Empower me : social innovation design for homeless families : collective design creativity

Design Creativity has largely been explored as an individual expression of design cognition rather than as the collective manifestation of interaction in context. Recent approaches to design with an emphasis on co-design suggest that the problem-solution space co-evolves through social interaction. Socially Responsive Design for Social Innovation constitutes the most recent and perhaps the most promising domain of application for design thinking practices that emphasize collaborative innovation. In this paper, we describe the ideation of a service design solution for homeless families (Em.power.me), developed through consultation with a range of stakeholders over a three month period. This service design innovation aimed to visualise how such a service would operate and identify the potential benefits for all stakeholders. We focus here on the phases leading to the ideation of the service design.

Governing virtual worlds : to what extent is it possible to empower players and preserve their rights in virtual worlds, and what is the best method of doing so?

In this paper the author considers the possibilities for establishing democratic governance in virtual worlds. He looks at the freedoms currently available to players in “Second Life”, contrasting these to those established in Raph Koster’s “A Declaration of the Rights of Avatars”, and assess whether some restrictions are more necessary in game spaces than social spaces. The author looks at the early implementations of self-governance in online spaces, and consider what lessons can be taken from these, investigating what a contemporary democratic space looks like, in the form of “A Tale in the Desert”, and finally considers how else we may think of giving players more rights in these developing social spaces.

Why we must empower people to conserve Biodiversity

Conserving blodiversity has in recent years become a concern of the global elite because of the commercial potential of the emerging biotechnologies. But much of this blodiversity resides In the Third World tropics which are currently being drained of their biological and mineral wealth. This process goes on because the costs of the resultant degradation are entirely passed on to the poor of the Third World countryside who perforce have to depend on resources gathered or produced with their own labour from their surroundings. The elite have always found a substitute whenever a particular resource, or a particular locality, has been exploited to exhaustion. Indeed, given their record, commercial interests are likely to abandon the new found concern for conservation once they acquire control over adequate levels of genetic resources in ex situ storages. Long term conservation of biodiversity must therefore be attempted through empowering and suitably rewarding people of the Third World countryside whose well being is linked to the sustainable use of biological resources and conservation of the biodiversity in their own localities.

Segundo Palliative Care in European, a dor oncológica, tem uma importância especial porque o cancro é a segunda causa de morte em Portugal e por existir dor moderada a intensa em mais de 90% dos doentes em situação oncológica terminal. O desenvolvimento de um programa estruturado de intervenção de enfermagem que vá de encontro às necessidades do doente oncológico com doença avançada e/ou cuidador, relativamente à gestão da dor, poderá ter um impacto muito significativo no controlo da dor e de outros sintomas. OBJETIVOS Avaliar o efeito de um programa de Intervenção de Enfermagem na capacidade de gestão da dor por parte do doente oncológico com doença avançada e/ou o cuidador em domicílio. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS A implementação do programa tem a duração prevista para 6 semanas. Compreende duas sessões educativas, três telefonemas e uma sessão de avaliação final. O programa foi elaborado, após uma Revisão sistemática de Literatura, com base no programa “ THE PRO-SELF”, nas Orientações Genéricas preconizadas pelo Plano Nacional de Luta Contra a dor e na Intervenção de enfermagem “Controle da Dor” da Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC). RESULTADOS O projeto encontra-se na fase de implementação e avaliação do programa educativo. No início os doentes não apresentam informação relativamente à gestão da dor, no final demonstram capacidade para a monitorização da dor e de outros sintomas e para a gestão da terapêutica, realizando os registos num diário de bordo. A literacia, a situação clínica e a disponibilidade interferem na capacidade de gestão. A proximidade da morte e a alteração do estado de consciência interferem na autonomia e na tomada de decisão. Abstract (3000 characters with spaces) INTRODUCTION One of the most frequent symptoms in oncological patient with advanced disease is pain. According to Palliative Care in European, oncological pain, has a special importance because the cancer is the second most common cause of death in Portugal and there is moderate to severe pain in more than 90 % of patients in oncological terminal situation. The development of a structured program of nursing intervention that will meet the needs of the oncological patient with advanced disease and/or caregiver at home on pain management, will be able to provide for the management of pain, increasing knowledge for the control of pain while minimizing the associated symptoms that influence the quality of life of the patient and the caregiver's anxiety. PURPOSE/GOAL/AIM To evaluate the effect of an educational program of Nursing Intervention on pain management by the oncological patient with advanced disease and/or caregiver. RESEARCH/PROBLEM What is the effect of a structured program of nursing intervention directed to the patient and/or oncological patient caregiver with advanced disease at home, in the management of pain? METHODOLOGY Almost experimental study, with assessment of the management capacity of the oncological patient pain with advanced disease at home and/or informal caregiver, before and after the intervention of nursing (educational program) and transverse evaluation throughout the study. Population: oncological patients with advanced disease at home, with more than 18 years, and or family caregiver, attending an Oncology Unit – Hospital during the day. RESULTS Made an application in an Oncology service in oncological patients with advanced disease at home, it was found that at the beginning the patients did not present information regarding pain management, at the end demonstrated capacity for monitoring of pain and other symptoms and therapeutic management, performing a logbook records. Can the state empower communities through localism? An evaluation of recent approaches to neighbourhood governance in England

‘Empowerment’ is a term much used by policy-makers with an interest in improving service delivery and promoting different forms of neighbourhood governance. But the term is ambiguous and has no generally accepted definition. Indeed, there is a growing paradox between the rhetoric of community empowerment and an apparent shift towards increased centralisation of power away from the neighbourhood in developed economies. This article explores the literature relating to empowerment and identifies two broad conceptions which reflect different emphases on neo-liberalism. It goes on to discuss two models illustrating different levels of state intervention at the neighbourhood level and sets out evidence from two neighbourhood councils in Milton Keynes in central England. In conclusion, it is argued that those initiatives which are top-down, state-led policy initiatives tend to result in the least empowerment (as defined by government), whereas the bottom-up, self-help projects, which may be partly state-enabled, at least provide an opportunity to create the spaces where there is some potential for varying degrees of transformation. Further empirical research is needed to test how far localist responses can challenge constraints on empowerment imposed by neo-liberalism.

The development, assessment, and implementation of an evaluation of the EMPOWER Program at shelters for abused women /

The development, assessment, and implementation of a program evaluation instrument was carried out to evaluate the impact and efficacy of the EMPOWER Program. This intervention was created to educate residents at a shelter for abused women with an anticipated outcome of prevention. Participants included the staff and residents at 2 shelters in Southern Ontario. Client pre, post and follow-up measures were obtained and analyzed statistically and using keyword content analysis. A single staff measure was obtained and summarized using keyword content analysis. Qualitative results were suggestive of important change in participants. All women in the post and follow-up measures believed their participation in the EMPOWER Program provided them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to avoid abusive relationships in the fliture. This transformational impact was repeatedly expressed in both resident and staff feedback. Limitations of this research, as well as suggestions for future study were discussed.
