comparing experimental and theoretical magnetoresistance traces at different temperatures, we confirm that the inelastic mechanism of photoresistance explains our observations up to T similar or equal to 4 K. For higher temperatures, our results suggest a deviation of the inelastic scattering time tau(in) from the predicted T(-2) dependence. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report in detail oscillatory magnetoresistance in double quantum wells under microwave irradiation. The experimental investigation contains measurements of frequency, power and temperature dependence. In theory, the observed interference oscillations are explained in terms of the influence of subband coupling on the frequency-dependent photoinduced part of the electron distribution function. Thus, the magnetoresistance shows the interference of magneto-intersubband and conventional microwave induced resistance oscillations.

Magneto-rheological (MR) fluid damper is a semi-active control device that has recently received more attention by the vibration control community. But inherent nonlinear hysteresis character of magneto-rheological fluid dampers is one of the challenging aspects for utilizing this device to achieve high system performance. So the development of accurate model is necessary to take the advantage their unique characteristics. Research by others [3] has shown that a system of nonlinear differential equations can successfully be used to describe the hysteresis behavior of the MR damper. The focus of this paper is to develop an alternative method for modeling a damper in the form of centre average fuzzy interference system, where back propagation learning rules are used to adjust the weight of network. The inputs for the model are used from the experimental data. The resulting fuzzy interference system is satisfactorily represents the behavior of the MR fluid damper with reduced computational requirements. Use of the neuro-fuzzy model increases the feasibility of real time simulation.

A magneto-rheological (MR) fluid damper is a semi-active control device that has recently begun to receive more attention in the vibration control community. However, the inherent nonlinear nature of the MR fluid damper makes it challenging to use this device to achieve high damping control system performance. Therefore the development of an accurate modeling method for a MR fluid damper is necessary to take advantage of its unique characteristics. Our goal was to develop an alternative method for modeling a MR fluid damper by using a self tuning fuzzy (STF) method based on neural technique. The behavior of the researched damper is directly estimated through a fuzzy mapping system. In order to improve the accuracy of the STF model, a back propagation and a gradient descent method are used to train online the fuzzy parameters to minimize the model error function. A series of simulations had been done to validate the effectiveness of the suggested modeling method when compared with the data measured from experiments on a test rig with a researched MR fluid damper. Finally, modeling results show that the proposed STF interference system trained online by using neural technique could describe well the behavior of the MR fluid damper without need of calculation time for generating the model parameters.

In this study, magnetohydrodynamic natural convection boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting and viscous incompressible fluid along a heated vertical flat plate with uniform heat and mass flux in the presence of strong cross magnetic field has been investigated. For smooth integrations the boundary layer equations are transformed in to a convenient dimensionless form by using stream function formulation as well as the free variable formulation. The nonsimilar parabolic partial differential equations are integrated numerically for Pr ≪1 that is appropriate for liquid metals against the local Hartmann parameter ξ . Further, asymptotic solutions are obtained near the leading edge using regular perturbation method for smaller values of ξ . Solutions for values of ξ ≫ 1 are also obtained by employing the matched asymptotic technique. The results obtained for small, large and all ξ regimes are examined in terms of shear stress, τw, rate of heat transfer, qw, and rate of mass transfer, mw, for important physical parameter. Attention has been given to the influence of Schmidt number, Sc, buoyancy ratio parameter, N and local Hartmann parameter, ξ on velocity, temperature and concentration distributions and noted that velocity and temperature of the fluid achieve their asymptotic profiles for Sc ≥ 10:0.

D.C. electrical conductivity of polyaniline (33%,40%) blended with PMMA was measured from 5K to 300mK. The conductivity behaviour is consistent with fluctuation induced tunneling. Magneto-resistance (MR) was measured between 300K and 2K. From 20K to 2K, a large positive MR was observed. At 2K, for low magnetic fields (<1 Tesla), a deviation from the normal H-2 behaviour was observed.

We report three prominent observations made on the nanoscale charge ordered ( CO) manganites RE(1-x)AE(x)MnO(3) (RE = Nd, Pr; AE = Ca; x = 0.5) probed by temperature dependent magnetization and magneto-transport, coupled with electron magnetic/paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EMR/EPR). First, evidence is presented to show that the predominant ground state magnetic phase in nanoscale CO manganites is ferromagnetic and it coexists with a residual anti-ferromagnetic phase. Secondly, the shallow minimum in the temperature dependence of the EPR linewidth shows the presence of a charge ordered phase in nanoscale manganites which was shown to be absent from the DC static magnetization and transport measurements. Thirdly, the EPR linewidth, reflective of spin dynamics, increases significantly with a decrease of particle size in CO manganites. We discuss the interesting observations made on various samples of different particle sizes and give possible explanations. We have shown that EMR spectroscopy is a highly useful technique to probe the 'hindered charge ordered phase' in nanoscale CO manganites, which is not possible by static DC magnetization and transport measurements.

Temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction, magnetization and XPS studies were carried out on an optimally Cr-doped CaRuO3, i.e. CaRu0.85Cr0.15O3 (CRC-15). XPS data revealed that Cr exist in 3+ and 6+ oxidation states. The charge dissociation preserves the overall 4+ nominal charge of the Ru site. Although ferromagnetic correlations develop around 100 K, the system exhibits a large coercive field below 50 K. The unit cell volume exhibits negative thermal expansion below 50 K since the lattice expansion due to the magnetostrictive effect outweighs the thermal contraction due to the phonon-driven mechanism.

Under certain specific assumption it has been observed that the basic equations of magneto-elasticity in the case of plane deformation lead to a biharmonic equation, as in the case of the classical plane theory of elasticity. The method of solving boundary value problems has been properly modified and a unified approach in solving such problems has been suggested with special reference to problems relating thin infinite plates with a hole. Closed form expressions have been obtained for the stresses due to a uniform magnetic field present in the plane of deformation of a thin infinite conducting plate with a circular hole, the plate being deformed by a tension acting parallel to the direction of the magnetic field.

The title-problem has been reduced to that of solving a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. One end of the cylinder is assumed to be fixed, while the cylinder is deformed by an axial current. The vertical displacement on the upper flat end of the cylinder has been determined from an iterative solution of the Fredholm equation valid for large values of the length. The radial displacement of the curved boundary has also been determined at the middle of the cylinder, by using the iterative solution.
