Im Jahre 2002 wurde mit dem NA48/1-Detektor eine Datennahme mit hoher Intensität von K_S-Mesonen und neutralen Hyperonen durchgeführt, bei der unter anderem etwa 10^9 Xi^0-Zerfallskandidaten aufgezeichnet wurden. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden aus diesem Datensatz 6657 Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e^- Anti-nü und 581 Anti-Xi^0 -> Anti-Sigma^+ e^+ nü-Ereignisse ausgewählt und damit die Verzweigungsverhältnisse BR1(Gamma(Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ e^- Anti-nü)/Gamma(Xi^0 total))=( 2.533 +-0.032(stat) -0.076+0.089(syst) )10^-4 und BR2(Gamma(Anti-Xi^0 -> Anti-Sigma^+ e^+ nü)/Gamma(Anti-Xi^0 total))= ( 2.57 +-0.12(stat) -0.09+0.10(syst) )10^-4 bestimmt. Dieses Ergebnis für BR1 ist etwa 3.5-mal genauer als die bisher veröffentlichte Messung. Die Analyse der Anti-Xi^0-Beta-Zerfälle stellt die erste Messung von BR2 dar. Beide Ergebnisse stimmen mit der theoretischen Vorhersage von 2.6*10^-4 überein. Aus dem Xi^0-Beta-Verzweigungsverhältnis folgt unter Verwendung des experimentellen Wertes des Formfaktorverhältnisses g1/f1 für das CKM-Matrixelement |Vus| = 0.209 +- 0.004(exp) +- 0.026(syst), wobei die dominierende Unsicherheit von g1/f1 herrührt. Außerdem wurden in dieser Arbeit 99 Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ mu^- Anti-nü Zerfallskandidaten mit einem abgeschätzten Untergrund von 30 Ereignissen rekonstruiert und daraus ebenfalls das Verzweigungsverhältnis extrahiert: BR3(Gamma(Xi^0 -> Sigma^+ mu^- Anti-nü)/Gamma(Xi^0 total)) = ( 2.11 +- 0.31(stat) +- 0.15(syst) )10^-6.

Silicon on Insulator (SOI) substrates offer a promising platform for monolithic high energy physics detectors with integrated read-out electronics and pixel diodes. This paper describes the fabrication and characterisation of specially-configured SOI substrates using improved bonded wafer ion split and grind/polish technologies. The crucial interface between the high resistivity handle silicon and the SOI buried oxide has been characterised using both pixel diodes and circular geometry MOS transistors. Pixel diode breakdown voltages were typically greater than 100V and average leakage current densities at 70 V were only 55 nA/ sq cm. MOS transistors subjected to 24 GeV proton irradiation showed an increased SOI buried oxide trapped charge of only 3.45x1011cn-2 for a dose of 2.7Mrad

The DO experiment at Fermilab's Tevatron will record several petabytes of data over the next five years in pursuing the goals of understanding nature and searching for the origin of mass. Computing resources required to analyze these data far exceed capabilities of any one institution. Moreover, the widely scattered geographical distribution of DO collaborators poses further serious difficulties for optimal use of human and computing resources. These difficulties will exacerbate in future high energy physics experiments, like the LHC. The computing grid has long been recognized as a solution to these problems. This technology is being made a more immediate reality to end users in DO by developing a grid in the DO Southern Analysis Region (DOSAR), DOSAR-Grid, using a available resources within it and a home-grown local task manager, McFarm. We will present the architecture in which the DOSAR-Grid is implemented, the use of technology and the functionality of the grid, and the experience from operating the grid in simulation, reprocessing and data analyses for a currently running HEP experiment.

A high energy ep collider, such as the proposed LHeC, possesses the unique facility of permitting direct measurement of the HWW coupling without contamination from the HZZ coupling. At such a machine, the fusion of two W bosons through the HWW vertex would give rise to typical charged current events accompanied by a Higgs boson. We demonstrate that azimuthal angle correlations between the observable charged current final states could then be a sensitive probe of the nature of the HWW vertex and hence of the CP properties of the Higgs boson. The present study suggests the use of high energy ball milling to mix (to dope) the phase MgB2 with the AlB2 crystalline structure compound, ZrB2, with the same C32 hexagonal structure than MgB 2, in different concentrations, enabling the maintenance of the crystalline phase structures practically unaffected and the efficient mixture with the dopant. The high energy ball milling was performed with different ball-to-powder ratios. The analysis of the transformation and formation of phases was accomplished by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), using the Rietveld method, and scanning electron microscopy. As the high energy ball milling reduced the crystallinity of the milled compounds, also reducing the size of the particles, the XRD analysis were influenced, and they could be used as comparative and control method of the milling. Aiming the recovery of crystallinity, homogenization and final phase formation, heat treatments were performed, enabling that crystalline phases, changed during milling, could be obtained again in the final product. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

In this paper we apply to the photoproduction total cross section a model we have proposed for purely hadronic processes and which is based on QCD mini-jets and soft gluon re-summation. We compare the predictions of our model with the HERA data as well as with other models. For cosmic rays, our model predicts substantially higher cross sections at TeV energies than models based on factorization, but lower than models based on mini-jets alone, without soft gluons. We discuss the origin of this difference.

We apply to total cross-sections our model for soft gluon resummation in the infrared region. The model aims to probe large distance interactions in QCD. Our ansatz for an effective coupling for gluons and quarks in the infrared region follows an inverse power law which is singular but integrable. In the context of an eikonal formalism with QCD mini-jets, we study total hadronic cross-sections for protons, pions, photons. We estimate the total inelastic cross-section at LHC comparing with recent measurements and update previous results for survival probability.
